NFL  > Philadelphia Eagles  > Eagles should do this!
March 20, 2009, 11:28 PM
If history repeats itself, then turn back to the 04 season when we got T.O. and Jevon Kearse. = superbowl!
Philly has a 21 and a 28 in the first. 12 overall.
Give up 21 and a 3rd for Boldin, give up 28 and a 2nd for Peppers! Carolina told the Pats 34th pick was not good enough. They could still wheel and deal to package picks to get back into the 2nd and take the best available RB, or TE. They drafted 10 players last year and in no way shape or form can they draft all 12 this year...there isnt the roster space.
But dealing for Boldin and Peppers would make them day 1 starters and impact players. Big impact players. They have the 12 picks(2 1st rounders) and next years to manipulate, and $40 mill under the cap! They are in perfect position to make a history altering draft day trade that would make this team scary.
Boldin and Jackson on the outside.
Cole and Peppers on the outside.
Think outside the box this year and replicate what you didi in 04 that worked....almost. Only 3 points shy of the trophy!

I am not big on not having a #1 or #2 draft pick but those two trades would make the Eagles legit contenders. The only problem is that the "braintrust" is way tooooooo cheap!!! But I like your thinking outside the box. Finally a fellow fan who has an idea which could help this team get back to the top!! All of you boys who are saying get Holt or Harrison are seeing the Holt and Harrison of years gone bye. BOTH ARE DONE!!!!

Please understand that is way better thinking then most fanz; but we don't have to give up everything this year. I'm not sold on our corners. We still have individuals that are not proven yet. RB's are easy to come by now a days and giving up our high picks is just crazy. Each player in the NFL is a play away from getting hurt. I would give a 2 (next year) and 4 for boldin. Peppers 3 (next year) and a 5; but Peppers makes no sense. We have proven DEs...I would rather trade for TE Gonzalez (KC)...With the addition of Boldin, Gonzalez, and Weaver..SB title is ours or Mr. Andy is gone

March 21, 2009  01:07 PM ET

Not that crazy, think about it.
Last year they played Dawk a lot inside the box due to the falloff of his coverage skills.
They were using 3 safety packages to get Demps on the field, who has coverage skills, with Mikell back there with him. Dawk was used helping stop the run and blitzing most of the time.
Our corners are Sheldon, Assante, and Hanson. Pretty good trio, then adding in the 2 Q's, and the pick-up of Jones was solid. He can play the run and pass. Also, dont forget about Jack Ikegwuonu...who is more than a year removed from his injury and ready to play. He was touted as a potential first round corner going into the draft before his injury. Why would Andy draft a player who was immediately going to be put on IR? There was no pressing need at the time with Lito still here, Plus our current corners. If Andy's gamble was right taking Jack, we should be set at corner. Jack has been working out all offseason and says he is ready to play.

March 21, 2009  01:17 PM ET

As far as DE, Cole is a demon who has been getting doubled and chipped the last few years and is still highly productive. We need that force on the other side that commands the same respect.
Peppers would immediately offer that, then some. No waiting for a rookie to develop if they should take one high in the draft. Just plug and play. Strike while the iron is hot I say! If they have put themselves into to this envious position of having a young and talented team(average age 27)that plays in the toughest division in the NFL, and they are consistently a threat year in and out to make playoff runs, not to mention all the cap space, They should make a BOLD and strategic move to regain the dominance they once had a few years ago.
The Giants and Redskins made improvements, we cant afford to be second best in the division.

So your not sold on the Eagles corners who yielded the 3rd best Pass Defense in the NFL last season? In fact, the only problem with the pass defense last year was that the Eagles would Occasionally get beat on the deep ball because Dawkins got ruined in pass coverage.

Arizona would never give up Boldin for a 2nd and 4th round pick especially when they've already been offered better. Peppers can't be traded untill he re-signs with the Panters, and at the moment he stands to eat up nearly $17million off the cap this year alone. Gonzalez would be a nice addition but with all the recent additions in KC I don't think they're willing to trade away a huge part of their potential offensive potency.

I would love to see them go after Shaun Rogers who is holding out of the Browns camps, and has expressed his desire to be traded. He would clog up the middle, help the Eagle's pass rush by occupying 2 defenders nearly at all times, and really help the run defense by clogging up those holes up the middle.

All signs are pointing to a big draft-day trade. Possible targets include Anquan Boldin, Jason Peters, Braylon Edwards (Edwards being the most unlikely), or move up to acquire one of the premiere Offensive Tackles available in the Draft.

March 21, 2009  09:07 PM ET

I totally agree with Know it all. They will move up to acquire a premiere OT. Then they will let the rest fall into place -- whether it be by trade or thru the draft.

March 21, 2009  10:14 PM ET

evrything you have said makes sence lets hope the eagles pull the trigger and make a big move. i still think that they can even bring in either holt or harrison to mentor the young jackson so that boldin can focus on learning the west coast offence that why it makes more sence to bring in holt to help them all along and he is a team guy

March 21, 2009  10:18 PM ET

Your Plan would be great...I hope the Eagles pull the trigger on such a big move. I still think they can bring in Holt to compliment the group and mentor the young jackson so that boldin can concentrate on learning the west coast offence. Would not cost them much cash and zero draft picts

Trading draft picks isn't thinking out of the Box after signing good players thats next on the list for a quick attempt at improving. Draft an OT and a big DT or Safety. Improve this team through the draft because Mcnabb will either recognize the team trying to fill its weaknesses and stay or he'll split anyway. If they want a receiver just sign Holt for a couple of years and make Mcnabb happy, dont mortgage the future.

March 21, 2009  10:27 PM ET

I agree with Phillyfan5 Totally. Imagine McNabb with the two speedy wideouts on the outside (something he has never had) with Curtis and the Tight End over the middle and then they bring in Avant on third down if they ever get to third down and don't forget about Westbrook and a high draft pick running back. This would make the Eagles offense literally unstoppable. McNabb would have a field day every game. Then on Defense with Cole and Peppers on the Outside who are they going to double team. With the Pressure they are going to present even mediocre corners would look like pro bowlers and the Eagles corners are not mediocre. It would be a disaster for any opposing offense. Barring any injury issues I think this would be NO QUESTION the best team in the NFL. For all you guys who think the eagles should go OL take a look at the roster a see the list of draft picks of OL that Andy has been stock piling over the last 5 years. This is Eagle time lets go after it and make it happen for once.

March 22, 2009  12:43 PM ET

Not sure about the Rogers deal, he is built and best suited for a 3-4 scheme, but I see what your thinking. Our rotation at DT is solid with Bunk, Patt, and Laws. Help for Cole would be a blessing, and if the possibility were to present itself, They should go after it(Peppers). Your right though...it would cost $$$ but it's not impossible.
As far as bringing in Holt, I disagree. He is an aging player that would eat up a roster spot. Jackson got all the tutoring he needed with the best to play the game in Jerry Rice. Jerry took Jackson under his wing, became friends, and worked extensively on how to be a professional, and how to play the game and his route running. 912 on 62 catches in a west coast offense his rookie year, plus returning punts speaks volumes of the kids potential. All eyes were on him and he didn't disappoint. He has that season under his belt...as well as a taste for winning playoff games and making it to the championship game where he caught a 60 yard TD bomb. He'll be just fine!

March 22, 2009  12:58 PM ET

Pursuing Boldin aggressively is what Arizona is going to want. He still has 2 yrs on his deal and they are not just going to give him up. It seems like if they chose...Philly could be in the drivers seat to acquire his services. The Giants riding shotgun. Lets hope we get him if he does leave Arizona though...it would be a nightmare playing the Giants x2 a yr with the roster the already have.

March 22, 2009  10:38 PM ET

Another move that just opened up the playbook a whole chapter. Finally a "true" fullback.
It's only a one year deal, but lets hope he gets really involved this season and signs long term. Weaver can flat out play. Great blocker, great hands, a powerful runner, and can pass protect. This kid was coveted by more than a few teams for his versatility, and rightfully so. He can take it inside on short yardage downs or just give Westy a breather. He has averaged more than 4 yards per carry in his career and can catch and run. We have been waiting for this type of FB for some time, the west coast offense does utilize the FB as more than just a lead blocker...we can breath a little easier now going into the season with a fullback of this caliber instead of a converted DT. Not to slight Klecko, he did an admirable job...be he doesnt even come close to the skills Weaver possesses. Good pick-up, one less wasted draft pick!

March 22, 2009  11:13 PM ET

Why Peppers? He wants to play in a 3-4. If he was okay w/ a 4-3, he would have signed his franchise tender (17 MILLION) by now and would stay in Carolina, his hometown team.

March 22, 2009  11:47 PM ET

Seagulls need a new qb...when will people realize McDudd will never get it done?

March 23, 2009  07:00 AM ET

Peppers wants out of Carolina, yes he did say a 3-4 is preferable...but if he had a choice to play in a 3-4 in Cleveland, or a 4-3 in Philly, that's a no brainer. Plus Philly has the leverage to pull off such a trade, not many teams are in the position of the Eagles with 12 picks(2 in the 1st rd)and $40 mill under the cap.
Poundcake obviously is in denial about Tono Romo...he cant win a playoff game to save his life, not to mention the drama of collapsing in the shower after that 44-6 beat down. Maybe he needs to go on the view and get a few hugs. Romo wishes his resume looked like McNabbs, the list is too long to mention all of his accolades. The only thing he's missing is a ring. When Philly extends his contract it will be the saddest day of your life...because you will have to sit through more beat downs from McNabb, a quarterback Romo wishes he could be, and one Dallas wishes they had! Sucks to be a Cowboys fan. LOL!

March 23, 2009  11:45 PM ET

Curious...I hear trade rumors involving LT Jason Peters from Buffalo.
My question, if there is any interest and validity to Philly possibly making a trade offer is why?
This guy said he wants to be paid among the top linemen in the league...is he worth it?
He made the pro bowl last year and I never heard of him until the story of the money he is demanding. Is he worthy of giving up a 21 or 28 in the 1st, then paying him a kings ransom?

March 24, 2009  05:18 PM ET

Phillyfan5...Honestly how much work do you think we need on our team before we can become a true contender for the SB? Right now with our roster I don't see it happening. I mean on O by it's self we need at least 3...OT, RB, TE...We can argue all day about the corner situation...U said Jack is ready. Yes, he does look like a beast. Some people can't adjust to the league. Talk is cheap.

March 24, 2009  07:54 PM ET

Honestly...not a lot of work, just some tweaks. I am not presuming Jack to be superstar, just keeping in mind the thought process that went into taking him with an IR type injury. Andy and Heckert saw a 1st rd, early 2nd rd talent and took him hoping he can regain his pre-injury form.
Like I said, If he pans out...they will have some depth there in the secondary.
We do need depth at key positions and you hit on two of them in RB, and TE.
If they stand pat at 21, and 28, they could walk away with great depth at those 2 positions(for example-Pettigrew, or Nelson at TE. Moreno, Brown, or McCoy at RB.) Those would be great pick-ups if they swing for the fences, then take WR Robiskie in the 2nd.
That would be an impressive first day draft, in my eyes and a lot of us fans...will that happen?
Andy could move up to get OT Munroe and my scenerio goes out the window.
I began this article feeling like pursuing Boldin, and Peppers due the high impact they would have and create a ripple effect on the rest of the team.
If the O added Boldin, it would really open everything up and they could score lots of points early and make defenses one dimensional.
If the defense added Peppers, another ripple effect would be sacks, immense pressure, and turnovers...thus getting the ball back and scoring more points, or chewing up the clock and finishing teams off instead of letting them hang around. I dont enjoy getting beat by field goals, they need to get that killer instinct and swagger back. I believe they are contenders now, an aggresive draft at skill positions would really balance this team out if the trades should fall through.

March 24, 2009  08:05 PM ET

They don't need to add a Wide Receiver in the draft.
