One writer has it right as to what JJ should do:

???cut Miles Austin on June 1 to save $5.5 million.
???Sean Lee and Orlando Scandrick just signed new deals in 2013. By restructuring them, along with Brandon Carr, it could free up $12 million total.
???Teams can begin cutting players Feb. 3. If you cut Phil Costa and Jeremy Parnell, you save $3 million.
???And then the big one: cutting DeMarcus Ware on June 1 to save nearly $13 million. a better option than restructuring Tony Romo, a 34 year old coming off back surgery.

Then, all the Cowboys have to do is draft well and they're on their way. Oh wait...never mind...will be more of the same.

This is the biggest obstacle for the Cowboys. JJ pays too much for his players. 8 and 8 wouldn't hurt as much if the Cowboys were 30 to 50 million under the salary cap. The highest paid 8-8 team.

It has been a long time since he got his money's worth.

The production hasn't matched the cost. Either Jerry doesn't sign talented players or the coaching isn't up to par. Either way the blame belongs to JJ.

It's both, but include he doesn't always draft the right players. Did he really need to draft a tight end in the 2nd round last year? NO!!

From what I read, they can re-structure enough deals to get under, then cut Austin and save more to sign their rookie class.

To get new free agents, they are going to have to cut players that you mentioned...Ware being the toughest of all.

My take on Ware is simple...he is slated to make $12.5 million base salary this year. They should get him to accept less and then pay it in a lump and spread the dough out.

If they do that, they can bring in some new faces on the Defensive side of the ball.

As far as your comment about their drafting...Dallas has done fairly well in recent drafts, so do not dismiss their ability to get the right faces on that side of the ball.

They missed a great opportunity last year in the 2nd round to get a very good defensive player but instead went with a TE. Stuff like that is what I'm talking about.

They swapped picks with the 49ers and then drafted Center Travis Fredrick at #31 and then took Escobar TE at #47. You're right though, they should have paid more attention to their defense in the draft.

I doubt Dallas will be a major factor in free agency with all their cap problems.

If I were Jerry Jones I would try bundling a bunch of players like the ones you mention and trading them so I can move up in the draft and get a QB or a quality defensive player.

Frederick turned out to be a very good pick and they needed help desperately on the o-line, but they needed help on the D and not so much a TE. That 2nd pick really needed to be a defensive pick. But JJ crapped in his pants again.

Sure, but they got blasted for trading down and taking Fredrick, which actually netted Williams in the 3rd.

Escobar was a bad move for now but the day Witten gets hurt, and we will be able to see what this kid can do.

But when I think of recent drafts, I think of Dez, Smith, Fredrick, Murray, Williams, Lee, and Claiborne...all talented players.

Be even better if Lee, Clairborn and Murray could stay on the field.

How about trading Romo too Oakland and give up a 1st and 2nd draft pick?

They thought the same thing with C.Palmer, [career] but he's still producing.

I was just being sarcastic with Narry isall. :-)

For those of us who harbored hope Jerry would get his financial house in order and get the salary cap situation under control, I offer this.

The usually optimistic Jones also delivered some sobering news Monday. He said don't look for the Cowboys' tight salary cap situation to get much better anytime soon.

"I don't ever see a time when we won't be under some serious challenges on the salary cap," Jones said. "That'll always be there for us because we're that aggressive with our dollars."
