I knew going in that the team had lots of needs, but management seemed to imply when they started that they would be improving "the trenches". This draft didn't do this, unless you look at Pettigrew as an OL. I'd be curious to see how next years draft projects with OL and DL as well as ILB. Maybe the management is looking at the transformation to be a couple years worth of picks to get them back to being able to make a run at the division title.
With what they did yesterday, I don't see them winning many more than 3 or 4 times next year. I'll hold off on being completely down on this draft until these players are seen on the NFL field, but right now, instead of the Lions losing 40-10, next year they'll lose those same games 40-24.
Wow. Thats all I can say.
How can you say this was one of thier best drafts, when they didn't even take their biggest need, the o-line, till the seventh round. Matt Stafford is not worth the money, and he wasn't the best QB in the draft.
The Lions have set themselves up to have the Number Pick in the next 3 drafts at least by not taking Jason Smith.
Yes, because taking a left tackle would have given them five to six additional wins every year for the next 3 years.
I'm not going to say I'm thrilled with my team's draft but to say by not taking a LT this year puts them in the number 1 pick slot for the next 3 years is going over board.
No wonder the Lions (Mr. Ford) dont feel any pressure to bring a change to their front office. They have fans that go along with their actions like sheep. A good draft? I cant believe that any true Lions fan thinks that! It was a colossal failure! Taking a TE at 20? I mean come on, I understand that move if you have a half decent Dfense and O line, but when our D gave up 32+ points a game last year I dont think that the major hole we had to fill was at TE. We could have had Clay Matthews or another high grade linebacker or a DE or a great O-line pick.
Then my head almost exploded the second day when we wasted a third rounder on a WR? Didnt we just pick up Ronald Curry? Why would we fill a need we just filled in free agency? It does not make any sense. Everyone says that they drafted him for the ST skills. We cant find a decent special teams player in the later rounds? We could have had a great draft and improved significantly on the right side of the ball (Defense) like the Packers did. Instead the blundering GM in Detroit looks much like his predecessor and the coach, who I thought was Defensive minded, has a barely improved roster to deal with. After this draft we should have had the weapons to go close to .500 next season, now we might win 4 games.
Oh and BTW we also picked up a RB in the later rounds. Why? We just got Maurice Morris! Another great move from our amazing front office! (I thought that the Ronald Curry and Maurice Morris moves were great, but I thought it would free us up to focus elsewhere during the draft).
Right now, the team needs depth, so the RB with ST skills wasn't a problem for me. You may be right about us Lion's fans. I have been a loyal fan for over 30 years, and every year over the last decade have been disappointed with the team's results. With that said, the Lions are my team, and I will support them. Hell, I'm almost 40 and in my lifetime, the Lions have one a total of one playoff game ('91), how can I just drop them after all I have suffered through?
There is a reason we are called "fans".

I dont care what these clowns say..I have faith in what The Lions are trying to do..You cant fill every gap in one draft.im sorry but you cannot.how you say that the draft sucked mattbyrnes,is beyond me.they took the best three at thier position.the lions have made alot of moves that show me that Mr Schwartz knows what he wants and knows what he is doing.I will alawys have faith.we need a good returner thats why the WR in the third.dont forget we got bryant johnson also we did sign 2 OT in the offseason via FA.watch and see.Mark my words. The Lions will compete for the division title this year.ya ya ya..laff all ya want.I do Think that Miami only one one game two yrs ago and they won the title the very next year...Keep hatin!!!!

I want you Lions fans to know something..........although most of you think your team shafted us in the Roy Williams trade, that still remains to be seen. Besides, it's no skin off of my back anyway.
I wish your team the best of luck in the coming year. I'm not sure wishing you had an owner like Jerry Jones is a good thing or not, but being an outsider looking in, your owner does not impress me at all. At least Jones wants to win. Ford seems to not care one way or the other.
As I said, good luck with your team, and hope your draft picks work out.
Ford wants to win. His problem is his loyalty to the people he employees, and the fact, he really doesn't know how to win. Hopefully the new team in place can change that. Ford is a good owner, he isn't tight with their budget but is loyal to a fault.

I dont think it was a shaft.I think it was fair market value.I do think though that Boldin is better and could have gotten more for him..Poor AZ.I would have givin up the #20 pick and a fourth for him possibly a third!I hope they work out as well.I hope Dallas has a good year as well.My Fav teams are the Lions the Patriots and the Cowboy's!I hate the Steeler's!!!

Although my fave team is the 'Boys, I enjoy watching the game itself, regardless of teams and records. Watching Sims and Sanders was a lot of fun, but then so was watching Earl Campbell, and numerous other running backs, QB's, etc.
Well, not all think it was a shafting, but some have said as much. RW didn't have much of a chance last year, coming in late, missing training camp, Owens being Owens (Thank God and Greyhound he is GONE!). I think, being that he is now home, or at least closer to home, he will do a lot better.
I used to hate the Steelers, Dolphins, and a few others. But, what for? They're all competing for the same thing everyone else is, so I got off of the hating thing, and started enjoying the game for what it is.
Ford is the Fault. He does not care at all about wins....Its about the money. As long as Lions Fans keep drinkin' Ford's Koolaid and buying His tickets at his Stadium. He's happy. He may want to win but doesn't know how...Jim Schwartz said they were going to build from the trenches out...Clintonion...Damien Woody was a Pro Bowler....Whoopie! He sucked. I agree about zach follet but we had and still have a Glaring need at ILB...I will not buy any tickets to see this team. 2-14 will be there record. They'll have a chance to win others but will blow them as well. Thank You Ford for 50 years of mediocrity
