NFL  > Philadelphia Eagles  > Eagles #1 Need Going Into the Draft is
April 10, 2009, 06:05 PM
Running Back. It may sound crazy but their biggest need this year is to get a running back for the future.

P.S. Take a look at this article for the top 3 team needs of the Eagles going into the 2009 NFL Draft:

MAN I HAVE TO GO WITH TE. U CAN GET A VET 4 A YEAR AND WORRY ABOUT THAT LATER....

April 11, 2009  06:56 AM ET

GET A STUD RB IN THE FIRST ROUND!!! But I have a new scenario after looking at all the expert mock drafts. With one week to go before the draft many EXPERTS have San Diego taking Knowshon Moreno to compliment LT. This would keep LT in the NFL longer. This leaves Darren Sproles (still has not signed his tender) as the odd man out. I do not know about any one else but I would trade #28 for Sproles in a heart beat. He would be Westbrook`s clone but only faster. This would allow Philly to use #21 on a WR or OL and their 2nd round pick on a TE. THE EAGLES HAVE THE MONEY TO SIGN SPROLES TO A LONG TERM CONTRACT!!!!

Left Tackle is the biggest need. And it's the first need Andy Reid will address.

Tra Thomas is gone. Who is going to block for the new runningback? Westbrook?

April 11, 2009  08:00 AM ET

Honestly what's more important...

First-string Left Tackle -or-
Second-string Runningback?

April 11, 2009  11:21 AM ET

YOU GUYS NEED TO REMEMBER----MOST OL WON'T START ON THIS TEAM FIRST YEAR...WE STILL COULD PULL TRADES OFF. I RATHER GET A YOUNG PROVEN VET. PETERS IS GOOD BUT IT WILL COST 2 MANY PICKS AND MONEY- SO LETS NIX THAT...LETS GET TE GONZ*....AT LEAST 2 YRS.....SPROLES..THIS TEAM WOULD BE A WINNER..........MAN...WE HAVE OL THAT CAN PLAY OT...DRAFT SOME LATE AS WELL.......

well your thread doesn't work.

we need a better offensive line if we want to run the ball. the old o line was built to protect mcnabb not to run. i say pick a stud o lineman and then running back...

April 11, 2009  01:27 PM ET

CEVYNBARRY -- That is fine with me. Trade #21, a 3rd & a 5th for Jason Peter. Trade #28 for Sproles then take the best TE available with our 2nd. NOW THAT WOULD BE ONE GREAT DRAFT!!!!

April 11, 2009  01:43 PM ET

DUDE IF WE CAN GET TE TONY GONZALEZ. I HONESTLY THINK WE CAN KEEP THE CORE OF WIDE RECIEVERS.....GET SPROLES......PETER WANTS TO MUCH....SKILLED POSITIONS DON'T GET PAID THAT MUCH.......I SAY GIVE UP 21 AND 5 RD FOR GONZALEZ-28 SPROLES....AND GET PROSPECTS THERE AFTER....I JUST WANNA WIN NOW.....

April 11, 2009  03:04 PM ET

Lets agree to disagree.
TE Gonzo is not pushing for a trade, in fact he said he liked the direction of the organization. (21,+5) is too much for Gonzo, how many really good years does he have left?
OT Jason Peters wants OT Jordon Gross $$. I'm not sold on him being among the best just yet.
He was good in 07, but 08 he was not.
RB Sproles is listed at 5'6, 181lbs. If Westbrook had to miss significant time with an injury, could Sproles be the man in that time span? Personally I dont think he can. Westbrook is at least 3 inch. taller and over 20lbs heavier. Sproles did not start any games in 08, and the only one he was productive in was vs. Denver.

Mr. Rogers has it right.
RB has got to be at the top of the Eagles board. You cannot deny the total package that Moreno brings with his size, power, and receiving skills. He is the best fit for Philly and could be the future starter for years to come barring injury. If he slides to 21 and Philly drafts him, that is great value. RB Brown, Wells, or Greene would be good runner ups if he is gone.
The conundrum is if TE Pettigrew is there at 21. He would help boost the run game immediately, and has great receiving skills as well, and a big red zone target. The dynamic of the run, and the TE pass attack underneath would set up play action beautifully for D-Jackson deep. And they still could grab at good RB with 28. I am torn between Moreno and Grew if they are both sitting there at 21. They have an opportunity with 21, 28, and 53 to come away with young, talented skill players to add depth, and starting potential to key positions...to an already young team.

TONY HAS 2 GOOD YRS..I JUST WANNA WIN NOW...I HEAR WHAT U R SAYING.....BUT WHAT UR SAYING IMPACTS THE FUTURE.........PROSPECTS......NO TIME IN THE NFL..PEOPLE GET AN EYE OPENER AT THE LEVEL....EXAMPLE: F. MITCHELL----LOL...I AGREE WITH U ABOUT THE PLAYERS..I JUST WANNA WIN..EVEN IF I HAVE 2 SELL MY SOUL TO THE MAN NEXT DOOR. I REFUSE 2 GO TO HELL...LOL

Everyone commenting here and every EAGLE FAN on other sites ALL have that one tone of desperation TO WIN NOW!!! Being a "PHILA FAN" my whole life some of my frustration was relieved by the Phillies but with this draft NOW IS THE TIME FOR AN EAGLES CHAMPIONSHIP!!! After all these years of being cheap Eagles management needs to open up the vault and PAY SKILLED POSITION PLAYERS to finally get the team over the top. McNabb`s window of opportunity is closing fast so GET HIM SOME STUDS!!! I agree that we need a RB in the first round, but it seems that Knowshon Moreno is moving up everybody`s draft board (TOP 15). I do not see them moving up to get him. If they move up it will be for OL, then they MUST get Brown at #28 and get a TE in the 2nd round. I don`t know who is coming to Philly, but for the first time I HAVE CONFIDENCE that management has a plan that will make this draft THE BEST DRAFT IN EAGLES HISTORY!!!!

April 12, 2009  10:45 AM ET

SCOUT.COM`s latest draft has the Eagles getting #21 Knowshon Moreno and #28 Brandon Pettigrew. If only it could come true!!!! Now let`s get greedy and get Brian Robiskie with our 2nd round pick. Hopefully Andy Reid believes in ALL those OL picks from the last few years and waits until the later rounds to draft more. If there is a God let SCOUT.com be right!!!!!

April 12, 2009  12:36 PM ET

There is flexibility at OT, not desperation. Todd Herr. can play left tackle, he played a little bit when Tra went down and did a good job. He played tackle through college. Shawn Andrews said he feels more comfortable on the left side (he made pro bowls on the right side)and also played tackle in college. There is no need to move up higher to grab an OT when you can stand pat and get a RB,TE,WR with the first 3 picks. There are plenty of lineman Andy can use as guards and get the job done. The first day of the draft could add monumental value for the now and the future if for once the skill positions are taken early and aggressively. From the 5th rd. down they can trade away for higher picks next year(the eagles have no compensation picks, therefore they can use any of their picks to trade out and move up higher next year, and break the bank on a stud OT) If Scout.com is right with RB Moreno, and TE Grew...i'm getting hammered! GO EAGLES!!!!

You don't have to use first round picks to get good runningbacks.

Look at how Earth, Wind and Fire racked up the league's #1 rushing attack last season:

Brandon Jacobs - 4th Round, 2005
Ahmad Bradshaw - 7th Round, 2007
Derrick Ward - 7th Round, 2004 (Drafted by Jets, released, signed by NYG)

While I do think Darren Sproles is a good running back he's no the back for the Eagles. Sure he can spell Westbrook but he's not an endzone puncher....The Eagles were denied so many times last year with 3rd down and endzone and couldnt score....Two things would only cause that OL and not having a down hill running back..."just my two cents"

Offensive Tackles may not be a glamour position but finding 300+ lb athletes are more rare than 200lb athletes. Runningbacks are a dime a dozen.

I would rather see our two first round picks used on positions with little draft depth. And then take a runningback in the 2nd round.

Honestly what's more important...First-string Left Tackle -or-Second-string Runningback?

Your telling me you would put a rookie left tackle to protect D-Mac's blindside that is inexperienced and underweight? Look at the unofficial depth chart as it stands now.
LT Herr.6'6/321, OG Jean-Gilles 6'3/358, C Jackson 6'4/330, RG Andrews 6'4 335, RT Andrews 6'7 345. Most important they have NFL experience against elite D-linemen. The average weight is around 330lbs.
With the exception of Andre Smith(who seems a little flakey), all the OT's in the 1st rd. of the 09 draft are about 309lbs.
RB Peterson was a 1st rd pick(Vikings) how did he turn out? The experts compare Moreno to Peterson, but more durable.(better receiving skills too) That sounds like a value pick to me. The Eagles have tried taking RB's in later rounds and have failed miserably.(except Westbrook in the 3rd). The O-line is fine for now, they cannot pass on dynamic RB's,TE's, or WR's this year. They are set up perfectly with 21,28,and 53 to grab impact players to help this franchise stay young at skill positions for years to come. And they would no doubt see playing time this year. Andy has been taking linemen with high picks for years now. Do we have a ring yet? Is that the blueprint...just take linemen and maybe we'll win a superbowl. If it is , it hasn't worked yet. All the peices are in place for them to take a top tier RB,TE,WR(they would have to move up in the 2nd to land a good WR, they have depth there, just not big bodied possession type WR's. Baskett is too inconsistent, and Brown got surpassed by a rookie.) I want skill positions this year dammit!

#19phillyfan5 -- I am right with you. It is time to break the Andy Reid mold of OL 1st round picks. Get skill position people who can score and win. Getting to the NFC championship game just is not good enough anymore. I have been saying it for weeks -- GET OFFENSIVE STUDS!!!!
