NFL  > Oakland Raiders  > Good officiating got the tuck rule correct.
April 20, 2009, 10:19 PM
Like it or not, the refs got the call correct and the Raiders have not been the same team since.

I just watched the replay on ESPN and Belicheck is correct, the refs ruled the same way against the Patriots earlier in the season against the Jets. Vinny was in the process of tucking the ball in when he was hit and the ball came out and the Patriots recovered. The refs ruled he was tucking the ball in just like Brady was and they gave the ball back to the offense just the way the rule called for.

The beauty of instant replay was evident in that game because it allowed the refs to look at things in slow motion and make the right call.

Let it go. That game was a long time ago and everyone has moved on. Plus your "analysis" is completely flawed and void of anything resembling what happened that night.

It's a bogus rule to begin with. If the ball hasn't left the QB's hand, it's fair game. I don't care what his arm was doing; if the player can't control the ball while still in possession of it, it's a fumble.

I agree, but they got the call correct and even you admit it by stating, "It's a bogus rule to begin with." Stupid rule? Yes, bad call? No.

I wasn't disputing the call. In my opinion, a good call of a bad rule still falls under the "bad" category in my book.

April 23, 2009  09:31 AM ET

That was one of the worst calls in play off history, that miss-call caused my Raiders another ring, that is why they created this "Tuck rule". When they "create" another rule, that means they F#U#........

April 23, 2009  09:32 AM ET

if they got it correct then y did they alter the rule after that season???? hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

April 23, 2009  09:34 AM ET

just cause they blew another call in favor of the patriots opponent still doesnt justify them blowing a call in favor of the pats that year.............****........... brady wasnt in motion of throwing he got DRILLED and FUMBLED............a political call..............if it wasnt a fumble then how come were talking to it 2 this day???????????hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

April 23, 2009  11:35 AM ET

Everyone yourself included thought that was a fumble for two very simple reasons. One until the snow job in New England it had always been called a fumble. Two if the officials had called it a fumble, no one, including New England, the officials, or football analysts would have disagreed. Why? Because no matter how you try to justify it, the officials screwed up in a marque game. Rather then take a hit in their already shakey reputation, they pulled up an obscure rule and used it as justification for their stupidity. If you watched that game you saw that Brady was not tucking the ball away. His protection was blown and he started running for his life. Instead of protecting the ball he did what most QB's do. He left it unprotected in his hand where it was easily knocked loose.

This play was CORRECTLY ruled a FUMBLE on the field. EVERYONE - players, coaches, and fans in the stadium and watching on TV knew it was a fumble. EVERYONE was aghast when this correct call was overturned. Bob Trumpy who was announcing the game on the radio stated at that moment, "Awe, this is an embarrassment!" He was right. The tuck rule was misapplied. The following day the NFL did damage control by having former refs interview on morning drive time radio about how the correct call was made and suddenly this fumble fiasco became a snow job.

They didn't alter the rule after the season. The competition committee reviewed the rule and made no changes to it. While it might be a bad rule, the officials in the game interpreted it correctly. Also on that play, there was a non-call where Woodson hit Brady in the head as the ball came loose; this should have been a 5 yard penalty and a first down for New England.

It's just another weak rule to protect the QB. They is no rule for any other player tucking the ball, infact, no matter what if they lose the ball it's called a fumble. It's all right, Raiders fans are true to their team, Pats are not even the favorite team in all of New England. Phonies.

1. Brady was pump faking just the way he did in a previous play to get the defense to back off. 2. The call on the field was a fumble, so the replay had to be indisputable - which it was not. 3. Even Brady new it was a fumble as he walked off the field by watching his body language. Worse call in history! Give me a break!

May 8, 2009  03:26 PM ET

Your a fool, to think for one frigging second Brady was tucking the ball makes you a complete and utter moron.

Watch it again you idiot, he pump fakes and as he is bringing the ball back in the ball gets knocked from his hands.

I'm tired of talking, discussing or even arguing with people who can't except the truth of the matter and that was that the ref was told in the headset what to say, to think otherwise is a major joke !

The following year after the "Tuck" and I use a T instead of a F, a preview magazine had a picture of Brady with both hand touching the ball and Charles Woodson looking like Superman coming in. Fumble, fumble, fumble and the Raiders get screwed. Bottom line!

June 11, 2009  12:33 AM ET

that was a horrible call. F the patriots, and F the raiders!!!

June 12, 2009  04:08 PM ET

It was a fumble. The play was called a fumble on the field. After the review the ref said the arm was going forward. He didn't say anything about the tuck rule or anything that would imply that the decision was based on this obscure rule that I have never seen called before or since in watching literally thousands of NFL games. It was a terrible call, one of the worst in the history of the league. The league tried to legitimize the outcome after the fact by digging up this tuck rule gibberish and pretending that was what the call was. End of story.

I turned the channel figuring the game was over, Pats no time-out inside of 2 minutes. I was stunned to read in the paper the next morning the Pats had won.
