NFL  > Carolina Panthers  > Peppers to Patriots for 2nd Rd pick.
March 16, 2009, 04:20 PM
Just saw this. It would be the 2nd pick in the 2nd round. I don't guess that would be to bad, but it is way less than what he is worth. I think we would be losing terribly in that deal.
March 16, 2009  04:28 PM ET

Since Peppers is due 1yr/16 million guaranteed, its not too bad. Teams don't want to overpay in draft picks when they still have to work out an extension when Peppers has all of the leverage. If you trade for him and can't work out a deal you would lose that compensation while getting 1 overpriced year out of him.

I can't stand the Patriots, but damn, what a well-run team.

March 16, 2009  04:39 PM ET

Is there a source for this?

I really hope this is not the best they can do. I have no desire to see peppers stay but I hope they can do better. As has been stated by several commenters before one of our big problems is our quaterback. I would love to see a Peppers for Cutler type deal and either throw Delhomme in or cut him. I guess if the Pats deal is the best we can do then so be it. We will enter next season hoping Richard Marshall can step up to be the second cornerback, see if Jake has another okay but nothing special year and hope we get luck in the draft to replace Peppers with whomever we can get at the 34th pick. Well if it all faails then at least we can look forward to the prospect of Bill Cower taking charge in 2010 when Fox gets the boot.

NFL.com and ESPN.com

Unless they can work out a deal for three or more years, it won't happen. The Pats don't have $16 mil to spend on one guy. If Peppers wants to come to NE, he can work any deal he wants after [really before] the trade.

We shall have to wait to see what the terms are, but if he comes that dear, he is not worth more than the #34 pick.

I still have my doubts, but at 29, he is worth five years more than Vrabel was. Now, can he handle the complexity of the NE 3-4? It remains to be seen.

March 16, 2009  06:54 PM ET

From ESPN.com (can I do that?):

Peppers, a defensive end for Carolina, has declared his desire to play outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense. With New England, he would have the chance to perform on one of the best.

The draft pick would be the one the Patriots obtained from the Kansas City Chiefs in the trade that sent last year's starting quarterback Matt Cassel and heart-and-soul linebacker Mike Vrabel to the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Patriots also have added running back Fred Taylor, receivers Joey Galloway and Greg Lewis, tight end Chris Baker and cornerbacks Leigh Bodden and Shawn Springs.

Is all that legal?

These guys went 11-5 last year without Tom Brady, who's on his way back.

How good are the Patriots looking to you now?

March 16, 2009  06:59 PM ET

NFL.com reports a delay in the trade, which may be ...to work out the deal? I still have my doubts.

first jenkins for a 2nd round pick now peppers **** is our team that poorly run that we can do no better then that ?? im gonna be so upset if this happens so upset

March 16, 2009  10:16 PM ET

it will get done. its a great trade for both teams. basically the pats trade cassel and vrabal for peppers, and charlotte gets an early 2nd round pick and 16 million in salary to spend on multiple players, plus charlotte wont run into pep unless both teams make the super bowl, which would mean that it was better than great for both teams.

and fyi: jake isnt going anywhere. i worked at the stadium. jake is exactly the player fox and management wants. he fits the team perfectly, and his image is just what the team wants. its just the way it is for another 2 years or so.

March 16, 2009  10:21 PM ET

this, i can not and will not beleive.

March 16, 2009  10:37 PM ET

I do. About Jake, that is. About Julius, I have my doubts.

March 17, 2009  08:31 AM ET

I can't believe what i'm reading a 2nd round pick are you kidding me? Peppers is either one or the best end in the game a 2nd round pick. Minnesota got a 1st for Jarred Allen and a 3rd.Nothing wrong with Allen but when teams play the Panthers there game plain is to just stop Peppers. That trade would be bad for football. They need at least same value when Jared Allen traded or at least Cutler for Peppers deal.Denver does play a 3-4. Be smart Panthers you need a qb bad if you want to contend for years to come you need to look that direction.

March 17, 2009  12:01 PM ET

Everyone keeps calling for a QB for Peppers trade that would leave us without any form of serviceable DE. While Delhomme lost a lot of standing with me in the last game (I was on the 35 yrd line, 4th row. glad I shelled out the $$$ for those seats) we need some form of pass rushing end. Johnson from Georgia Tech will be there at 34, and would be a great pick up that late, but i agree that we should get more for Peppers than that. At least work some second pick into the trade or find someone to add depth to our roster.

March 17, 2009  12:09 PM ET

Hey chuck! I posted that awhile ago. Carolina will and better squash that. Thats a bull crap worthless trade!

I am a Steelers fan and I can honestly say I'm happy that the Patriots have started going after big names the past few years. The Patriots were winning their Super Bowls when most of their core players were brought up by the Patriots and they had unbelievable team chemistry to go along with their system (like how the Steelers do it). All of the sudden they are starting to go the route of such teams as the Redskins and Cowboys and although they have had one of the most star studded teams in the NFL the past few years, they have no championships to show for it. I don't think trying to buy championships is the best way to go in the NFL.

Right now, the Boston Globe is reporting that the negotiations are alive with Peppers and NWE, but due to rules in the CBA, the Panthers aren't allowed to discuss the deal. But, another source has reported that the Panthers have asked the NFL for permission to discuss the trade, and it could be done by the Spring Meetings, starting March 22.Right now it seems you are right, that paperwork and number crunching is what stands in the way. I think the Pats want to sign him to a 5 year/ $80M deal, but not much guaranteed the first year or 2, allowing them to sign their draft picks as well. Either way, this deal will be done. Peppers wants to come to NWE, the Panthers owner knows that, and the 2nd pick in the 2nd round is a great return. I guess all of the "NWE will miss Pioli" talk ius pretty dumb now, isn't it? What an amazing off season they are having.

How is the second pick in the second round a great pick? Its a damn robbery!

Let's see. Carolina wants to move Peppers so they don't have to pay a ton of guaranteed money, crippling their growth. By getting the 2nd pick in round 2, they get 1st round talent, for 1/4 the cost. A 1st rounder is going to cost a lot of guaranteed money. It is a business people. It isn't fantasy football. The object of the NFL is to:A) Make moneyB) Put a competitive team on the field so...C) They can sell tix and make more money.

Apparently you don't know business then. You use the franchise tag for the porpuse of obtaining a first round choice. Peppers should be given up for nothing less, and to go to New England is a SLAP in the face to Panthers fans.

March 17, 2009  01:50 PM ET

But they would have to take Jake as well so we could get a real QB.

March 17, 2009  02:47 PM ET

Well thank god carolina denyed that rumor that they are in talks with NE. I really hope they don't go with that deal that is garbage.
