NFL  > San Francisco 49ers  > 49'ers Might have the worst 8 year draft history

Has anyone noticed how bad this team uses it's draft picks. Look at this depressing list. It would be hard to find a team that has done worse.

2008 Kentwan Balmer -DT- #29
2007 Patrick Willis -LB- #11 *I will never argue this pick
2007 Joe Staley -OT- #28
2006 Manny Lawson -LB- #22
2005 Alex Smith -QB- #1
2004 Rashaun Woods -WR- #31 *BUST--Players below are no longer on the roster--
2003 Kwame Harris -OT- #26 *BUST
2002 Mike Rumph -DB- #27 *BUST
2001 Andre Carter -DE- #7 *Serviceable
2000 Julian Petersen -LB- #16 *Soild
2000 Ahmed Plummer -DB- #24

I think id be easy to find a team with worse first round picks.. Patrick Willis raises the grade by himself, JPeterson is wa whole lot better than "solid" and Andre Carter was solid (serviceable..?) in the 43 defense. I still have hope for Lawson and Staley, Balmer is a solid backup but doesnt seem to be much more. Plummer was okay for the first few years with SF but injuries stopped him early. Rumph is terrible, that pick alone is depressing. Same with Kwame. Rashaun Woods..what a joke...the next four players drafted after Woods- Ben Watson, Karlos Dansby, Chris Snee & Igor Olshanky!!! and who was drafted 12 picks after Woods? Bob Sanders. Anyone from the involved in the '04 draft should be fired this moment. And Alex..?

How about the last 15 years for the Chicago Bears. The names Enis, Terrell, Benson, Grossman, McNown, and Salaam are a Mt. Rushmore of negative drafting. Yes, they hit on Urlacher and maybe Tommie Harris, but very little else(Olsen is off to a decent start and Williams didnt play last year).

Year Player Pos. School Pick #
2008 Chris Willimams OT 14
2007 Greg Olsen TE Miami 31
2006 No Pick -- -- --
2005 Cedric Benson RB Texas 4
2004 Tommie Harris DT Oklahoma 14
2003 Michael Haynes DE Penn State 14
2003 Rex Grossman QB Florida 22
2002 Marc Colombo OT Boston College 29
2001 David Terrell WR Michigan 8
2000 Brian Urlacher LB New Mexico 9
1999 Cade McNown QB UCLA 12
1998 Curtis Enis RB Penn State 5
1997 No Pick -- -- --
1996 Walt Harris DB Mississippi State 13
1995 Rashaan Salaam RB Colorado 21
1994 John Thierry DE Alcorn State 11

I'm a true 49ers fan so i can testiefy to that .And i think they need to start this draft with he best pick they can get .I think a wideout

March 13, 2009  06:36 PM ET

This guy doesn't know what he's talking about. Willis is one of the best LB in the game today,Peterson was getting to be that way before he was traded,Carter was good in his prime but just got old,Plummer was good till he got hampered with injuries and the rest didn't turn out great but were highly scouted in the draft. In my opinon the lions have had the worst luck in the draft the last several years or the bengals.

I really believe that if Alex Smith got the chance to play with another Offensive Co-Ordinator as good as Norv Turner and had a decent O-Line in front of him, he would indeed prove to be a pretty good QB.

I'd bet money on it, as he played fairly well for Norv.

There is no question that the 49ers have been a bad organization since the firing of Steve Mariuchi. Remember that after Walsh, and Carmen Policy, and of course, Eddie DeBartolo leaving... the Niners felt like a rudderless ship as an organization... Not just the draft, but who they spent the money on... whether it was UCLA guru-- Terry Donahue; or the well-dressed sideline man who didn't know the meaning of "time-out"-- Mike Nolan. They have gotten "lucky" with pick-ups like Terrell Owens from Tennessee Chattannooga; Jeff Garcia a castoff from San Jose State who MVP of the CFL; not to mention Frank Gore

Everyone stop. Take an honest look at the players listed above, other than Willis, who among them is going to be an all-pro or top 5 at their respective position. We should want and expect that our GM's, coaches and front office are looking for that type of player. Calling a player serviceable isn't a compliment unless he is surrounded by hall of famers IE the Patriots. We need game changes and players who put more pride into the effort they give on the field. If you a true 49ers fan you have either been to a few games or watched almost all of them on TV and have seen the product we put on the field. It's simply not good enough to compete for a CHAMPIONSHIP. Period. We should take this upcoming draft as a chance to get closer to that goal, and simply put over the last 8 drafts we haven't.

1991 2 Eric Turner: good, but died of intestinal cancer at age 31
1992 9 Tommy Vardell FB/RB: amassed 1,070 yds in 4 years (2 TD's)
1993 14 Steve Everitt C: lasted 3 years with the club
1994 9 Antonio Langham decent player, lasted 2 years with browns (4 INT's)
29 Derrick Alexander WR: 2 years with the browns 1,044 yds, 2 TD's, 5 fumbles
1995 30 Craig Powell LB: one year with club--no stats on nfl.com
1996 Suspended operations from 1996-1998
1997
1998
1999 1 Tim Couch * QB: huge bust--11,131 yds, 64 TDs, 67 INTs,
37 fumbles (14 lost) in 5 years.
2000 1 Courtney Brown * DE: 17 sacks in 5 years--not first round material
2001 3 Gerard Warren DT: good if you want to just fill space and not pressure
QB
2002 16 William Green RB: 2109 rush yds, 9 TDs in 5 years
2003 21 Jeff Faine C: decent, i think he was alternate to Pro Bowl one year (prob not with the browns.
2004 6 Kellen Winslow II TE: Gone! only played in 44 out of 80 games
2005 3 Braylon Edwards WR: questionable with 15-20 drops per season
2006 13 Kamerion Wimbley LB : 11 sacks rookie year, 9 in last two years.
2007 3 Joe Thomas OT: STUD
22 Brady Quinn QB: Yet to be seen, but a lot of money sitting on the bench
2008 No draft pick

*went back to 1991 since the browns didn't have a team from 1996-98. arguably worse

April 8, 2009  04:55 PM ET

jeff faine and derard warren are the only active players on this list that were drafted on/before the 2003 draft.

April 8, 2009  04:57 PM ET

wow, i think i meant from those drafted between 1991-2003 warren and faine are the only ones still playing.

April 10, 2009  02:57 PM ET

you forgot Vernon

April 25, 2009  07:58 PM ET

12 first rounds in 9 years proves that the 49ers were somewhat first round happy, though in their defense they did a bit of trading down to get more first round picks.
Of the 11 first rounds they made in the past 9 years, Harris, Woods, and Rumph can all universally be considered busts by any metric applied. Smith, Lawson, Staley can as worse be considered underachievers, though it may be too early to make a judgment call on Staley, Lawson when not injured has played decently, and Smith probably would have done better had the 49ers system been better.
It is way too soon for the jury to be out on Balmer, but his selection at #29 barely qualifies him as first round pick. Peterson was awesome, Plummer was awesome before he started to suffer injuries. The expectations for Andre Carter were probably a bit higher than they should have been, but whatever the criticism of him might be, no one can say he didn't give a consistent level of play.
Patrick Willis looks to be a super star. Vernon Davis, selected #7 in 2006, is only 25 years old, and I still have a high opinion of him despite the injury he suffered in his second season. I wouldn't give up a Staley, Smith, Lawson, and definitely not on Balmer.
The troubles with the 49ers have been their disastrous drafts from 2002-2004, and their misuse of Smith.

April 29, 2009  09:03 PM ET

But now the draft is over and you dont have to worry about a bad draft, because yal got Micheal Crabtree. I would be throwing a party if i was yal. Hes a beast

April 30, 2009  01:50 AM ET

Are u kidding me? The 9ers might not have the best draft history but its way better than some teams. Patrick Willis and Joe Staley are starters and Vernon Davis might be a good player. You are an idiot for saying the 9ers have the worst 8 year draft history.
