NFL  > Kansas City Chiefs  > Cassel and Sanchez...
March 5, 2009, 05:24 PM
The predictions in the draft say USC Sanchez will be picked in the first round of this year's draft. I really got confused by that prediction. Because since Matt Cassel joined the Chiefs last week. Would it be a real good move to bring in Sanchez. Because the big thing was Cassel got a pretty good place to go to. Why would they bring in Sanchez. Isn't it kind of insulting Cassel that he could probably be a backup to a team for a 2nd time?

The Chiefs filled their need for a quarterback. They will do one of the following.

1. Draft ILB Aaron Curry
2. Draft LT Eugene Monroe (Branden Albert's teammate at Virginia) or the best tackle on the board.
3. Trade down and get more picks
4. Shock everyone and select a wide receiver

I don't think the defensive ends available warrent the # 3 overall pick.

KC's draft board should look like this:

1. Curry
2. Arakpo
3. Crabtree
4. Best OT available
5. Best WR available (if Crabtree is gone...which he will be)
Then take the best athlete available for all remaining picks at any positions not addressed yet.

Sorry.. #2 Orakpo... my bad

March 6, 2009  09:52 AM ET

Orakpo is not worth a #3. If you want to trade down and pick him at 8, 9 or 10 then fine, but there's better quality out there.

Crabtree's fractured foot and prospect of coming to camp late because of it, could make him slide down the board. If you're a new GM and you want to set up your team for years to come, you find a guy that can be here for the next 10 years. Linemen and linebackers are good for that reason.

March 6, 2009  10:03 AM ET

We still haven't addressed the fact that only 2 of our 5 offensive linemen are good enough to be considered starters by the majority of NFL teams. That means that three of our other positions C, RG and RT are filled by journeymen / back-ups and not quality. We may have a potential franchise QB in Cassel... Wouldn't it be wise to protect him?

If you look at the Chiefs success of the nineties, it was fueled by guys like Dave Szott, John Alt, Tim Grunhard, Will Shields, John Tait, Willie Roaf & Brian Waters. I know the big uglies aren't the position of glamour, but it sets the tone for the entire offense. The Chiefs just have too many holes in their offensive line for a young guy like Cassel to succeed. Upgrading that offensive line needs to be a high priority. Whether that's through free agency (Tra Thomas RT) or in the NFL Draft (1st or 3rd round), it needs to be addressed.

I totally agree with KC Guy. The OL is where we need to focus.

March 6, 2009  05:48 PM ET

Chiefs will pick Aaron Curry if he is available. If Curry is already taken, then they will either pick the best OL or trade down.

March 6, 2009  06:10 PM ET

you can't pass on Curry, the line is week, but so is the LB corps in KC. Can't wait to watch KC and Denver play this year, its going to be sad on both our parts. Waist of a pick on Sanchez unless someone really wants him and you can trade up for more picks and get a good OL. This is a heavy LB draft class.

I think this points out the difference in our views... I don't consider losing in the playoff a success.

That is an opinion, not a fact.

But these numbers don't lie. The best offense DOES NOT WIN CHAMPIONSHIPS. The best defense does. KC needs to get the D into the top 5. The O can be anywhere from middle of the league to better, and it will be enough.

The Steelers were #22 in the NFL last year, the Chiefs were #24. KC was only 2 spots higher than the World Champs. If that doesn't scream FIX THE DEFENSE, then what does?? How about this then... The top 10 offensive teams last year were gone before the AFC/NFC championship games. Does that make any bells ring?

Those are just facts, not opinions.
