NFL  > Dallas Cowboys  > Jerry Jones' QB Draft Philosophy
January 21, 2014, 08:07 AM
Well - here's some insight on Jerry drafting a QB. Sobering.

Given Romo???s age and condition, many have wondered if the Cowboys plan to prepare for the future by selecting his potential successor in the early rounds of the draft in May.

Jones said such a move was unlikely.

"I don???t anticipate drafting a quarterback high with where we are with Romo, especially one that might can play immediately and several of these guys in today???s NFL are playing pretty quick, [Seattle's Russell] Wilson, and [San Francisco's Colin] Kaepernick, and those guys who are move-around types, some of those guys who take a little more seasoning are your traditional quarterbacks, so all of that would figure in," he said. "An early pick would be more inclined to be one that you would say use now. The other thing we???ve got is when you draft out of that first round, those are four-year contracts and three-year contracts as you go down, so to some degree, you???re just drafting one to develop for somebody else."

Who ever believes anything teams say about drafting in the first place? There is still a long time until they know exactly what Romo's back is going to be able to do or not do. I'm more troubled by the fact that there have been no changes to the coaching staff (except Wes Phillips) and there won't be. Now THAT's sobering. UGH!!

You have Kitna. Nuff said.

Really? He went back to his teaching gig.

I can't believe I am writing this, but I agree with everything Jerry Jones said.

I'm sure he can be lured back. Plus you have Orton, who is like Romo-lite.

Yeah, because the current philosophy has produced such stellar results.

Why don't you recount all the success the Raiders have had with quarterbacks in the last decade.

more accurate. lol!!

unless they blow the whole mess up with the exeption of about 6-8 guys, doesn't matter who the QB is.

If his draft record was a little more stellar, so would I.

But it's not.

If you are going to be mediocre, you might as well be exciting.

Draft the best WR available, cut Ware, sign an O-Lineman or two, and light up the (massive) scoreboard.

But it's not.

In their current position (Romo signed long term), drafting a qb with a high pick makes zero sense.

Just wait until Jerry starts drafting QBs by the fastest 40 time.

Wait till you hear JJ say...'HERE'SSSSSSS JOHNNY'!!

Having 30-35 million in cap space designated for one position doesn't seem to be very prudent.

As I said on another thread. It's JJ's money and he will be as stupid with it as he pleases. He seems to be doing a damn good job in that respect.

Good point!

And you seem to have avoided the question. Last time I looked, Jerry wasn't drafting for the Raiders.

Was there an injury clause in Romo's contract?
