NFL  > Oakland Raiders  > What winning ways is Al Davis talking about getting back to?
March 13, 2009, 03:00 PM
1966 thry 1985 one the best teams ever, the numbers are staggering, but that was 23 years ago.

Last 23
11 Losing seasons
8 seasons with more than 10 losses, current streak of 6 (*11 loss Seasons) League record
5 (8-8) seasons
2 (9-7) seasons
*(Detroit Lions have 2 more wins in the last 6 seasons)

That is 16 out of 23 seasons they failed to win more than they lost. Add (2) mediocre 9-7 years and that is 18 out of 23 they were lame to say the least.

No playoffs in those 18 seasons.

5 seasons with 10 win or more (5 good seasons in 23 that's about 1 good season for every 5 bad seasons).

Playoff Games last 23 Years; 12, that's right 12 which is more than a few teams

Playoff Wins: 6
Playoff Losses: 6

3- AFC Championship games (in 2 they only managed a field goal, you spend the entire season trying to get to this game and all you put up is a field goal)

Lost to Buffalo 51-3*
Lost to Baltimore 16-3 in Oakland
Won against Tenn. 41-21

*Howie Long later said he knew they lost the day before the game because of the cold weather.

The only Superbowl they were they were losing by 31 points in the 3rd quarter, eventally losing by 28.

When Al Davis says they will get back to winning ways, he can't possibly think the last 23 years were winning, oh wait we are talking about the biggest nutjob on the planet.

Didnt they win a superbowl like 5 years ago with Gannon?

Its not Al Davis..its the players that arent stars..there just there...maybe if they acted like pro athletes theyd get somewhere...Raiders suck.

Just like it's not Jerry Jones in Dallas? I wouldn't be so quick to judge. The Cowboys and Raiders have an awful lot in common. The Cowboys may have more W's but lets be realistic.
The Raiders should be much improved in 2009.

Bunch of haters on this blog.

Go Raiders!!!!!!!!!

This is plagiarism at its finest. I saw this same article several months ago

And where have the Cowgirls gotten with their "stars" in the past 12 years? How about ZERO playoff wins. Even the Raiders (with their lack of talent) have done better than that. Maybe you should think before you speak. But I will forvie you. You are a Cowgirls fan after all.

You Know what, your article already said what winning ways. YOU might not remeber them, but AL sure does. You said so yourself, the numbers are staggering. "One of the best teams ever." You basically discredited your argument with your first sentence. If you need a more recent stat line, try this one:

3 time CONSECUTIVE AFC West champs.
A regular season record of 33-15 in those 3 years.
In the AFC championship game 2 out of 3 years.
One Superbowl appearance.
Lost the the eventual Superbowl Champs all three years.

This was for the 2000 to the 2002 seasons.

Point is, you can manipulate any stat to favor your argument. Name your team and I can find stats to either build them up or tear them down. It is that simple.

Obviously that is the winning way Al Davis is talking about getting back to........?

March 15, 2009  06:04 PM ET

2000-2002? thats coming up to a decade ago bud, sure you can favor your argument but when someone states need to get back to there winning ways shouldn't that mean something more then 3 years in the last 20? The Raiders Franchise is an absolute joke. By far one of the worst talent evaluators I've seen in a long time. Especially with there mid round picks 2-5. And who is to blame for this ineptitude? Al Davis. Thank god I'm not a raiders fan!

If you read the numbers I did include the Jon Gruden years, and what did Al do with that successful coach?

All he cares about is throwing the bomb, if it was about winning Jon and Rich would have brought a Championship to Oakland. Instead he taught Gannon everything he knew and taught his new corners (in Tampa) how to pick him off 6 times in the Superbowl.

And this old man is continually flushing this once proud franchise down the toilet.

What, does someone stop being a fan when your team loses?

Hey buddy, maybe you should look in the mirror before you speak. Tell you what; give me the playoff stats of the Dolphins 3 best years out of the last 20. Then we will stack them up with the 3 years that I mentioned. There is no comparison. I don???t remember the Dolphins in any recent Superbowl. Remember, this isn???t 1973 anymore. Maybe we should have renamed this article ???What winning ways was Bill Parcells talking about???? Could he be talking about the 1-15 campaign? That was in the last couple of years.

You see, it is all about how you define success. Do you define it as 20 years of mediocrity and then 7 years of brilliance a la the Patriots? Do you define it as always being the contender but never the victor a la any Schottenheimer lead team? If you define it by Superbowl wins or playoff victories, then your team has not fared any better than the Raiders. (The Dolphins were 6-11 in the playoffs since 1985 with 1 AFC Championship loss and 0 SB appearances) If you define it as a team???s regular season wins then you would have a point. Then again, I would say that your team couldn???t win the big one and that is pretty pathetic.

About the whole talent thing; where did your great talent get you? Did Marino win the big one? Ricky Williams? Duper? Clayton? OK. How about making it to the big dance in the last 20 years? The last time you were in the SB, it was a loss to the 49ers. This was only one year after the Raiders beat the Redskins in Superbowl XVIII. Like I said before, this isn???t 1973 anymore.

I apologize for the formatting. For some reason my apostrophes came out as ???. Sorry.

The Raiders have been terrible the past six years, but the previous 17 weren't what most teams would consider embarrassing. Not as good as 1966-85, but a Superbowl appearance and three AFC title games (should have been four - remember NE) is more than most teams accomplished during that period.

Davis is a polarizing figure, who people love to kick when he is down. The Raiders have made some pretty big mistakes with coaches and personnel the past few years, and he has to shoulder much of the blame since he is so actively involved in the football operations. The flip side of that is that he deserves much of the credit for the Raiders' successes. Clearly he loves the game, wants desparately to win and isn't shy about spending money to make the team better. The Raiders just need to spend the money smarter than they have recently.

Hopefully we've found a coach who is committed to the Raiders. Kiffin is a punk who used the Raiders as a stepping stone. He knew what kind of owner Davis was, and what level of involvement Davis would demand in football operations. Kiffin's dad has been around a long time and was working for Gruden. Kiffin took the job fully aware. Then he expressed interest in other jobs and publicly taunted Davis. He doesn't deserve a dime more and is well on his way to embarrassing himself at Tennessee.

Davis will turn the Raiders around again and quiet the skeptics. If Russell matures into a solid NFL QB, it should be sooner rather than later. Not saying they will be making a playoff run this year, particularly with the tough schedule, but I think they are on the right track.

I think it was more of a getting over the Bo Jackson injury misfortune. But then again they did lose to Buffalo earlier that year

I wish...We lost that one by a lot. I think we should've and could've won the 2 years prior but in 2000-01 Gannon is taken out by an illegal hit and in 2001-02 was "the call" against NE (that I think was rigged to help the Patriots go onto win the SB that year because of the 9/11 tragedy) that even Tom Brady said was a fumble...I even saw plays in the superbowl that convinced me that it was rigged especially at the end. That was a complete rigged miracle...

Hammered_everynight, you're forgetting one thing... who do you think made this "once" proud franchise so great? It was Al Davis and his influence didn't just affect the Raiders. He was a major factor in making the NFL as a whole what it is today. The man knows more about football than you, me and every other person on this board put together times a hundred. He has been in this business for over forty years man, and he's seen things that you and I only read about years after the fact because we weren't even born yet. Yes things might be a little screwed up right now but you cannot put all the blame on Al Davis. As a Raiders fan, I'll be the first to admit he does things that just make you want to scream in anger and start throwing things. However with his history and knowledge coupled with the fact that let's face it he doesn't have much time left, I look for him to do whatever it takes to reach the Super Bowl one last time before he dies. Also he has one of the greatest one season turn-around in league history under his belt, so I wouldn't underestimate him. The fact is that whether you love him, hate him or both, he is one of the greatest people to ever grace Pro Football with his influence hence why he is in the Hall Of Fame. With all that being said who are you to judge Al Davis for what he is doing with his team? What have you done for pro football that gives you the right to judge him? And as for all of you offer up stats and saying that Raiders fans need to stop living in the past, here's some food for thought for you. Any stat you quote is already the past no matter how recent or ancient its still the past and has no bearing whatsever on this coming season. So therefore your arguement using stats is pointless and futile. I can give you a few examples recent and ancient where a team with only ONE wins the whole season turned around and got double digit wins the next. One of which was the 1963 Oakland Raiders and the coach and GM at that time was Al Davis. I'm not trying to argue here I'm just pointing out the fact that the NFL is anything but predictable and that's why everybody loves it. So how bout we let the boys play before we start saying this team is better than that team and so on, because frankly none of us have any idea until the games are played. Furthermore, just because a team wins doesn't exactly mean they are better than the other team. All it means is that they played better on that day. Look at how many times a team has won or lost against a team and then later on in the season they went on to get the opposite result.

Oh Yes, Americas Team. You can start by hiring licensed contractors to build your practice facility before talking trash. Talk about the #1 choker Tony Romo !
The Raiders will win the Pre-season game and on Thanksgiving.
