NHL  > General NHL  > Ovechkin needs to tone it down
March 2, 2009, 04:49 PM
Now before I get jumped on by Caps fans, I'm saying that Alex Ovechkin is definitely one of the most talented players in the NHL today, right up there with Crosby. Ovechkin can hit, take hits, and obviously, score. But... I think he needs to tone it down a bit. He scores a goal and starts doing leg kicks and fist pumps and jumping face first into the glass. I mean c'mon... act like you've scored before. As the great Don Cherry put it... "he looks like a soccer player out there."
The other thing that bothers me about him, which I've seen him do a couple times now, is blasting a puck at the goalie AFTER a whistle. He gets called for offsides and still takes a shot. Really? C'mon now... grow up. He better watch himself, because even though he's a big guy, one of these times there's going to be a big defenseman waiting for him. Someone, somewhere is going to cut him down at center ice... someone like Laracque or Chara.
