NFL  > Green Bay Packers  > Who Else thinks the Packers should be hotly pursueing Barnes?
March 3, 2009, 09:24 AM
Khalif Barnes is the best available Offensive tackle in FA. He is also only 27. The packers have the cap room and he is a very safe pickup because he has never been injured in his 4 year career. He could fill in for Mark Tauscher right away and give us youth as well. What do you guys think?

Also, what do you think about Igor Olshansky?

I think that it would be nice if TT would go after anybody. The only significant free agent to produce any results whatsoever has been Charles Woodson. It sickens me to see these guys just pass by. I understand that TT wants to build through the draft but what have we gotten there? For the past couple of years we have gotten very little return on 1st and 2nd round draft picks (see J. Harrell).

March 4, 2009  04:19 PM ET

I agree it would be good to see some FA action around here, but I disagree that TT hasn't gotten much out of the draft, especially in Rds 1 and 2.
2005- Rodgers in Rd 1, Collins in Rd 2
2006- Hawk in Rd 1, Jennings in Rd 2
2007- Jackson in Rd 2
2008- Nelson in Rd 2

Not to forget the other 5 rounds either, where you really build a team through the draft, we've gotten guys like Blackmon, Jolly, Jones, Crosby, and Wynn. Sure none are likely to become HoF'ers or even ProBowl, but we've got good depth at many positions through the drafts.
I'm not saying we have the perfect team, but, overall, I think TT has done a better than average job at putting together the team through both the draft and FA.

...waiting for the backlash for even suggesting that TT is not a dunce...

March 4, 2009  04:33 PM ET

Barnes would be a great addition if they could get him - and who knows, they might be talking with him and we don't know it yet.

March 4, 2009  06:21 PM ET

TT knows exactly were to find talent, YOUNG talent.

BUT his downfall is he does not like free agency and vetran players

(waffle cone- great points...only thing i dissagree with is that u mentioned Pro bowl. the pro bowl is only a popularity contest) -some of our great packers have never been there before or rarley. (harris(2), jennings(0), driver(3 or 4), collins(1) and so fourth....

March 4, 2009  06:22 PM ET

does any body know why taucher has not been re-signed yet?

March 4, 2009  06:55 PM ET

I'd like to see olshansky..... maybe Jason Taylor or Burnett (i believe thats his name LB from the cowboys) to play outside linebacker opposite Kampman.

Maybe letting the market set for O-Line so that they pay him what he is worth and no more

March 5, 2009  09:51 AM ET

bshook87, although i would hope that be true that they are talking with him, the chances are slim. This is TT, and he has been better drafting in the mid to later rounds than in the 1st 2 rounds in the draft. The only players in the 1st 2 rounds TT has drafted since he got here that really panned out nicely has been Jennings and Rodgers. Other than that, nobody has really lived up to expectations besides Collins last year. Hawk has been solid, but not worthy of that 5th overall pick..

March 5, 2009  09:57 AM ET

armchair_probowler- yes you are right about Burnett from the cowboys. I also like him along with Gabe Watson the NT from ARizona and Ellis Wyms, DT Minensota. Watson helped turned Arizonas run defense around great and hes still real young, 25 (i believe).....

March 5, 2009  01:41 PM ET

TT needs to try to sign some FA starters. His record in the draft is OK after guys get a little experience, but as far as making an impact immediately... Having said that, we need help at linebacker and O-line. If we are going to a 3-4, we need help! Hawk, Barnett, Kampman are all very capable, but there is one missing...Jason Taylor perhaps? He may be athletic enough to fill the other outside LB position. I won't even pretend to be able to speak intelligently about the O-line.

March 5, 2009  05:20 PM ET

Okay I concede but for the picks that we have had I think that we could have done ALOT better. For instance....Brandon Jackson, what has he really done for us? He's not a starter nor does it look like he will become one very soon. You can't say Hawk really cause he hasn't lived up to his draft selection. Rodgers looks like he is going to be very good and I pray that he is but it just one year so far. I was intrigued to for a second when J. Taylor was released but he is getting old and why would you pass on all the young talent just to throw away money on an older guy that is in decline. Unless, you are talking about Ray Lewis. If that guy was 85 I'd sign him to a 2 year contract just on principle. A guy like that hardens up a team. Especially a soft run team like GB. I think all of the really good young talent is gone at DE, DT, and LB. Time to make a move for Julius Peppers.

March 5, 2009  07:13 PM ET

Rakscout....good analysis, but julius peppers? that is one headache that would not fit the Packers at all. Think about the packer's recent headaches javon walker and Mike McKenzie. Their gone for a reason. I woul;d rather sign a leader (and a previous defensive player of the year) than a headache like peppers who his whole career has been up and down.

I wouldn't call him up and down. He is physical freak of nature and loves getting after the quarterback. I've never heard about any locker room craziness from him either. This is the only time that you have heard anything about him being upset or causing a stir. As far as stirs go, this was extremely mild. I think he just wants a place to grow into his potential.

Not to whale on u but how bout these stats- (since 2002) -02= 12 sacks, '03=7 sacks, '04=11 sacks, '05=10.5 sacks, '06= 13 sacks, '07= 2.5 sacks, yes 2.5! and played the ENTIRE year except for 2 games!!. '08= 14.5 sacks. That is pretty much considered up & down to me. And if u look at his paycheck, he isnt worth that much. And the Panthers D isnt that bad either....

IMHO it all comes down to the checkbook. The Vikings have owners with big checkbooks who spend on free agency for talent and then have the luxury of picking the best athlete available in the draftThey had solid running but picked Adrian Peterson because he was the best person available at that pick.

The lions owner is the cheapest in the league and the bears owner is a close second and I beleive Ted has a very small checkbook to deal with.

If its all about money, then the Vikes are going to dominate the division for years to come. I mean you spend three years with great drafts. the fourth year those players leave for free agency so just when all the pieces are in place, the team breaks up and your starting over again. Under the vikes scenario they don't put themselves in this position. I keep telling myseld 'its the money stupid'.
