NFL  > General NFL  > Pats DRAFT > WHERE THEY SCREWED UP ! ! !
April 30, 2009, 10:23 AM
First off let me state that the Patriots did not have a terrible draft just because they didnt come away with "name brand stars " . I believe they got pretty much got what they set out to snag . Some of the good things they accomplished : 1) Filled a major need position at Db ( Chung & D Butler ) . 2) Tackled their upcoming O-Line / D-Line contract issues by stocking up on both sides of the ball ( Brace , Pryor , Vollmer , Ohrnberger , Bussey ) . 3) Took a flyer on an injured Wr -whose name would have been mentioned along with the other first round caliber wrs if he didnt have the injury issue ( Tate ). 4) Grabbed a LB that might just prove to be more productive than the so-called "elite" magazine cover pretty boys ( McKenzie ). 5 ) Last and MOST IMPORTANTLY : Added the greatest Long Snapper in the history of college football ( J Ingram ) ... just kidding ...this one may end up a throwaway . SO WHERE DID THEY "F" UP ? ... Answer : Second Round > Pick # 58 . . .SEBASTIAN VOLLMER . . . "SeaBass " . . . Germanic Big Boy ... Quick feet . . . Huge Potential ...Very nice addition to the Patriots arsenal ! Otay ...that said , Do I really think they screwed up with this selection ? Answer : YAH VOLT ! Reason : Wayyyyyyyyyy too early . Most if not all the buzz on him pointed to him being a late round selection ( some Gm's when polled disclosed they thought he would probably not even be drafted ) He was roundly regarded as a project ( and an injury risk - due to his major back surgery in 2006 ) . Pats easily could have traded back ( maybe even wayyyyyy back ) and still landed him . 2nd rounders are highly coveted assets - they could have gotten at least a third & a fourth for that # 58 ( and selected him there ) . WHY DID THEY TAKE HIM SO HIGH ?....Answer : PAUL KRUGER / FILI MOALA ! My guess is Bill Belichik really wanted one of these guys and right before the Pats picked - Colts Bill Polian traded up with Dolphins to take Moala at # 56 / Ravens then grabbed Kruger at # 57. Poor BB was stunned ( hadn't set up a trading partner prior - fully expecting to grab one of them ). PLAN B - "Uhh...guess we better grab the big german before we lose out on him too ." I believe BB is one of ( if not the best ) NFL Draft manipulator out there . But he's human - and in this particular case , he dropped the ball . NO BIGGIE ( in fact he showed what he was made of when he ended up landing two 2nd rounders for 2010 ) Let's hope there are no Sabastian "way- too-early" VOLLMERS out there next year .
