NFL  > New York Jets  > Please don't get Jay Cutler!
March 23, 2009, 06:40 PM
I will admit that Jay Cutler is a good QB. I'll even say he played well with teams knowing he will throw the ball. But for goodness sake, please don't trade for this guy. There's a reason the new management was looking to deal him out of town. And the problem was not his physical ability. Heres the hint. A QB needs to lead a team, and he is not a leader.

The second thing is this. The last time the Jets drafted a QB and started him regularly, that QB (Chad Pennington) took the team to the playoffs a few times. What ever happened to drafting someone, and giving them the opportunity to play? Before you could trade away your future in draft picks for some guy that had a good season?

I as a Jets fan would rather see players that the team drafted and developed and stuck with. When you trade and sign a bunch of free agents, I'm not watching the NY Jets play football anymore. I'm watching the mercenary unit that is playing for NY for the moment. Let's build through the draft and actually believe in the players we have. At least enough to give them a shot on the field, and not just as practice players. Free agency and trades should just be to add depth, or for cheaper players to fill positions or add flexability. No disrespect to Jay Cutler, but I do not want to see you in a Jets jersey. You wouldn't be a Jet. You'd just be Jay Cutler playing for my team.

The Jets need to win now not later, waiting for a draft pick to develop can sometimes take years. If they were willing to go through a couple of years of losing they would have let Kellen Clemens continue his development last year instead of picking up Brett.
I would like to see the Jets go after Brady Quinn but then you have the same problem because he hasn't started enough NFL games yet.

jay cutler is a great qb. However our offense is about the run and thomas jones (on hold out) is 31 our back up is leon washington who is not an every down back. We need to draft a RB to take jones spot ratlif i think has better potentcal; then clemens and can make the passes needed. we have a good line and multi backs would work wonders Knowson marano is the best back to hit the draft since reggie bush. the only execption is knowshon can run between the tackles ulike reggie. if not a running back then a safe pick like DE to replace ellis these are areas in which the young can learn from a pro bowl calibar position and be a starter a wr is only as good as the qb and if you ask me we have plenty of weapons to throw the ball. TE kellen WR cotchery RB washington stucky is showing som e good signs but we lost every game that thomas didnt get over 100 yards rushing. why because we manage the clock with the run and stop the other team with our defense. if we do get jay culter then dont trade our defensive players for him i hear they would be willing to put up harris LB and 1 2 picks. if we can get him give the picks maybe use the 2 for browns quarter back and give him and the 1st with next years 2nd to pick up culter and if you go that route then our 3 and 4th round picks need to be wr to maybe find a dimanod in the rough and 5 for dept h in the DT and 6 and 7 to look for a fresh pair of legs to run behind thomas jones like a Nate kmic http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KeKPixCSYbg

Cutler is an immature leader. He`s soft mentally and bruises too easy. He has a history of pouting that goes back to high school. Let`s build from within or the draft so that we can have a TEAM that is competitive year in year out.

I am absolutely positive that Jay Cutler has some growing up to do. However, I believe that the jets should make every effort towards making him their new quarterback. I don't consider trading a couple of draft picks in the upcoming draft for Cutler as "trading away the future". Anyone with football commonsense can see that a QB of Cutler's caliber isn't available everyday. So when an opportunity like this arises then any franchise with question marks at quarterback would be idiotic to not offer a deal. Additionally, Cutler is still young and in my opinion has another decade of good football left in him at the very least. Another opinion that I have is that I believe that my Jets become an instant Superbowl contender with the addition of Cutler. Coach Rex Ryan already has built an championship caliber defense that is going to be tough and hard hitting just like his units in Baltimore. With Cutler in the mix, the Jets will have a well balanced offensive attack that could be successful pounding the ball with Jones and Washington or with vertical passing down field with Cutler's cannon arm. It would be up to the opposing defenses to choose their poison. Although, I believe that even after the addition of Cutler, another WR is needed to team up with Cotchery. WR's Stuckey and Clowney will make solid 3rd and 4th options when the Jets spread out the offense, but nothing more. I would actually like to see them go after Torry Holt or Marvin Harrison. Mike Tannenbaum and Woody Johnson please go get us that all so elusive franchise quarterback.

I understand your points about Cutler. He is immature, and he definitely will need some thicker skin if he was to be the QB for the Jets.

However, how could you pass up the opportunity to get a 25 year old franchise QB? I never liked the D'Brickashaw Ferguson selection in that draft and honestly believed Cutler, Leinart, or Young (if he was available at 4 but he wasn't due to Tennessee taking him at 3) would have been the better selection.

Also I got to agree with you all that running back and receiver are positions the Jets need to target in the Draft. Thomas Jones has put in some good workmanlike seasons but at 31 you have to wonder about his durability. Also you have to wonder if Leon Washington could handle the carries if something happens to Thomas.

Also, the Jets need someone to play alongside Cotchery. Heyward-Bey a guy with speed and height at 6'2" wouldn't be a bad choice at 17.

i would love jay cutler, but not at the expense of our entire future. im willing to trade this years first round, and even next years first round, but def. no defensive players along with it. i would be fine with ratliff at quaterback, drafting either moreno or a guy like harvin, who can become an instant playmaker on offense. we also have to remember that when clemens played a few years ago, he didnt have the same offensive line we have now. the jets offensive line is a very strong line, and i think either clemens or ratliff could get the job done, especially with running back tandem that we have now.

all of your points are well taken. if our coaching staff can get him to see the BIG picture i`m all for having a qb with his talent.

Cutler is a very good QB but he would not be a good fit with a team solidifying and stabilizing itself and making itself an up and coming powerhouse. The J-E-T-S play as a T-E-A-M not as Cutler does, for the records and his own benefit.
