NFL  > Detroit Lions  > Lions worthiness of fan adulation
April 29, 2009, 10:16 AM
I'm a 47 year-old fan of the Lions, and for the last twenty, a suffering one. We were half way decent in the '80's. Anyone remember "another one bites the dust"? One game away from the Superbowl in the '90's---man, I hate the Redskins. But, since Barry's, abrupt, departure, it has been pure, abject torture. Last year, I watched the entire season fast forward on my DVR. Even then I didn't make it all the way through half of them. Looking for another team to root for, tho, is like someone wanting another wife because the current still has her baby-weight. I don't want to be that guy. I want to be rewarded for my loyalty. And I would, in a heart beat, if Mr. Ford Sr. called me today, haul Gatorade and collect dirty towels to be a part of another losing season. I'm not giving up. I'm not giving in. I am not a fair-weather-fan!

I commend you, Mr Bowlwins. I know that what I am about to say will make no sense, being that the Lions went winless last year, but there once was a man who complained all the time because he had no shoes. He stopped complaining when he met a man with no feet.

Yes, the Lions were not only shoeless last year, but had no feet either. Your team may never win another game. Ever. But, they know they have at least ONE fan............you. You can be the Lions' Marine........when the going gets tough, the tough get going. This bud's for you, Mr Bowling Shoe Giver Outer...........errrrrr.........I mean Bowlwins.

He isn't the only Lion fan. Just watch one of their home games. They are selling out Ford Field. Detroit maybe Hockeytown, but if the Lions could turn it around and get back into the playoffs on a regular basis (think back to Wayne Fontes time in charge) the city would show the nation we are a Football town.

Yes, I know he's not the only Lions fan. I used to like watching them play when Sims and Sanders played, even when they played my 'Boys.

I wish you guys the best of luck this coming season, tho.

BTW, Thank your GM for Roy Williams and Kitna. Especially Kitna. I think RW will be coming out this year, and Kitna's always been a good QB.

They got a new logo, they are already super bowl champs!!!!!

It's something when you have more fans from other teams that have comments. What are they thinking ? but it's ok say what ever you want. YOU CAN'T QUESTION OUR LOYATY, but we can question YOURS !!!!

You can question mine all you wish. I don't understand your owner and why he does as he does, but then I question the 'Boys owner on occasion.

Like I said, I wish you guys the best of luck. Take it as you want.

No sense in quitting now. I've been a Cowboy fan for over 40.......I've seen it all.

From an outsider looking in, I think the Lions main problem is an owner who isn't very passionate about his team. The reason I say this is look how long Matt Millen was the GM. Too much "buddy-buddy" there.

That could be because of a number of factors.......interest in only making cars and the team is just a "sideline money maker", his age, _________ and fill in the blank<<.

Hopefully, this new GM and his assembly will turn things around for you fans.

What I have learned over the years, especially in the "down" years, is to enjoy the game itself, instead of concentrating on one team. I watch all the teams I can. What works for me, may not work for you, but if you love the game itself, it can help.

Good luck.

I am a Lions fan for 40 years and a cowboys fan for the same.I do live in Royal Oak and still absolutely love the Lions despite of thier short comings. You can have RW you can have Kitna. They both suck. The only reason RW was any good is because he was really the only receiver we had besides CJ.Now CJ will rock the House and RW will stink up your's!!!Good luck with the double coverage on RW Cuz your best receiver left ya and went to Buffalo..hahahahahahahahaha!!!There are plenty of Lions fans left in the world!!!We are not band wagon fans like so many around the league!!!prediction...Cowboys will finish 7-9 this year cuz ROMO sux

I was going to say something, but after reading your profile, and seeing that you're a single father of two girls, I will respect you for that. So, anything I have to say about your Lions, I decided it wasn't worth it.

Good luck with your team and your family.

May 1, 2009  10:18 PM ET

why ya gotta even say that about my family. They dont have anything to do with anything.I am a grown Man.It is just my opinion, thats all.Dont take offense.what didnt ya like the romo comment?well he does suck!!I know ya cut TO..Dumb move.My prediction of the Lions is this..either they will have a similar season as the Dolphins did last year or we will win only 6 games. So ya can talk s.h.it to me about me but dont even say that after reading my profile and seeing im a single of two..cmon now. That was uncalled for!!Just bring it its cool i dont take offense!!!Just a sports messege board..I am a Big Boy..LOL

I know how it is to be a single father. I used to be one, and be in the military at the same time. Not many fathers would take on that responsibility and for that, you do indeed have my respect. That's all I was saying, or meant to say.

If you would read any of my comments, you'd notice I was wishing the Lions the best of luck this coming year. I didn't come here to get into a "war of words" with anyone. You have your opinion, much as I do mine, and if you think Romo sucks, fine.

Besides, I have nothing to do with how Romo plays, or T.O. being cut, or anything Jerry Jones does, much like you don't with who runs the Lions. Maybe cutting Owens was a dumb move, but they forgot to call me and ask my opinion. ...LOL....

Yes, we are "big boys", I agree. I don't take offense at anyone's opinion about the 'Boys, because it wouldn't do anything but maybe create hate and discontent. So, why even bother letting "Romo sucks", or "Dallas sucks" bother me? Sometimes, they do suck, in fact....but what team don't? I've seen them suck so bad, they could suck chrome off a Harley Davidson exhaust pipe.........Campo years....the 60's growing pains...........etc.

There are some times I make comments here when I am in a joking mood..........I was joking with Mr Bowling whatever up above, because of the way he worded his comment, as if he'd do anything..............even clean sweaty underwear, to be a "loyal fan".........it was just the way I read it.....maybe he meant differently, but that's the way I saw it, and I joked about it in my comment, ..........just having fun, without getting too personal. He never replied, so I don't know how he took it.

May 2, 2009  07:35 AM ET

By the way, insofar as profiles are concerned, you and I, and anyone else, have the option of keeping it closed off from "peering eyes" so to speak. If you didn't want anyone to read it, you could have kept them from doing so. much like I could. You chose to let people read about you, much like I have.

Feel free to check mine out if you so desire. That's what it's all about. To exchange ideas, comments, opinions, ........from one side of the world to the other. Some choose to come here and start being derogatory to other people, their teams, and their opinions. I can do that, and I have, but I don't start it. Being that I was in the Navy, I have met people from different parts of the world, different cultures, and it can be interesting. This can be an extension of that as well, and that's what I try to do.

I have been a fan for 40 yrs. myself! And for forty yrs. I have never seen the Fans believe that the LIONS could win! And they wont if you don't start trusting in what they are doing!
Mayhew and Schwartz are working their tails off trying to make the LIONS a better TEAM! And they have been doing a great job! What? Why, are you crying NOW? What is the problem? They went out like any other team and got the best players that they could in Free Agency and the draft! And are STILL working at it! Stop whining! WE |HAVE A BETTER TEAM Already!
We are going to WIN GAMES this year! I don't know how many ? But more than NONE!
If the Fans in this town would back the team up instead off crying ALL the time we might get better results! I am a LIONS FAN and I want to WIN! I don't want to even think about LOSING!
Start believing, give them a chance,do a rain dance I DONT CARE! JUST SHUT UP THE COMPLAINING CRAP AND THE WORRYING BULL AND WAIT AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS!
I love DETROIT and our TEAMS! BUT WHEN IT COMES TO THE LIONS THIS IS THE WORST FAN TOWN THAT THERE IS IN THE NFL!
WHOEVER IS SAYING WHATEVER ABOUT OUR TEAM I HOPE IS SOMEONE FROM ANOTHER TOWN AND ANOTHER TEAM!
JUST ONCE IF THIS TOWN AND THESE SO CALLED FANS WOULD STICK UP FOR THIER TEAM AND NOT ANYLIZE EVERY LITTLE THING THAT IS WRONG AND START LOOKING AT WHAT IS RIGHT ! WE MIGHT,MIGHT START TO WIN! YOU WUSSIES!
YOU KNOW I THINK THAT IT'S NOT THE TEAM? IT'S THE FAN BASE!
WHEN PEOPLE SAY THE LIONS CAN'T EVER DO IT YOU SHOULD TELL THEM TO CRAM IT! WELL SEE ABOUT THAT!
GO LIONS! GO LIONS! GO LIONS! DONT LISTEN TO ALL THE NEGATIVE MORONS OUT THERE AND JUST DO IT! ( :

The best of luck to you and the Lions, 3 and 1, as I've said many times.

In my opinion, your team needs an owner who would be more hands on, and is passionate about the game and his team. Maybe not as much as Jerry Jones is, but you have to admit he wants to win. Ford evidently doesn't care one way or the other. The team must be a huge tax write off or something, but he should realize that there are real people involved in this team......people who care, and would love nothing more than to field a winner.not just coaches and players, but the fans.....the fans are of the utmost importance, because if it wasn't for the fans, there likely wouldn't be a team.

Maybe your new GM will get things going for you and other fans, and I sincerely hope he does. But, you will have to be patient and give him some time to get it going.

hang in there....................

No problem. We all have brain farts occasionally....*grins* I was about to "get smart" with you for something,(forgotten already) although it wouldn't have caused a "war of words" if you will. Then, as usual, I checked the profile first before saying anything. If I would have said anything at all. That helps me get a better understanding of who I'm dealing with, and whether I will respond critically or not. Being that I was a single father once, what I read about you, changed the path I was going down. For the better, I might add. Sometimes it keeps me from making a mistake too.
I enjoy chatting with people from all over the country about all of the teams, not just mine. I enjoy football, period. Yes, I watch the Lions when they show down here as well. What better way for me to understand what's going on with a certain team than to discuss it with that teams fans?

Roy Williams may have just needed a change of scenery.......who knows? Sometimes that happens. I did NOT agree on the trade when Jerry did it, because at the time, we needed help in the secondary. So, he goes and trades for a receiver, who would have been a free agent at the end of the year anyway, but looking at it from a different perspective.....yes, he could have got RW for nothing if he had waited, but then maybe he wanted to help your team out in a round about way, by trading for him and giving you guys some extra draft picks, all the while keeping it above board?
I would think that might have been the real reason behind it, because it made no sense at all at the time. If that is the case, then I would have to commend JJ for doing that. Everyone made out, and if RW lives up to what we need, then we're all happy.

I am glad T.O. is gone, tho. Superb athlete, but a problem we sure don't need. He was having problems getting open last year, so maybe Buffalo can use him. Good luck with that.

You should go to the SI Cowboys page and read some stats on Romo Got some articles there, comparing Romo's first 39 starts with other QB's, past and present. Considering what we had after Aikman and before Romo, I would NOT take 40 Quincy Carters for 1 Romo. I think he will be fine this year. May not win a SB, but I think we'll make the playoffs anyway. Or a winning season.

Good luck, man.......I hope the Lions do a "Miami" this year...........*grins*
