Tennis  > General Tennis  > A rank system

The world rankings welcomed Dinara Safina as their new queen Monday. Supplanting Serena Williams, the Russian, who has never won a Grand Slam final, drew attention to the system's lack of merit-based achievement. In his mailbag, SI.com's Jon Wertheim also begs for the rankings to demand more frequent appearances by top players.

What determinants do you think should be changed? Will tennis seriously consider a format that is more reflective of the most current competition?

A very pertinent thread, once again another year as the season winds down (or at least it should). I can't see any other reasonable way to rank players other than through tourneys. Involving the international press in this chore would be controversial at best.

I would designate 15 or so tournaments (majors + 1000 pointers) for top ranking. The other secondary events would not suffer as the lower ranked players want prize money and the accumulation of points for 2nd tier ranking. Also this reduction in obligatory tourneys offers an off-season for those in need.
