NFL  > Philadelphia Eagles  > Big time draft!
March 13, 2009, 11:40 PM
This could be a huge draft for us, think of the options we have this year.
It is conceivable that we can get a starting caliber RB, TE, WR, with the first three picks. We have 12 which means we can move up in the second and grab any of the 3 positions mentioned. This could have a huge impact on the future of the offense.
Is it that far of a reach that Andy surprises us all and goes offensive skill positions with 1,2,3? He has tended the lines off/def the last few years...and we got a steal with D-Jack in the 2nd last year. I dont think we should trade for Boldin, we would have to give up picks, and he wants Fitz money. Nobody knows what he is going to be like without Fitz on the other side so why pay him a kings ransom? We could get some good young talent with the flexibility we have with all these picks, plus Lurie made the Forbes Mag. short list of American billionaires.(which should have all the picks signed and ready for camp)plus 40$ under the cap!
The defense is going to be great again, and we have depth there...We drafted linemen Gibson, McGlynn, and Dunlap last year and signed Andrews. There is depth at O-line despite reports from writers about glaring holes. Wells@21,Britt@28,Nelson or Cook(trading up in rd 2 of course). This draft has the potential to keep us making play-off runs the next 5 years if the skill positions are addressed early and aggressively.

If Lurie and Banner are serious that McNabb should get an extension then I totally agree with your article. Use all three of the top draft picks on offensive studs. But I say they better get Robiskie with one of those picks before the Giants get him to replace Plaxico. This kid is a STUD!! GREAT HANDS!(Best at the combines), GREAT SIZE!(Almost 6'3") and the most important GREAT INTEGRITY!(His father -the NFL coach- taught him to work hard and keep his mouth shut) This kid would be our Plaxico -- UNSTOPPABLE IN THE REDZONE!!!

The problem is that the Eagles are linked to trade talks with Buffalo to get Jason Peters to replace Tra Thomas at left tackle. The reports say that it will cost them one of those first round picks. Even if there is no trade, this regime has ALWAYS taken a lineman with one of there first two picks. Dave Spadaro even as much as said so on Daily News Live a couple of weeks ago. I would love pure offensive talent as I stated in my previous article, BUT I see them going O-LINE(trade or draft at 21) - TE(at 28) and RB(2nd round). I HOPE I AM WRONG!!!! GET YOUNG TALENT!!!

We got DeSean Jackson in the second round because he is undersized and teams were very concerned about his work ethic.

As for your concern about what Boldin can do without Larry on the opposite side of the field. These are his Rookie season numbers (2003, the year before Fitzgerald was drafted), 101 Rec 1,377 yards, 8 TDs. If they have a chance to get Boldin, they will.

The Eagles, in all probability, will not use both of their first round picks. They will likely be involved in a draft day play for a player (Perhaps Boldin, more likely Peters) or they will trade down for future picks.

However, if they do use all of their picks They'll probably go best available OT/DE (Probably Ebben Britton, and Michael Ayers) and then the opposite position (OT/DE) with the next pick, and trade up for Donald Brown in the second round.

They could also use the 28th pick for Knowshon Moreno is he's still available.

Or Michael Johnson

Hey creswag the #1 Titan fan here. Just wanted to let you guys know Tory Holt is a free agent, don't be surprised if he says he wants to play for the pass happy Andy Reid after he is done vacationing. I think you guys are wrong about Boldin he was the man before Fitz came there. he has been putting up solid stats that make him pro bowl worthy since his rookie year. Boldin knows what life is like without Fitz,Fitz doesn't know life without Boldin. Both of them playing on the same team makes life easy for them and Breaston. Boldin plays all over the field creating mismatches everywhere other players benefited from that too, he should be paid Fitz money. Don't plain on Reid drafting a WR,RBor TE with the first 3 picks, I have him taking OL,Safety,LB in that order. Maybe he will make and offer for Holt or attempt a trade for Boldin. Hey goodluck eagle fans!

March 16, 2009  05:43 PM ET

I stand corrected, "Know it all" enlightened me to Boldins rookie year success, I cant beleive I wasnt aware of that. If they dont pursue Boldin via draft day trade, I still would like to see a stud receiver taken early. Reid and Co. owe it to McNabb to surround him with better options at WR. D-Jackson is going to be better I believe, but there isnt that dominant force there that you can depend on when the game is on the line. I know everybody says Eagle fans are obsessed with WR's but you cant deny the magic 5 had with his new toy T.O. in 04. The domination was awesome to watch as a fan, even though they lost the superbowl...we got a taste of what 5 can do with a real wideout, not a filler. We as fans know the likes of Thrash, Pinkston, Small, Johnson, Mitchell, etc.,etc. All role players who just chipped in but didnt overwhelm defenses. This is a pass first offense, pull the trigger early on a stud wideout and see what happens. Every year I see other teams getting guys like Andre Johnson, Calvin Johnson, Dwayne Bowe...all great WR's on bum teams going nowhere fast. I understand it didnt work out with Fred-ex Andy...but how many years ago was that?

Please dont draft Torry Holt he's an outstanding wide reciever but the Eagles need a physical reciever....The eagles already have Curtis they need a stud and Reggie isnt getting the job done.

March 18, 2009  08:38 PM ET

Sorry, I didnt mean draft Torry Holt. However, they could go after A. Boldin if they give up Reggie Williams and a 3rd round draft pick Then pick up Torry Holt in free agency....Also not to forget I think the Eagles have a first round 28th pick in the draft, they should pick up a solid RB to spell Westbrook. This would make the Eagles scary! McNabb, Westbrook, Holt, Boldin and Jackson/Curtis in the slot OMG.....Not to mention a blitz crazy defense

March 20, 2009  10:28 PM ET

We'll see about a Boldin trade, but as far as the draft, the potential is there to land Pettigrew @21, a Good RB @28, and a good WR moving up in the second from the 3rd. Just 3 picks and you can see the dynamic of the offense already. Trade away the rest for higher picks next year and well be set.

March 29, 2009  11:44 AM ET

If Andy can reverse his trend of drafting OLs and DLs and do something bold, then yea, we could pick up some good weapons on offence and possibly find Dawkins' successor as well.

March 29, 2009  03:45 PM ET

As much as I respect Dawk and everything he has done...and will miss his intensity, persona, the vibe he gave just embodied a hero. The organization has foreseen his departure at some point(whether it may be retirement, free agency or injury). Jim Johnson has been tooling around with this defense, putting the pieces together for hopefully a seamless transition. Nobody will replace Brian (Weapon X) Dawkins...ever, but take a look at the roster. Dawkins was this defense for a long time, but there is strength in numbers. The D-tackles are good with Patt, Bunk, and Laws. The DE is promising with Cole, maybe the emergence of Abiamiri this year, and Clemons, Parker, and Howard. The LB are young and good, with expectations to only get better. The CB are srtong with Brown, Samuel, and Hanson. Now, the S are good with Mikell, the progression of Demps(who can play sideline to sideline), and Jones for depth.
The team had 48 sacks last season, and they were getting them from almost every position on the defensive unit. The will be good, if not better this year.
As previously stated, draft day trades for premiere players, or standing pat grabbing high prospect skill positions early will give the Eagles great strength and depth, and balance for years to come.
Andy...make this the mother of all drafts for us!

If they want Moreno, they better get him at 21. He won't make it to 28. But then Pettigrew won't make it to 28, either. Then they could try to move up a little bit in the second round and grab William Moore or Louis Delmas (safeties.) My guess is they take Pettigrew at 21 if he's there -- he's a TE, but he's a blocking force, so helps the run game as well as the pass.

Phillyfan5......I luv the fact that u mentioned Britt. I'm sold on him...but I fully agree with u....TE, RB, WR. If it comes down to it, sign O.P. for the line for a one year deal. Other moves we need to make is D-line with a vet and. Taylor lost it...no go...Peppers....ify.....to much for him..../CB just for dept pruposes. We should have a solid team.....We just need to work...I'm not to sold on big talker Freddie Mitchell...LOL.....D. Jackson - can back it up-but he did have some drops...and his first should have been touch down...rookie...so S jones needs to back it up. Winston Justice needs to do just this (I made a funny-LOL) have a break out off season..He needs a complete make over.....21-Pettigrew , 28-Britt, trade up in the 2nd for an RB

March 31, 2009  09:20 PM ET

Sincerenjnj,
There are a few things to consider with some of my previous posts.
If this is a perfect world, and trading 21 for Boldin, and 28 for Peppers...that would be a great start. They could always package picks to move up and grab the best RB available in the 2nd rd. And they have the cash to pay those players who would provide immediate rewards.
The only reason I came up with this scenario is because with the multiple picks in the 1st rd.(21,28) 12 overall, plus $40 mill under the cap...it seems as if they would be the only team who could pull off such a bold move.
My draft scenario on the other hand has a slight modification, if they were to stand pat with the picks they have.
At 21 I am at a crossroad if TE Pettigrew, and Moreno or Brown are sitting there. My gut tells me to go with Pettigrew@21, then hope Moreno or Brown is still there @28. If they somehow were able to land these players with the first 2 picks, then a WR with the 3rd(moving back up into the 2nd with some of those 12 picks), and I mean a WR with some size...maybe Robiskie(6'3/210lbs), or Barden(6'6/230lbs), we'll be the ones getting our popcorn ready because with the defense they already have, plus those skill players....Reid and Co. might need to build a case for some shiny new trophy's!!! Go EAGLES!

Eagles blow my balls....

April 1, 2009  10:02 PM ET

Your a ****, let me guess...your the pitcher, and Tono #omo is the catcher?

April 2, 2009  12:48 PM ET

lol hahaha good one phillyfan5... But if i wanted a comeback i would of wiped it off your **** chin... but nice try

April 3, 2009  06:23 AM ET

Can you say Sean Smith? At 6'4 214; this CB runs an impressive 4.43/40. Can you say jump ball Fitz? He had 9 INT/15 breakups in his last season....I'm sold.....

April 3, 2009  01:31 PM ET

Interesting prospect...for sure would match up well against taller WR's, good size and speed for a CB. Will he be there in the 3rd rd?
Westbrook and Moreno would be a lethal RB duo, having both on the field at the same time would be a match-up nightmare. Philly has to try to find a way to get Moreno. There is too much upside, and he fits this offense perfectly(a bigger and stronger version of Westy). Could be Westbrook's eventual successor.
I'm high on Pettigrew, But at #21, who brings the most value?
This kid is a stud RB, I hope we get him. RB brown would be a good runner up if Moreno is taken before 21.

April 3, 2009  03:00 PM ET

I know how you feel; but I have to give it to Pettigrew. A good 6'6 TE is hard to come by. A threat in the Red Zone. Then we have to see who is still on the board with our luck and Andy's way of thinking we might draft a QB..LOL
