NFL  > New Orleans Saints  > REGGIE BUSH - IS IT TIME TO TRADE HIM!
April 12, 2009, 12:44 AM
When Reggie came out of USC nobody in New Orleans thought the Saints would get him. The Texans picked a defensive player. That shouted the entire sports worlds. That went the entire city of New Orleans nearly erupted. Everybody knew that the Siants would pick him.

Now below are his total stats for the year. His production is dropping year after year. He didn't even start off great. for the money that he is getting paid those numbers should be much more.

Rushing Yards Receiving Yards

2006 565 742
2007 581 417
2008 404 440

Total 1550 1599

Total Combined Yards 3149

If Reggie doesn't break 1000 yards rushing this year then it time so say so long.

I know many of you out there love him, but think about the stats. And how many millions of dollars a year the Saints are paying him for this medeocre performance.

He is starting to remind me Ricky Williams.

Sorry Laison but you (like many others) misunderstand his role in the offense. He wasn't drafted as nor expected to be a prototypical running back. To judge his rush yards to "standard" backs is erroneous. Yes injuries have limited his output, but the same can be said about Deuce and Colston. In order to be considered a disappointment, or bust, he must fail to do what he was expected to do out of college. I think that used as a combo or slash type player he could be a perennial pro bowler. They just need to use him correctly.

i agree with WHODAT91... people should actually understand what he can do, he has proved himself worthy on my oppinion, ya he dont get the yards he was getting in college, but until he got hurt last year, he was the number one leading scorer in the nfl... he was scoring on special teams, rushing, and receiving... he is an all round good player, yes we do need an every down back, but get rid of him...? hells no, do u see the division we are in..? ya and O, if he went to the RAMS,,? he would destroy in that divsion, or the AFC west just like L.T. but our whole division is based entirely on defense besides us....it makes it harder cuz we play these teams 8 times out of the season. and believe it or not, when reggie is in the game, thier whole game polan is how they are going to stop him....and some time they do.. but look what he did against other teams outside our divsion..? trust me go look ..!

April 12, 2009  03:49 PM ET

yea we do need to use him correctly, like a slot reciever , that would be correctly, like a recieving hb

April 12, 2009  05:45 PM ET

Reggie would be awesome as a receiving hb

April 12, 2009  07:05 PM ET

I believe that Reggie would do well if New Orleans would draft a great back for Bush to compliment like Chris Wells who is very similar to Deuce before he was hurt.

April 12, 2009  08:16 PM ET

No... it's time to make him play wide receiver.

And then draft a REAL runningback.

Reggie Bush+ McFadden+Russell+ Raiders= championships. please trade his "no talent" arse to the raiders. we, just like everyone else, would be happy to have him.

So when do you guys plan on building an offensive line?=

Reggie Bush playing in an elite NFL offense only manages 3.7 yards per carry. In Oakland? He'd be lucky to average 3-even.

Stats are like a swimsuit model's bathing suit. They show alot, but they don't show everything. I'd be ecstatic to see Bush sent to the Rams!

This is the problem with the pro-Reggie Bush bias. What you do in college has no bearing on your NFL production - None.

Two stud NCAA runningbacks drafted in subsequent seasons: Reggie Bush and Adrian Peterson. Peterson is the most fair comparison available due to their age, playing era and draft status.

Bush has an extra season of NFL experience and was more heavily hyped than Peterson. He also has a QB to take attention away from him.

Peterson has become the best runningback in the league... and Bush is still waiting at the starting line. Runningbacks have a short shelf-life in the NFL. If Bush hasn't started producing yet - he never will.

Agree 100% but it will never happen. I would trade him for two first roung picks.

Good luck even getting one of those.

I don't know what on earth you're talking about but I believe the comment you are quoting is referencing the fact that Reggie draws so much attention from the other teams defense that it often leaves others to pile up HUGE stats EVERYWHERE HE HAS BEEN. It is why Bush has been a huge winner wherever he has been. He is the mummy for the other teams defense EVERY TEAM HE PLAYS AGAINST. You probably don't know what that is, but every team has a player on the other team it decides in preparation that they cannot let beat them. So while you have no idea how he alters a game because you don't even watch Saints games, I am judging that by the obvious fact that you missed Reggie ROLLING ALL OVER THE VIKINGS LAST YEAR WHILE PETERSON DIDN'T DO JACK SQUAT AGAINST THE SAINTS, it's dumb to think league personnel don't recognize how unique a talent Reggie Bush is.

Reggie is a huge disappointment, admit it. Bush did not roll all over the Vikings, he returned 2 punts for a TD, and then the Saints still lost. If you consider that rolling all over a team, what do you consider Adrian doing to your Bolts...as a rookie?
At the end of the day, Reggie was drafted as a running back. He was the #2 Overall and he is paid. What does it take for you people to see a bust? If you average 500 yards rushing a year and you were the #2 overall pick, you are a bust. The kid is a phenom athlete and a special teams stud. Nobody burns a high level draft pick on special teams. I feel bad for the Saint's, they missed on this pick...

April 13, 2009  02:58 PM ET

Do you still get to keep Kim?

April 13, 2009  05:31 PM ET

So seamen, would you feel better if he was drafted as "athlete". Let me see--all the man did was set a rookie record for receptions, widens and lengthens the field for other players (Colston with 1000 yard rookie season) and a kick returner more feared than Devon Hester. Do yourself a favor and before you badger him, watch-REALLY WATCH how teams change defensive calls depending on where he lines up. Bust? Please.

Drew Brees just threw for 5000+ yards last season. And I'm supposed to believe that teams are more afraid of Reggie Bush? What has Reggie Bush ever done in the NFL to demand a defense's attention?

Yes, plenty of teams have one major offensive player which is game-planned against:

Larry Fitzgerald
Randy Moss
Brian Westbrook
Adrian Peterson
Andre Johnson

These players are game planned against week-after-week. And regardless of defensive scheme, they produce week-after-week. Reggie Bush is not that kind of NFL player. If he was, he would still be producing respectable stats.

April 13, 2009  07:09 PM ET

In short- Reggie Bush needs to be traded. He's no better than an Eric Metcalf that lasted in the league only 6 years or so. The guy is a welterweight trying to play a position that calls for at least a lightweight or middleweight strength and body type at his position. Don't get me wrong, I like the guy...he can play, but in the NFL, if you're not serious about your profession you will only last 1 to 5 years..if that. The Saints are in a prime position to pull off the biggest trade blockbuster (bigger than the Herschel Walker trade to Dallas). If Mickey Loomis has the guts, the Saints could be the first team in the Super Bowl with homefield advantage (Super Bowl will probably be in New Orleans in 2013). If the Saints make the trade, they could get possibly two number 1's, two number 2's and two number 3's in the 2011 & 2012 drafts. So, this will mean that this is the year that Reggie Bush will have to prove himself as a real franchise player...yes, Reggie Bush only has this year 2009-2010, to prove he can be an integral piece to take a team to the Super Bowl. Yes, I know the Saints need a secondary...that is to be seen with this year's free agency moves and the draft but...this is the year for Reggie. He must at least put up the same numbers as LT in San Diego or he will be traded to San Fran, the Raiders, Seattle, Rams or Cinncy. Fans must also understand that Mr. Benson is nearing his end as the team's owner..he will transfer his ownership interest to his grand-daugther probably by next year-when this happens-and if Reggie is not putting-up Pro Bowl type numbers then he is gone when the grand-daugther takes over the helm as owner. Again, I like the guy but it is not a well kept secret that most high caliber NFL players think Reggie Bush does not always come to play-especially in the off-season. Any good GM or Coach will tell you that Super Bowl teams are made in the offseason-through their constant workouts and team comradery. Again, Reggie is a great player when he's focused but we have not seen a focused Reggie Bush in the NFL-he is more concerned with being on TMZ or Access Holywood with Kim and her sisters-You would have never seen Walter Paton, Earl Campbell, Jim Brown, Eric Dickerson, or Emmit Smith with this constant distraction in the offseason and during the season. The Saints are in a great position to go to the Super Bowl...without Reggie Bush-just trade him if he does not live-up to the great player he is suppose to be.

Great read. Great assessment.

That is a lot of draft picks for any player. I can see him worth a Jay Cutler bounty at best. Which is still a huge amount of picks but I'm talking ceiling. And like you said, it has to be while the hype is strong.

Jim Brown retired in his prime so that he could pursue an acting career. If TMZ/Access Hollywood existed in 1965, he would be all over it.
