Tony Romo Compared to 8 Greats After 39 Starts in Career
02:08 PM ET 04.29 Share Edit Post Delete Post Views 3 Comments 0
I compiled these stats for each quarterback at www.pro-football-reference.com . These stats are each players' stats after 39 starts. Since Romo has 39 career starts, thats my comparison number of games. After looking at these numbers, we know Romo is more then capable of greatness. For the exception of Marino, Romo pretty much has stats that were actually better then the others. His future looks very bright.

Attempts Comp. Yds. Pct. TDs. INTs.

MARINO 1,370 839 11,103 61.2 95 42

ROMO 1,280 815 10,300 63.6 78 43

MONTANA 1,318 841 9,623 63.8 64 36

P. MANNING 1,355 818 10.024 60.0 67 50

FAVRE 1,341 833 8.113 62.1 52 45

S. YOUNG 1,072 672 8,412 62.6 51 35

AIKMAN 1,086 636 7,290 58.5 32 48

STAUBACH 912 528 7,395 57.8 49 42

BRADSHAW 969 469 6.098 48.4 36 63

Just looking at the stats, you see that some players got off to slow starts. Badshaw was a big game player like no other but his regular season numbers weren't great. His numbers picked up when Swann and Stallworth got drafted before the 74 season. Romo is 2nd in completion pct. He had more yards passing then everyone except Marino and is only 2nd to Marino in touchdown passes. Amazingly Romo had only 1 more INT then Marino did. He had 7 less INTs then Manning did. I believe all Jones has to do is put the players around Romo. Hey! look at the numbers guys! Romo will start winning the big games very soon. The future of the Cowboys could be very bright. Gotta love the numbers !!!!

are you related to romo? i responded to this earlier, but it seems to keep reappearing in different areas.

Agreed, but you should know that injuries to key people , personnel changes, and what have you, could have a bearing on his future. As long as he can stand upright and has time to throw, with no injuries to his throwing hand, the sky could very well be the limit to his success.

As long as Jerry gets him some play makers, I see no reason why Romo won't be good. Roy Williams will have to come to play, as will Austin, Crayton, and others. They have to play as a team before anything else tho. It should be a exciting season this year, and hopefully, what went wrong last year, will stay in the past.

Did you ever do any research on the NFL's worst head coaches? That should be interesting. My fave 2 worst coaches are Rich Kotite of the Eagles, and Ray Handley of the Giants. Those two were laughers. Campo wasn't a very good head coach, and could find his way on that list, but he's still employed in coaching.

Yes indeed he is. In fact, he's Romo's 3rd cousin, twice removed. He is also Jerry Jones's great great nephew from his mother's step uncles side, who immigrated here from Sicily back in the day.

*laffin*........................and joking too.......................

What this shows is that Romo has the skills, now he has the playoff experience...granted it has been tough experience, but experience none the less...

Now a few wins in the dance and a ring and his name gets elevated amongst the greats!

ok. I have one question. After 39 starts compared to all of the other QBs you listed, how many playoff games as Romo won compared to the others? Just curious. And Romo has been in the league since 2003. (he didn't actually get any playing time in '03 though so we can say '04). I think that all of those QBs you listed have also won a Super Bowl. Correct? Romo isn't even close to what you said as capable of greatness. He can't even win a playoff game with the Dallas Cowboys and Terrel Owens as a Wide Receiver (well he had him as a WR).

How many more playmakers does it take?

I don't want to seem like someone crashing the boards and bashing teams, but there are a lot of weapons in Dallas. You have a solid run game and receivers, one of the best all-around tight ends, and a great line. And that's just offense. There's always been something missing in Romo, but I think that he has the tools around him already. Y'all should have a good season this year.

Whoa trying something new? Man you are thinking outside the box! Oh wait no you aren't. Since when has 3 seasons been the decider on a person's career? Tony will win big sooner or later.

Again, I will say this....compare Romo to Quincy Carter, Drew Henson, Anthony Wright, Chad Hutchinson, and whoever else I missed since Aikman............who would you want to take Romo's place? I didn't think so.

Romo didn't actually start any games til he replaced Bledsoe in 06, not 04.

Wrong. Marino never won a SB, so should we say he wasn't any good? Manning, Favre, and Young only have ONE SB win. It took Peyton 7 years before he got there, so is he no good too? The problem with people is they have no patience, especially fans.

No one is claiming Romo as being "great".....all that's being done here is comparing the first 39 games stats between Romo and others. That's it. It's possible that Romo won't amount to a hill of beans, but it's also possible that he could become one of the best too..........Time will tell

Your opinion counts.....as does anyone else's. Yes, there are a lot of weapons there...it's a matter of how they are utilized, and that falls to coaching.

I don't think Wade Wilson is the best QB coach in the world. He wasn't the best QB period, when he played, either. If Romo gets good QB coaching, he has the ability to learn. Garrett was a back up for a reason when he played, so that says something there. Coaching. I think that may be the main reason for Romo falling short, not to mention atrocious play calling.

Peyton Manning 1st three playoff appearances:

L 19-16 Passer rating - 62.3
L 23-17 Passer rating - 82.0
L 41-0 Passer rating - 31.2

Manning was in his 6th NFL season as a starter before winning his FIRST playoff game. His 10th NFL season as a starter before ever making it to the Super Bowl at the age of 31. For his career he's 7-8 in post season games with a passer rating of 85.0 and 4 of those 7 wins came in the Super Bowl season. Aside from that year, when he was actually pretty horrible in the playoffs, he's 3-8 in the post season.

People who whine about Romo being 0-2 in the playoffs clearly don't know much about Peyton Manning who MOST people would call the best QB in the NFL and one of the best in NFL history. Romo has two full seasons as a starter under his belt, he only needs to win one playoff game within the next 4 years to match Mannings start to his career.

9 years. I was thinking they won it in the '07 season but it was the '06 season, Peyton's ninth in the NFL.

Ok, here come the stats....

Marino - won a playoff game his 2nd yr as a starter but NO RING
Montana - won a playoff game in his 3rd year and got a ring the same season (4 total)
Manning - took 6 seasons to win a playoff game and 9 to get a ring (1 total)
Favre - took 2 seasons to win a playoff game and 6 to get a ring (1 total)
Young - took 3 seasons starting to get a win and 5 to get a ring (1 total)
Aikman - took 3 seasons to get a win and 4 to get a ring (3 total)
Staubach - got a win and a ring in his 1st season starting (2 total)
Bradshaw - got a win in his 3rd season and the ring in season 5 (4 total)

What do the numbers say?

They say that of ALL these HALL OF FAME QB's the average is:

3 seasons STARTING to get that 1st playoff win and
5 seasons STARTING to get that 1st title.

Guess what?

Romo has been the starter in Dallas for 2.5 seasons

Romo also plays during the Salary Cap Era.

So, in other words, this is about the time that Tony should be getting that 1st win and within a year or so, he should get a title based off of history.

If you guys would look at the stud QB's over the last 30years, Tony is right on track...the issue is he is a good looking kid, has a easy going attitude and dates a hot girl...not to mention he plays the toughest spot on the field for the most recognized team in professional sports.

Love him or hate him, Romo is an elite QB that is about to get his due.

May 1, 2009  12:01 PM ET

Many of the Qb's were 1st or 2nd year players when they racked up a bunch of bad stats... I don't like stats, but let Tony sink or swim on his own merit. We don't need these stat arguments to determine that he is a heck of a QB when he o-line gives him time. Even when they don't give him time, he is still really good, but things start to go wrong when he has no time and his WR's aren't open, and he runs, and gets him from behind... then... not so good.

May 1, 2009  12:20 PM ET

Romo is a good QB, but until he actually leads his team to Playoff victories, he will not be an elite QB.

Hey has choked in every big game he has played in. Bradshaw didn't have the numbers, but when asked to- he came through. Romo can put up all the numbers he wants -but; until he comes through in the clutch, becomes a leader in the locker room, and quits doing stupid things like going to Mexico before a playoff game, he is an also ran.

He was ALLOWED to go to Mexico.....AGAIN, what I mentioned earlier..........COACHING.

Bradshaw.....different era, different coaching............Bradshaw had to prove he wasn't some Louisiana hick too.............I watched and listened to a lot of that going on back then. People find faults with everyone, regardless of team, era, or position.

AGAIN, I will say this........I'd rather ONE Romo that 40 Quincy Carters, or any of those bums we had before.

You are entitled to your opinion, but opinions are like as**oles......everyone has one, but some stink more than others.

I dont think Romo will ever be an elite qb...but he has a very very good shot at being a good qb capable of wining rings, if you say otherwise you are just being an ignorant arrogant fool...but his time is getting cut short so if he dont produce hes out, and I dont really have the kinda faith in Kitna as I do in Romo...
