NFL  > Dallas Cowboys  > Jerry Jones Is Better Than Your GM
March 23, 2009, 11:30 AM
People think it is easy to hate hate hate on Jerry Jones but the fact is he has the hardware to prove otherwise. His approach to being GM isnt one many would agree with but they dont own the team either. Jerry can afford to take big risks that other GMs would be scared to take. Sometimes the risks dont work out (Quincy Carter) and sometimes they pay off in Superbowl Rings (Jimmy Johnson).

You cant deny that the Cowboys have talent to get it done either. They are one of the most talent laden teams in the NFL on offense and defense.

Dont be too quick to judge how well the Cowboys will play next year either. This past year was full of injuries and Terrell Owens drama. With a healthy Marion Barber and Felix Jones, the Boys will be back on Top of the East this coming season.

Cant wait for Eagles fans to cry about this one! But watch out you iggle fans, Jerry's Pimp Hand is Strooooong

I hope the Lion's can trade with them more often. Roy for a the 20th pick and another late rounder = win for the Lions. Kitna for a starting cornerback (or at least a better one than they had last year). More trades like that, and the Lion's might actually be able to look at a positive record in the next decade.

Yes the Cowboys have talent but Jerry is the one making all the decisions on how to use it. For instance Jerry has already stated in the media, 3 months prior to training camp, that Felix Jones will start at running back. As long as Jerry tinkers with EVERYTHING I don't think the Cowboys will be able to realize their potential. He reminds me of the countless ex-bosses I've had that couldn't delegate and ultimately failed.

Anyone who says Cowboys dont have the talent to win it all are complete ignorant fools..nothing more. Cowboys need to get there stuff together or its just do or die.

It wont be a fluke win like the Giants tho.

March 23, 2009  01:39 PM ET

A starting corner who is slower than most safties is not what I would call a starting corner, but he is an upgrade for your team no doubt. Just like having Kitna as a backup QB is an upgrade for ours.

When you are 3 deep at corner, like Dallas is with Newman, Jenkins and Scandrick, dumping an aging Henry is no big deal.

Roy Williams for the 20th pick blows away any man that could or will be taken at that spot in the draft, more noticeably the wideouts.

We could have given you the #1 pick in the draft and your front office will figure out a way to screw it up...

It is not about the pick you are getting but what you do with it my friend.

At this point, both sides are happy and when Roy pops for over 1000yds and 8+ scores, we will say we told you so.

The poster of this article is spot on though...

JJ gets a real hard time for being the GM, but he has made some good and bad moves over the years....my guess is that can be said for any GM in the league.

March 23, 2009  01:55 PM ET

Well, since the Lions were going to cut Kitna anyway...anything is better than nothing.

The jury is out on the current management group. We'll have to see what they do in the next couple of years. Trading an over priced and under talented NT for a 5 time Pro-bowler in a position we needed filled, is showing signs of good things to come.

The most dominant defensive line in the league wasn't a fluke, ask Tom Brady.

No but David Tyree's catch was a fluke.

Just ask David Tyree...

Don't forget the miracle that was Eli breaking free to even be able to throw that pass.

The Cowboys would be more than happy to have a "fluke" Super Bowl win.....heck they would probably love to start at a "fluke" playoff win.

We've got the "fluke" owner already.

The Cowpokes AKA America's Team will win the East, the NFC and the Superbowl next year and prob the year after that

March 23, 2009  04:55 PM ET

Why does everybody call it a "fluke" if either their team or the team that the media hypes up as the favorite doesn't win? Whiners can find a reason to call ANY game a fluke. Fluke plays, bad calls and bounces are all part of the game. As a matter of fact, look at the shape of a football. The game is designed to have "fluke" plays. The best team is the one who can overcome bad calls and bounces and take advantage of calls that go their way and good bounces.

I don't hate Jerry Jones....I disagree with him a lot of the time tho. His risks have left a lot more to be desired than has worked. 13 years and counting since Johnson. I agree with what you say however, but we will never know what a real GM could have done for this team the past 20 years. We could have had a few more SBs, or we could have had a Matt Millen type, too. We'll never know.

We do need to get serious about winning tho........Although I respect the Steelers and their fans, we need to catch back up with them in SB wins, and eventually go past them.......*grinning*.....and continue......no more 5-11 seasons.

that's a tough one to call. i think jerry is a great owner. he is relentless in getting talent and marketing his team. he sets the bar pretty high as an owener. as a GM.... that's where it gets complicated. many believe he is way too involved in this role and i tend to agree. but when you own the team, you can do what you want. i'm a cowboys fan forever and i hope jerry has dallas on the right track next yr.

Call it a fluke win all you like, but the Giants managed to win with the talent they had.

I agree with you DallasFan77. I am new to FanNation but I have noticed a disturbing trend in Free Pound Cake postings. He has over 3000 and I have yet to see him write anything positive. Instead of discussing sports and having fun while doing so he seems to attack anyone who disagrees with his views. Time for him to go.
