NFL  > Detroit Lions  > Stafford doomed from the start?

I was along for the hype at first too but I think that Matt is destined to be the next Rick Mier!! He will show huge flashes of greatness in a simple playbook, but as it gets deeper he will struggle.

I can't believe how much money they're paying this guy. If theres a team and community that can't afford to throw away money its Detroit. Just another case of mismanagement and Irresponsibility by the Fords. They should be forced out of the league. I almost pity Lions fans.

Lions fans should be pissed-off.
Think how many positions they could have upgraded with $40 mil.
That one QB is not going to take the Lions to the Big-Dance with the supporting cast he's being handed. Nor does anyone besides the Ford family think so.

Considering what we have seen this past year regarding wealth and ability, the people of Detroit should boycott the Lions. The city has the highest foreclosure rate in the country so I would imagine some Detroiters love the message that this sends to its citizens.

April 26, 2009  10:55 PM ET

I'm a Detroit fan that isn't mad....they just got STAFFORD, the best QB in the draft. PETTIGREW, the best TE in the draft. and DELMUS, the best S in the draft.

Name a team in this draft that got more then 3 players that are the best at their position?!?

Lets not forget the highest unemployment rate and the highest drop out rate of HS kids..It is sad yes about our Blight but Like I said in another thread and like chical said the top three at that position..Draft Grade A+what a steal in the seventh with Zack Follett! We dont ask for pity we just manage to survive here!It has been a long time coming that we as Lions fans have called for Mr Ford to sell the team but they wont.Sell it to Mr Illitch. He knows how to win!!!

At first I was scratching my head thinking what is going on here. But after stepping back and looking at the picks more closely I think it was pretty good draft overall. I would have liked to have seen a CB taken like Keenan Lewis or Joe Burnett KR skills. Maybe one more DT or DE taken but otherwise they did a good job. Pettigrew will help with pass and run blocking for the O-line in addition to providing another receiving, especially short yardage and red zone threat. Delmas is a ball hawking, hard hitting tackling machine. Sammie Hill is a monster who with some development could be a top notch DT. Maybe one of the better ones out of this draft. Zach Follet could be a 7th round steal. Delivers huge hits, plays quick and big for his size, forces turnovers. Even the Penn St. receiver should provide a big boost to the return game. Dude is fast. Also he could be provide a "Wildcat" option as a running/receiving threat. Overall decent job by the Lions.

Last time I looked, a football team consisted of 11 players, not 3.

Stafford can throw the ball to Pettigrew, while Delmus comes up, slams him to the ground, makes him fumble, while Stafford recovers the fumble. Repeat 3 more times, then punt.

This is just practice.

I'm wondering what people would be saying if we drafted Oher at 20 instead of a TE. Then drafted mauluaga in the second insted of the safety. I know I would be much more content!!!

Ummm, they are paying him NFL scale for a rookie QB. The scale keeps moving up year after year...that's how it works. Maybe too much cheese in your diet to understand this, but it's why the number one pick is so tough to trade away these days. It's not the Lions who are at fault, but it's the league who instated these rules. When a true rookie scale is put in place, then the salaries will drop...until then...they will keep getting larger.

Actually, Pettigrew is the best combo TE in the draft. What does that mean? He's a good blocker...OMGOOSES...the Lions took someone who can block and catch. What a novel idea.

So they may score a few more points this year...or not. Chicago, Minnesota and Green Bay got better in the draft...Especially Green Bay. Were Screwed again. At Least were used to it right?

Illitch offered and Ford said NO! Its the only thing he owns that makes money.

May 1, 2009  09:58 AM ET

Not sure the NFL owners would approve Illitch since he already own two other sports teams in Detroit.

May 3, 2009  11:55 AM ET

TRUE! The lions got the three best players at those positions, two of those positions they actually need. Now the problem, we have arguably the worst offensive line in the league, so it doesn't matter if we have the best QB in the league(we don't) and the best skill players. If plays can't develop and you can't run the ball, you have ZERO chance for success in this league. By the way, with the worst defense in the league, everybody else will just run the ball on us and run the clock out, thereby keeping our millions of dollars on the bench.
They needed to solidify the O-line and the secondary first, then worry about skill players.
My prediction is Culpepper will be hurt by week #4, and Stafford will start and ruin any chance of having a successful career because he's not ready and the team can't support him.

If you clowns only had some brains in your heads you would be a danger to your self's and others. Not that you have but if you have been reading up on more articles than this one. You would know about that the O-line is starting to be handled and repaired the defense has a new make over with Foot, Peterson and Jackson. Some of the guys from last year are finally stepping up. we are not going to the supper bowl but we will win 6 or 7 games. Stafford was not my first choice but he is smart and charismatic and has a cannon arm to put it all together. The offensive coordinator wanted Stafford and the lions listened for once so stop being fake fans and think about the good things that are going to happen in Detroit. Go lions lets show everyone that we are on the right track.

Over a 3rd of the old roster is gone, They have signed 15 or 16 free agents,+the draft. Now if and agent that they thing might help, They are trying to sign them. What ever happens, the LIONS will be better this fall. Not ready for Super Bowel, But they are headed in the right direction. We all would like to have a winner.Hard to wait for. But with new G M and new Coachs. You know the team is only as good as the top man the G M If he is on the ball they are headed the right way. They will win some games this fall.
