NFL  > Dallas Cowboys  > draw your own conclusions

Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett and most of his staff attended SMU's basketball practice Tuesday, watching and learning from Mustangs head coach Larry Brown.

"You just got to talk to him and have a conversation with him and take good mental notes, because when you go home, you're going to talk a lot of notes and remember what he was talking about, because it's really valuable stuff."

This isn't the first time Garrett has watched Larry Brown at work. In fact, he came to SMU last year, and this time Garrett brought his entire staff.

And there they were, Garrett and his assistants taking notes. And if you wondering about how it all translates from the hardwood to the gridiron, I'll let the only head coach on the planet with both and NCAA and an NBA title break it down.

"You don't always have all the guys that you want," Brown explained, "so the most important thing is: Teach 'em up and make 'em better."

Brown says he is convinced Garrett gets that. Meanwhile, Garrett says he was impressed with the way Brown goes about his work.

hmm,.... the same larry brown that got ~fired~ coaching in the NBA.....??

Yup Mother. My favorite part of the story is when Brown says you don't always have the players you want but you have to team them up and make the ones better that you have. The Cowboys haven't been able to do that since Jimmy Johnson was walking the sidelines.

He's actually running a good program, so it seems at SMU. They are ranked 23rd now last I looked. The basketball team there hasn't been relevant in about 30 years.

I think that story has already been written and the answer is NO.

Bill Belichick was just average when he coached the Browns but became a genius when he coached the Patriots. He learned from his earlier mistakes and became one of the best head coaches in the NFL.
