NFL  > Green Bay Packers  > According to Sources, New possible Pickups for Green Bay!
March 10, 2009, 09:49 AM
According to:

The Green Bay Packers are currently on Keith Burnett's destination list for contract negotiations. Burnett is scheduled to go to Green Bay saturday, but has 2 visits with 2 other teams during the week, and may not make it to Saturday...
Also, the Packers aare in discussion with Vonnie Holiday's agent on a contract with the former Packer...

And, Jason Taylor's name is floating around with a possible offer from TT...

The Jason Taylor case is still a rumor, but the Packers are as of today negotiating with Holiday and have a trip planned for Burnett on Saturday.

IMO Burnett would be a great addition to win the starting job at the other OLB spot, and Holiday will bring much needed depth to the D-line. Holiday also played in the 3-4 the past 3 years and played with Dom Capers. If we cant get Burnett, IMO i think we need to sign Taylor.

Watcha Think guys????

March 10, 2009  09:52 AM ET

Teams interested in Burnett: Oakland, San Diego and Houston.

March 10, 2009  10:38 AM ET

Vonnie Holiday would bring some desperately needed leadership to this team. Class act and should still have something left...

March 10, 2009  02:37 PM ET

Yea he had 8 sacks when Capers was his D-coordinator 2 years ago...but that was 2 years ago. Although, depth at the D-line cant hurt, plus it wont be busting the bank. Dont u think TT should be looking for a PUNTER?? lol please dont pull a Mike Sherman adn draft 1 in the 3rd round!

March 10, 2009  07:35 PM ET

jason taylor is a bum. he refuses to go to offseason camps and takes plays off. he was a great player, but if he wished to devote his time to his family he should do so, not cost his team valuable money.

we (okay- THE packers need julius peppers for a darastic change)

btw what did you guys think of the new pickup anthony smith- i think the guy is a joke, and arrogant punk and troublemaker....NICE PICKUP TT

March 10, 2009  08:42 PM ET

I hope Smith does better than I think he will. Doesn't appear to me to be any type of upgrade. Not impressed at all.

March 11, 2009  09:17 AM ET

Not an upgrade, and a stupid signing. Should have picked Bodden up instead. Pats signed him for only $750,000! He only suffered with the lions bc they play zone and, well, there the LIONS! We didnt need another #2 safety. He already proved hes not starting caliber in Pitt.
Should have signed Bodden TT!

March 11, 2009  10:04 AM ET

Thompson won't sign anyone unless no one else wants them.

Hope he makes a better pick than Harrell, that was a great one...

March 12, 2009  07:56 AM ET

smith is a waste of a pickup. seriously, he will be lucky to survive the year on the roster. I would pay a year's salary just to figure out what TT is thinking sometimes. He makes terrible football decisions.

March 12, 2009  09:50 AM ET

Yes he does, mostly in FA and early on in the draft. But he only signed Smith to a minimum year contract, so its not like its really going to hurt the PAckers. But he needs to sign better palyers! BTW Burnett signed with the Chargers so hes gone.

March 12, 2009  10:05 AM ET

#10 is right, the deal was cheap and beneficial to the Packers because if he produces they got a deal and if the blows out then they didn't really lose anything they wouldn't have lost on any other comparable player.

Our D is not a few players from being good, especially players that have never been in the NFL. The draft might bring us some talent, but it seems like Thompson would rather rebuild over a couple years than make a run at anything now. That could be the right choice, no one will no until next fall.

March 12, 2009  04:17 PM ET

What are the chances that we can get Ron Wolf to come back and save the franchise. TT sucks.

March 12, 2009  05:12 PM ET

They need a new qb.

March 12, 2009  05:13 PM ET

I don't think TT has been bad at all. Signing people at ridiculous prices is dumb. They aren't worth the money and it makes other players on your team wonder why they aren't getting paid more. The reason out D fell apart this year was they lost Nick Barnett, Atari Bigby and Cullen Jenkins. Injuries happen, it's not TT's fault. The team is built to be solid for years as it is. Yeah we need to get two new players for our front seven on D and a Punter. Those are really our only immediate needs. There are still tons of guys out there we can get for a deal (I've mentioned them on other pages before). A. Smith is a good pick up because he already knows the defense and can help other players in the secondary pick it up. People need to relax cause TT has done a good job.

March 12, 2009  05:18 PM ET

Yeah, cause Romo is obviously better. Oh wait, that's right Rodgers had a higher QB Rating, More TD's, less INT's, more yards and won just as many playoff games last year.

March 12, 2009  10:30 PM ET

heres my two cents... I agree with john from VA on one thing, TT is not doing that bad of a job... afterall, packers are still the youngest team, from a 13-3 year, to 6-10, which could have easily been 10-6 or even 11-5 becasue we lost 6 games by 4 or 3 points and 1 game by one point... also, the 6-10 season came with with an injured barnett, Jenkins, and Bigby, and al harris was out 4 weeks i believe, and all with a first year starting quarterback in rodgers... with all that said our defense did suck pretty bad, i don't for-see the defense being that bad again they made the right choice to fire most of their coaches, and start over fresh, we'll see how this all turns out... also most of the players we have are credit to TT, since he's been back with the packers in 2005. only 8 players were there before he was... also for John from VA we also kinda need a tackle, cause we may not have tauscher next season... but i also agree that TT needs to do more to get us over the hump... otherwise we'll be nothing more than "That Team" that cant get past the first round... we have a solid future... be excited guys! ....and girls too, i guess....

March 13, 2009  09:15 AM ET

Signing people at ridiculous prices is dumb, but i never said to do that. Obviosly you cant risk your future on 1 or 2 players signing them to $100 million dollar contracts a piece (Washington tells you that), but you can still sign the role-playing FA at a low price. Smith is a no risk, possible reward player. We signed him to a very low contract. But think what TT could do now that the big fish are off the market:
- Sign a good punter (they dont cost a lot at ALL! biggest need and would help the defense out)
-Most of the elite OT's will be gone in the draft, and it doesnt seem like Tausher will come back, so why not sign Khalif Barnes?
-Then all they have to do is focus on the front 7 in the draft, and a pass-rushing OLB.

March 13, 2009  10:28 AM ET

signing a press coverage corner when you are no longer going to play press coverage is dumb....where do you come up with this crap...they are not negotiating with vonnies agent they have not contacted him......

March 13, 2009  12:03 PM ET

I agree that we two new tackles, but most of what I have read indicates the Packers staff has a lot of faith in out younger guys (especially Breno Giacomini and Josh Sitton). I have my doubts but I had my doubts back in 2000 with Tausher and Clifton too, and it worked out pretty well. If Tausher can't make it back to form Breno could get the start or Colledge could slide to RT and Sitton could play guard. None of this is ideal obviously, but I truly think it's as good an option as signing any of the guys left on the market right now at tackle. I hope we draft our future LT this year, but I don't see the position as a need in free agency for now. Of course come next year I could be eating those words.

If the Packers are going 3-4 why would they ever even want Jason Taylor? He is down to like 245 pounds and isn't even big enough to play 3-4 linebacker let alone 3-4 defensive end. 3-4 DE's are normally around 295+. They should probably draft Tyson Jackson at number 9 to play DE. He is 295 although that might be only a couple picks to high for him to go. Or they draft Everette Brown and put him at the other OLB spot.
