NFL  > Kansas City Chiefs  > Potential trade down with Denver
April 24, 2009, 08:40 AM
With the draft just a little over 24 hours away, rumors are circulating of talk between KC and Denver to allow Denver to trade up and select Sanchez at 3. Looking at the trade chart, the 2 obvious options would be as follows:

1. KC's 1st (3) for Denver's 1st (12), 1st (18), and 4th (114) 2200 vs 2166
2. KC's 1st (3) for Denver's 1st (12), 1st (next year) and 3rd (79) 2200 vs 2195

With the holes Denver has on defense, I can't see them trading away both first round picks this year. As for the second option, this would basically be the same trade that they got for Cutler and I think they would be hard pressed to convince their fans that Sanchez is as good as Cutler.

However, there is another option that I think might be viable and that could be beneficial to both teams.

3. KC's 1st (3) for Denver's 1st (12), 2nd (48), 2nd (next year) and Tony Scheffler
2200 vs 1956 and a player

This trade would allow Denver to get Sanchez and still have their second 1st rounder this year. For KC, it would allow them to move down and still be in a position to get someone who can help them out on defense, it would give them a 2nd rounder to replace the one they used to trade for Cassel and Vrabel, it would give them 3 2nd rounders total for next year (nothing like stockpiling additional picks), and it would give them a good young pass catching TE to replace Tony Gonzalez.

Overall I feel that this trade would make good sense for both teams. What do you think?

I think it's time to throw that trade chart out. If I were the Chiefs, I'd take Denver's 1st (#12), 3rd, and 7th for the #3 pick. The #3 spot is a big-money pick, and it's worth it to lose the trade chart "points" to avoid the salary at #3.

Take Curry @ #3, why trade with a division rival to help them out? Curry is the best player available that will have an instant impact. Pony up, pay the money, which they have to spend and sign a quality player. Take the 2nd round they got for Gonzo for next year, and someone like Waters (who wants out already) and try to pick up a 2nd round in this draft and draft an OL.

Reports now say Denver doesn't want Sanchez.

I'm staying away from the internet draft talks for the rest of the night, all the speculation is getting re-dam-diculas!!
