Based on the last discussion about Guitar Hero songs, and how people learn about rock music because of a video game, ask yourself this:

What made you listen to rock music???

My dad grew up during the Beatles revolution (his favorite band) and has a massive classic rock CD collection. And as a kid, I'd always be in the back seat while my mom listened to the classic rock station. So I just sucked it in.

my dad and classic rock radio

I don't know exactly how or why...but I was 10, and I was just sitting there, bored out of my mind, turned on the radio to the rap station, hated it and said..."I am going to like rock"

yeah...

When I was young my dad listened to the Oldies station a lot. Then when I was 10-12 my dad introduced me to The Doors, and another friend of mine got into classic rock. And thus it began.

My parents were your typical old white people music fans; in love with Celine Dio and Barry Manilow. I naturally despised them and tried out things that everyone else liked -- the Backstreet Boys. From ages 10 to maybe 11 or 12, I was all about them and no one else. Then somehow the sheltered little boy that I was discovered the rock band Creed. I then proceeded to love them and only them for a few years, before finally looking around during middle and high school. I went into rap, becoming a white boy who wanted to be something else and sporting Jordan's. And then in high school I started to listen to a lot of mainstream rock, like Linkin Park and others.

And then in my Junior year, my eyes were finally opened. It started with AC/DC, the Beatles, Ozzy and then Metallica, and then it's cullminated into what I am now.

This is why I like this group so much, everyone on here credits their friends or parents for geting them into rock. I am no different. My parents were both into rock, with my dad more into stuff like Grand Funk Railroad, and my mom into the Beatles and Jimi Hendrix. My mom took me to see Jefferson Airplane/Starship when I was little, and she went with my brother to see Bruce Spingsteen, so for me, its my parents as well.

I wish I had a story about a friend or my parents that led me to my love of rock, but my friends thought they were mods, and my mom was all about Barry Manilow and Neil Diamond.

My rock history really begins with MTV, and yes kids, MTV used to stand for "Music Television" and as we all know, they have badly lost their way. Before I regress, at the time things like Journey, Twisted Sister and Quiet Riot were getting heavy airplay and I was digging it. From that, I searched around the radio dial and found KLOS (in Los Angeles) and discovered a whole world of beautiful music, from The Doors to AC/DC to Judas Priest.

And to steal a little from Thugmeister (because he said it so well), I was instantly hooked. From there - it was all things metal, rock, and then punk - until the day that I die (thank you Don McLean).

I'm not going to lie or sugar coat a nice story. I started listening to rock because it was cool. Honestly, when you're really young, what else matters? You don't want to get shunned by your fellow 4th/5th/6th/7th/8th/etc graders by aggrandizing showtunes everywhere you go, do you? No, so you listen to rock. Rock is good music, and from there one begins to love it. Of course, depending on the environment you're raised in, you very well could love showtunes, or 80s pop, or Baroque, or opera. For the little Catholic white boy, it was rock. And here I am.

Give it up for the Cathloic white boys, Cardsox! Especially the ones who rocked Pantera shirts underneath the uniform.

June 14, 2008  01:34 AM ET

Hah. I can't stand Pantera (sorrysorrysorry). I just don't see the "greatness" that makes them above the average metal band. The guitar riffs are stunningly simple when you listen to them, and the vocals/lyricism are...well...just listen to 'em.

"You don't want to get shunned by your fellow 4th/5th/6th/7th/8th/etc graders by aggrandizing showtunes everywhere you go, do you?"

You have experience, don't you?

June 15, 2008  01:04 AM ET

As a matter of fact, no. Hence....rock.
