NFL  > New Orleans Saints  > WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THIS YEARS SAINTS DRAFT
April 26, 2009, 07:59 PM
I am very happy that they addressed the defense. There are a couple of things that just don't get. They needed an outside linebacker not an inside linebacker. Another is the punter. Instead of drafting a need, the coach came out and said that it was for competition with other punter. They Saints traded 2 draft choices for this guy when they could have have invited a ton of punters as walkons. They do this every year.

I SEE 3 DRAFT THAT THE SAINTS MESSED UP ON. THE LB AND PUNTER (HE TOOK 2, #7 THIS YEAR, #5 NEXT YEAR).

They still need a running back.

We could switch the ILB to OLB its not that big deal, but we should have got an HB in one of our late round picks

One thing to think about, although saint's offense was the best last year it didn't make them the best team of last year. By not drafting a RB what have they really done? So their offense may drop in overall rating. It still will probally be a top 5 in the league. Jenkins was the best pick they could have had. Wells would indeed help the offense out, but they are already doing good on offense. They need a good overall team, and by drafting a LB CB and at the best time the best S they have improved their defense. Oh by the way some could argue that a punter is the best defensive position you can have.
The saints will drop their offense to the top five and drop their defense to around 12=15 next year. When this happens no one will care about a RB or being number one in offense because it will be the NFC championship game

As the later picks came in I just scratched my head and said ****. After sleeping on it and checking these guys out, they're good ...... but. I guess a little faith is called for here. That's why the guys in the front office make the big bucks. The ILB has good speed and will be moved to OLB. The safety will challenge Harper at SS. The punter reminds me of Reggie Roby (punter for Miami in the 90s) without the wrist watch of course. The UFAs they signed ALL have real good speed. Even Dockery at OG! So our LBs are getting younger and faster. Our DBs are younger and faster. All we need now is a big RB to go with PT and Reggie. Here's two names (remember you read it here first) Edgerrin James will be cut by the Cards and Thomas Jones will be available from the Jets. They drafted Shonn Greene in the second.

Holy ****! Leroy Hill is a free agent and we with out a doubt should sign him to a long term deal.

P.J. Hill didn't get drafted and he's prett big, he's about 5'10 - 235. We could look at him if we need a crash type running back.

im still a bit confused by the choice of a punter in the 5th round and giving up next years fifth round pick. they could have just waited until the 7th round to grab him. and also i believe they should have grabbed a WR or a RB instead of two secondary players. i understand that we are in need of depth but when both players drafted can play at both positions espically jenkins, i believe it was a bad year for the saints draft, but we shall see and hopefully see a few more wins this year and a trip to at least the playoffs!

well i think we did the right thing, we dont realy need another WR. Plus we took lynell hamilton (HB) off the practice squad, and i dont know were we got mike bell (HB) so that solved our HB situation. So we got it right.

bigsaintsfan is right.. we have plenty of rb's and in our system they could all do really well no matter which one steps in. However, I do see getting another starting rb in next years draft if it's not addressed in the offseason - next year.

for now, we are fine, but we still need to build our defense.

Yea it isn't that hard to switch an inside linebacker to an outside linebacker. just have him learn the different assignments of the off-season. I am a Panther fan and haven't been following what the other teams in the division do but don't the Saints have Deuce McAllister and Reggie Bush? Please correct me if I am wrong on this.

Let's not forget to add Shockey, Arrington and my man Vilma to this years draft. That's where those missing picks went.

April 29, 2009  12:42 AM ET

ok i have learned to live with the three defensive selections because after more research of these players i think they could and will a valuable selection to the saints. but i still find it hard to understand why they gave up a pic next year to grab a punter! yes i know we needed one but why not just wait till after the draft and pick up a free agent punter. they could have selected several other postiions that need to be filled... please any insight into why this was done would be appreciated.

April 29, 2009  01:09 AM ET

Hopefully Arrington steps up this year. They had that punter evaluated very high and obviously it has to be to draft a punter, and to trade up to do it. Only the Saints.

Jenkins was a great pickup.

April 29, 2009  06:23 PM ET

Here's a little fore sight into Jenkins. If you listened closely to his post draft interviews he seemed more interested in his draft position (#14) than who drafted him. Brace yourself fellow WhoDats for a contract holdout. Hope I'm wrong though.

last year Deuce hardly played and we still had the #1 offense with that I really don't see us dropping below #3 and with the moves they made with the draft and coaching staff well I'm just glad I kept my tickets

April 30, 2009  11:21 PM ET

Don't **** forget we have Heath Evans at FB now.. we did bad at our rushing attack last year becuase we had a banged up o-line and our FB, Karney was injured.

We also just signed P.J. Hill as a free agent + we could get more... I think we are set at RB. = enough said.

If anything, we need to look at updating this poisoned defense. AND WE REALLY SHOULD RESTRUCTURE OR CUT! but im not worried cause it's gonna happen. ;)
