NFL  > Philadelphia Eagles  > Eagles have options, lots of them!
March 26, 2009, 08:59 PM
At the owners meeting, Tom Heckert(general manager) was asked about the flexibility they have with 12 picks, 2 being 1st rounders. His reply was they feel like they can do just about anything they want. WOW.
Besides all the trade rumors(Jason Peters, Boldin, Edwards)...we wont know till draft day, they could pull any one of those off.
See, the Eagles are in a great situation...not only is it sweet to have 12 picks(21,28 in the 1st) but they have $40 mill under the cap as well. They could trade for anyone, and pay anyone. Heckert also commented on other teams managers eager to trade down because with a high draft pick comes a big price tag. Many teams simply dont have the money under the cap to sign these players...for them trading down and getting more picks later on(especially if they have lots of holes to fill) makes more sense. Heckert even planted the seed of moving up into the top 5 or 10, and said if they chose 1 would not be impossible. I know they had OT Monroe in for a visit, and he is the 2nd best tackle in this draft. Could they make a play for OT Jason Smith? He is the total package and could bookend this line with Stacy Andrews for the next decade.
What are these sneaky birds up to?
March 27, 2009  12:32 AM ET

I hope they shore up the O-Line and get some big ticket Defensive Player, either at safety or LB. Their offense is good but it lacks a red zone presence. One man can fix it Tony Gonzalez. I do not think Anquan Boldin is as good as he thinks he is and he is definetley not what McNabb needs. McNabb likes to spread the ball around and loves the deep ball to WR. Boldin wants the ball a lot and loves to YAC AND Yak.

GO EAGLES!!!

NO HATERZ ALLOWED

March 27, 2009  01:18 AM ET

Yea..tony g would be good on the field for yall

March 27, 2009  11:17 AM ET

I continue to bring up TE cause he is a great player. I was hype over Boldin earlier; but I'm starting to thing it's a bad idea. I has no speed to seperate from the CBs. Edwards would be a better fit. Gonzalez, Edwards, and a few other addition from the draft will make us a SB team...
I hate waiting so damn long. Base ball is almost a year long sport. MAN

March 27, 2009  11:33 AM ET

I'm not trying to be a "hater" but I don't think the Eagles would be a super bowl team with the addition of Gonzalez and Edwards. They are in rebuilding mode imo. I think it is going to be a couple of years before they start having success again

March 27, 2009  02:00 PM ET

WOW....So Fly...The core of the team is still there. The only lost I can say we had was Dawkins and that was mentally. he is going to be a hard pieve to replace. OT...Andrews...we have people on the roster to fill in but still waiting to address the other spot. TE face it L.J. has been in and out of rotation. With Gonzalez & Edwards-how do you not see it. Be specific, please do

March 27, 2009  02:49 PM ET

I honestly have not seen cleveland play enough to judge Edwards however i think the Eagles need to improve their D so it becomes dominant. With No Dawkins, their is no intimadation factor on D, they can make a run at Brooks maybe or one of the older defensive players out there and do what NE does. I know Trent is a freak, and the DTs are developing quite nicely. Asante + Brown are gr8 CBs but there is no one in the linebacking core who anyone would be intimadated by them.

March 27, 2009  08:27 PM ET

So fly, too bad you are so wrong. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and that's fine.
But you are wrong about "rebuilding mode". Andy is a tweaker, rebuilding is something you do if you are the Detroit Lions, or the Raiders, Rams, Bengals. Reid is analytical, a creature of habit so to say. He adds players here through free agency, trades up,down, out, or for future draft picks, and builds and keeps his teams strong primarily through the draft and sprinkles them in with just the right amount of veterans. Since Reid turned this team from 5-11 to 11-5, the Eagles have done a 180 and become a force. The core of this team is srong. They still have veteran leadership and young players ascending into leadership roles. Not to mention the upcoming draft in which they have 12 overall picks and two 1st rounders.
A changing of the guard, a passing of the torch...call it what you will, but dont call it rebuilding!

March 27, 2009  10:54 PM ET

Actually, I'd probably agree a little with So Fly and phillyfan5. This team isn't in rebuilding mode.... yet. But in 2-3 seasons, this team as it is currently built is going to be possibly in REAL trouble. McNabb is heading into his mid 30's, and westbrook is already looking at the big 30 year old mark. With no real promising players to replace either one, and still only one real prospect in Deshaun Jackson at WR... the offense is looking anywhere from aged, to mediocre.

Defensively, they looked good last year. But they need to solidify their safeties, and figure out if their trio of linebackers are ready to improve or just be solid everyday players. I'm not saying this team is going down, but if probowl players are on this team... the time is NOW to stand up and show it.

March 29, 2009  11:36 AM ET

As usual, the Eagles need another weapon on offence and they could still contend for a season or two before rebuilding becomes necessary. They have historically had lots of cap space, but don't use up anywhere close to it. I'd like to see them get a #1 type WR and another RB to be backup. They have the picks and the cap space, but how many times have Eagles fans heard that one over the years? Let's see them finally do something with it!!

March 29, 2009  08:04 PM ET

Be patient and optimistic, If I am wrong...I will be the first one to admit it.
I have reviewed the roster, and with the exceptions of a few positions were depth is needed, this is a fairly young football team. McNabb barring injury can easily play another 4-5 years.
Westbrook will be fine with what is expected to be a RB taken in the draft (early)to help lighten the load, along with Weaver taking some reps. Sheldon Brown is nearing 30 and he only gave up 1 TD all year which came in the Champ. game against Larry Fitz. Not too bad.
Rebuilding is not the answer, a strong draft, maybe a trade or two, and you will see a very strong and competitive team take the field in 09.

March 29, 2009  11:24 PM ET

Ya'll need another safety, linebacker and lineman...hurting on defense

March 30, 2009  10:12 AM ET

One of their options would be to pack up shop and move cities, I'd probably root for them if they did.

March 31, 2009  09:45 PM ET

They are fine where they are. With the exception of not having a Lombardi, they are one of the finest franchises in the NFL. They draft well, usually are in good cap shape to pursue free agents, and more frequently than not, make playoff runs year in and year out. Jeff Lurie has done a fine job turning this organization around from the inside out. Players want to play here. There is optimism, and a winning attitude. Although they have been on the cusp a few times...they have fallen short the ultimate goal. The ring. Not by much though. I'd much rather be an EAGLES fan any day of the week, than a Bengals, or Lions, or Browns, or Texans, or Jaguars, or Chiefs, or Raiders, or Saints, or Cardinal fan...to name a few.
My point is...when you think it is bad, it can always be worse.

I'm hearing about a private workout for WR Heyward-Bay. Any truth to this???
That would be something, and my mind started to wonder this.
He is a physical specimen at 6'2 210lbs and ran the 40 in 4.30. You can be taught how to run routes, and block, but you cant teach size, and speed. Even if he put on 10 lbs of muscle, he'd still run in the 4.3's. D-Jack was already a polished route runner coming in, so the transition wasn't so bad. Having Heyward-Bay lift, learn the route tree, and learn some blocking sounds like one hell of a prospect to take a gamble on. Then unleash him next year opposite D-Jack.
Might be one of the better WR duo's in the league for years to come. Anyone agree?

Heyward-Bey is not going to be a good WR in the NFL.

There aren't any safeties worth taking in the first round, IMO, so with their first two picks the Eagles are in a good spot to get a WR. Nicks makes the most sense to me. Better take him before Baltimore does. In the second round, hope that either Chung, Moore, or Delmas slips that far and get your safety there.

April 8, 2009  06:42 AM ET

I'm about to blow your minds with these. Most teams wanna get out of the top 10 and lets face it all the teams in the top 10 are rebuilding. So lets look at this-what do you think about a trade to the rams for a 09' 2nd round pick, 09' 5th round, 10' 1st round picks......We really don't need all those 5th rounders...give away our 2nd ok we still have 3 picks in the 1st round. Would should be established enough next year not to wanna pick at all...just a thought

April 8, 2009  08:04 AM ET

The Rams want out of the #2 spot really bad because they do not want to spend #2 money and they have so many needs that they want multiple lower picks. If Detroit takes a QB at #1 I see the Eagles putting together a package of multiple picks ( #21, a 2nd & a 3rd ) to get Jason Smith. They would still be able to get a RB or WR at #28 or trade that pick for an experienced WR (Edwards). After all of Reid`s recent comments about Celek I do not think TE is a priority anymore!!!

No chance. The Eagles love to pick between 20 and 75. They value those picks very highly, because they get solid players at reasonable prices. This is what has made the Eagles one of the top 2 or 3 franchises over the last 10 years -- they take a long term, intelligent approach to the draft. #21 is an awesome spot to be drafting in this year's very deep draft -- you'll get a top 15 talent for a #21 price. Just sit tight at 21 and see what gem falls to you. Expect to take a safety at 28 or in the second round.

April 8, 2009  11:36 AM ET

mike_m235 I hope you are right. They shoud sit tight and I think Knowshon Moreno and Kenny Britt will be available at #21 & #28. THEY NEED STUDS WHO CAN SCORE!!! But for some reason Andy Reid always falls in love with lineman in the first round!!! What I wrote before is not what I want them to do, but what I see happening after listening to Dave Spadaro swearing that they are going to get a stud left tackle in the first round.
