NBA  > General NBA  > Toronto Raptors Dwane Casey needs to uncuff Greivis Vasquez
February 11, 2014, 09:39 PM
Is time for Toronto's coach Dwane Casey to let Greivis Vasquez play basketball, let him shoot the ball 10 to 15 times a game.

I looked through Vasquez's history going back to his Terp days and found that he always has been a 43 percent shooter.

In his stay with New Orleans and the few months with Sacramento (still recovering from a foot surgery)Vasquez was shooting 43 percent when he put up the ball 10 to15 times.

Greivis Vasquez is sort of a streaky shooter, he may miss the first three or four shots but he may hit six of the next ten, again about 43 percent.

I may be just guessing here but it appears to me that coach Casey shuts Vasquez down when he misses a few shots.

I feel is fair to ask if Casey has transformed a 43 percent lifetime shooter into a 34 percent player by not having enough confidence in him and shutting him down.

Now that Vasquez is moving like the pre-injury NBA assist leader, it may benefit coach Casey to let the guy play and most important don't panic when he misses a few shots, you might of noticed the guy always hits the important shots when the team is making a run.

The Toronto Raptors are full of 43 percent shooters, DeRozan 42 percent, Lowry 42 percent and Terrence Ross 40 percent and before Vasquez got to Toronto he also was a 43 percent shooter. I understand those are the top scorers on team but they do put it up 15 to 20 times a game.

A healthy Vasquez had 25 double-doubles last year around 15 point average and was the assists leader in the NBA on a team that was not very good, if some of those guys in New Orleans could of hit the side of a barn he could of had 15 plus assists a game. Hope that does not offend anyone but facts are what they are.

Am I wrong folks?

Here is an interesting stat, when DeMar scores over 25 points Toronto loses more than they win. The last five game he has two games with 36 points and they lost them both. Maybe is time to spread the wealth a little.

Just saying.

As always this is a fans opinion and from what I understand everybody has one and I'm thankful for that.

Enough said.

If you looked into the mirror, you would see the most uninformed person in the history of Fan
Nation. You make such outlandish comments without any support of facts, and you are incapable of accepting constructive criticism, and worst than that you are incapable in believing you are ever wrong, even when proven.

For you to think that I am the most uninformed person that you have seen in ten years just proves, that you have the mind of a child.

I would laugh, but it is not funny, because you are pathetic.

I think you awnsered your own question. Vasquez is a starter on a horrible team, and a bench/role player on a good team. He can't create his own shot, or have an abundance of athleticism like Demar, and he doesn't bring the three point shooting or defensive abilities as a Lowry, to go along with his 43% shooting. He has the ability to be a playmaker, but to be fair, at best he is a poor mans Jose Calderon.

Now if you watch a lot of Raptors games, there seems to be, more often than not, an inability to hold on to the lead when Kyle sits and Greivis is running the team. The only way I would like to see him shot 10-15 shots a game, is if Lowry is injured, IMO.

February 12, 2014  04:49 PM ET

Also, it took him 13 shots a game to average 13.9 points, which shows he isn't a efficient enough of a scorer for a good team to to hand him 10 to 15 shots a game. In comparison, Lowry is taking 12.6 shots this year, and averageing almost 3 points more a game. Demar averages 18.2 shots a game, averaging 4 points more than that. Thats per game, so you can see over the duraration of a season, the more points you score on less shots, will make the difference between a win and a loss on a lot of nights. Again, I think he's a good role player on a good team, and a good starter on a lousy team. Which would you rather cheer for.

So what you are saying is that he is a mediocre player...

Actually, you are wrong.

Vasquez averaged 13.9ppg, 9apg and 4.3rpg with the Hornets last season as a starter. He was traded to the Kings as part of a package for Tyreke Evans when they acquired Jrue Holiday from the Sixers.

A bum doesn't average 9apg.

Listen to yourself...the Charlotte Hornets have to have somebody make some form of statistics...they are a team, not a very good one...but they count.

Maybe he can carry his bum **** back to Charlotte and get some playing times.

February 13, 2014  10:30 AM ET

He's still not fully recovered IMO. Too many times lately he's been a liability on the court with only a few games of impact - and most of those came when paired with Lowry.

This is not to say he won't improve, but right now he's not playing well --- and that has NOTHING to do with Casey. (Casey has given him many opportunities to succeed in many different scenarios.)

no no no a million times no to Vasquez getting 10-15 shots a game. He needs to calm down, not get unleashed

I dont know whats happened to that player. NO must of been the perfect system for him, or maybe his foot is really bothering him, but he has been terrible in toronto.

I agree somewhat but are a bit uninformed about Vaz, fair enough you don't know him before he came to Toronto..
DeMar is a Rudy Gay clone, he needs to take 20 + shots a game to be happy, so expect him to be traded along with Lowry. This team will not be the same next year, this new management are not going to change their plans just because they are winning in a lousy division. Casey will probably be gone also..

I do not agree with you I stand by my article...I feel Casey shuts him down because he passes up too many open shots after he misses a few..

Funny thing is that the coach does not think that way..at least that is what he said, but hey is just the coach. I think their knowledge is overrated us fans and bloggers know better....lol

Of course you do not agree, that is your MO.

Even though the facts say that he is a journeyman, that does not play good defense, in your mind, the whole world is wrong, and you are right.

You prove me right with every post...thanks
