NFL  > New York Giants  > Kevin Gilbrde Must go as O.C.
March 17, 2009, 03:41 PM
While everyone is talking about Plaxico, Boldin and trades, the reality is nobody is mentioning Kevin Gilbride's horrid playcalling... The team has no consistncy on offense other than the running game, and goes on these long stretches that make you wonder what's going on....

Last year in Cleveland, they got manhandled, and then when they were operating in the no-huddle they moved the ball, then got to the 20 and started huddling up again, then Manning threw a pick!

In the playoffs against the Eagles he should have just let Jacobs pound the ball, but decided to get cute with a QB sneak and a direct snap to Derrick Ward, among other plays that cst the Giants the game.

The defense bailed the team out routinely last year, and the Giants won the Super Bowl in spit of the offense, and only due to the defense manhandling Brady. Ever wonder why this guy who has been in so many playoff games never one the big one until he got their with the Giants?

Harsh!!! But perhaps true. Nothing realy exciting about the giants offence until Eli is in the no huddel.( Broncos win a few years ago at the last minute, Eagles overtime rally down by 17, cowboy game in the playoffs last year, and of course the superbowl drive) THis tells me maybe eli is a better quaterback then we realize. After all if it was the play calling and not eli hes probably the only quaterback not to Call his O.C on it because thats not elis style. I mean its not like they have not had talent. ELi plex toomer tiki shockey and Only had one year they one a playoff game. Granted it resulted in a superbowl win and i would not trade that for anything but I think it was more like you said. A product of a great team and a great D.C in spags. I have a lot of respect for spags because it took an exceptional D.F to overcome our o.f. Last year he just did needed just a tad bit more help from the offence becasue of no Osi and look how it resulted. 23-11. The D did their job. I dont know if a QB that manufactured 9 offence of points in a playoff game should be in the 100 million dollar club. I do know we will never know if he is or not because his O.C shot himself in the foot more then plex ever did. I do think however not even k.g could screw up this year. jerry R. simply put us in a position that he cant. 25 points should win 90 percent of our games this year. Two outa three aint bad

There is some truth to that...but the browns game was only one loss in their first 9 games. The giants were putting up points in every other game. Not too many OCs can say that.

I will say, though, that I am not a big fan of running stretch plays for Brandon Jacobs consistently...that's when I get a little annoyed with the playcalling.

Your absolutely right, the way he used Jacobs in the final game was pitiful. He is not an offense corrdinator, in the purest sense, he's a guy that got lucky and somehow managed to make a few right calls to win a Super Bowl.

Finally!!! I hear someone else saying what I have been since the first quarter of that Horrid display against the Eagles in the post season.
The Giants strong point on offense was Jacobs pounding the ball, even in the win over the Steelers when they had 60, or so, total yards rushing. Against the Eagles jacobs averaged just under 5 yards a carry and with no Plax they needed to pound him more to set the tone. In 07' every post season game had a Statement run by Jacobs, in 08 no attempt was made.
Instead of playing to the Giants strength, Gilbride went straight to the pass. Just what the Eagles wanted.
In the end I do belive the Giants had the team to go all the way and playcalling quickly removed them from the playoffs.

no doubt the giants fell flat against the eagles in the playoffs, but they were missing there best offenseive threat. The dude just helped us win a superbowl. I think its a liitle harsh to say lets fire the guy when we had a bunch of 3rd WR's out there and we are one year removed from the superbowl.

relax

The Giants are notorious for having stagnant offenses. They have never been known for their ability to throw the ball. They have been known for strong defenses and a power running game. Eli is probably the most true passing QB they have had in their history. They need to keep Gilbride for now as replacing him will set the offense back immediately, but they need to groom someone from the college ranks or somewhere, as the Giants like to build their coaches within. Their QB coach, Sean Palmer is not the answer. The offensive quality guy Sean Ryan played DB and OLB in his college days. Gilbride and Palmer have done a good job in developing Eli, but that's where their coaching potential stops. Until Jerry Reese uses his gift for finding talent on the offensive coaching staff, Giants will remain a running team that has to rely on their defense to keep them in the game and then get Eli or the running game to win it. Just an opinion.

If I remember correctly, the year the Giants won the SuperBowl was the year that Gilbride was relieved of his play calling duties with two games left and the OC position was taken over by Coughlin. I hoped he'd be released but somehow he was back last year.

March 30, 2009  08:59 PM ET

Ever wonder why defensive coordinator Buddy Ryan punched Gilbride on the sidelines? Too much pressure on the defense again and again and again. Eli plays better when he does'nt have to think and Gilbride thinks too much!!

March 31, 2009  02:41 PM ET

Agree, Gilbride dose not know how to run an offense too fit the personal he has. He much too repetitive especially in the red zone.

I truly believe that Eli is a better QB than anyone realizes because of the horrid play calling by Gilbride. When Eli is in the two-minute drill he's a different man! Sure, Gilbride, like any OC, gets luck once in a while and has a play or two that can be traced back to him that worked brilliantly. Anyone of us can get lucky calling an NFL play too. Doesn't mean we should be the OC. It was painfully clear this year that Gilbride needs the best running game in the NFL and a 6'5" receiver to be affective. Take away either of those things and the Giants offense sputters painfully. Thank God their defense is going to be #1 this year.

This guy makes you nostalgic for Rich Kotite.

I know that was below the belt but life is cruel.
