I'm sorry but your whole argument seems to be based on what other GM's have said(although you cite no sources) and your assertion that Vollmar would have been there later on in the draft. You cant just assume he would have lasted, and I have come to trust more in BB's scouting and opinion than "anonymous GM's" around the league..... Just look at how the Raiders and Broncos seemed to have players rated differently than the rest of the league. You have to go with the best fit for your team and the Pats obviously did that in thier mind so I would have to respectfully disagree with your premise. Having said that, who knows, maybe it will be a huge bust of a pick lol.......
Hey IrishCLO1976 , good point ( the references to VOLLMERS value as it pertained to GMS @ the league came from Peter King 's MMQ - so yah- though it's from a repitable source - it's still heresay . What is fact is ALL other info sources like trade mags & on -line evaluations (yes , including mocks ) Had Vollmer either drafted very low or not at all . I will conclude by stealing & tweakin' your closing line ... Having said that, who knows, maybe it will be a huge steal of a pick lol.......

Some interesting points here. But no one had Logan Mankins rated as a first rounder. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And Mr. Bill seems to have a plan.

Woah, they "messed up their draft" because they took a guy one round earlier than he was projected to go?
Oy vey.
Hey ShadyIAE , The "messed up their draft" headline was just an attention getter
( was just being facetiuos )

All speculation. No one knows who the Patriots wanted in the draft.
Bingo! None of us will ever know who Belichick really wants. Let's say the German is a bust, for arguments sake. Chung and Butler are studs. And let's be clear that Raji who went to Green Bay had a guy named Brace who ate up a ton of blocks. Belichick LOVES space eaters on the defensive line, so Kruger and Moala don't fit the mold (unless he projected Kruger in the Vrabel role). McKenzie was an absolute steal and Tate could be too, presuming that the locker room can keep him from going all Pacman Jones-like. Odds are: Tate drinks the Kool-Aid they serve up there in New England and finally becomes productive beyond special teams in 2010 (with two additional second rounders in a stockpiled draft). Belichick was clear that he saw no value in round one and he executed his plan perfectly (cap friendly/lots of depth).
billy b is less a genius now than a few years back so he needs many picks what with all the huge busts he has "masterfully" chosen the last few drafts. eisen or someone questioned one of his moves openly asking if it had been the raiders would not they have been panned for being the stupid arse raiders? ..... look the the pats machine whilst once well oiled& humming along has entered de-evolution and is but a few years from needing a major overhaul. ol billy out smarted himself and created a copycat of the indy colt teams he dominated earlier in the decade. a pass 1st no run team...... that plays shoddy defense and trys to outscore everyone. Those teams had trouble closing the deal and so did little billy ;once upon a time belistein outsmarted people aided by great preparation and prodigious assistance from the zebras built a pseudodynasty; howevva (thanks SAS) THE end is near because ol billy got sentimental...... the old billy would have kept cassel and traded brady for 10 picks or something but ol bill couldn't pull the trigger and the cheating taperiots & their annoyingly moronic fans will pay the piper.
Logan Mankins wasn't ever projected as a first round pick when the Pats drafted him. In fact at the time of that pick, Mel Kiper was actually stunned into silence for the first time in history. That one has worked out pretty well. Dante Scarneccia knows O-Line prospects. Volmer will be just fine.
Plus, you can't judge a draft on just one pick. I think Chung, Brace, Butler, Tate, and McKenzie all have a ton of potential.

Most of the 'experts' didn't project Vollmer high because he didn't go to the combine. The Pats excel at finding O-Linemen that others don't see as top shelf.

Upon further reflection - KRUGER was most probably the Pats target at #58 ( Vrabel clone ) . The Ravens know a lil bit about drafting LB's ( where he is projected to be a better NFL fit than at D end ) and unfortunately they just happened to have owned the #57 pick ( though in hindsight - the Pats certainly could have remedied that situation beforehand - as the two teams made an earlier 1st round deal where-as the Pats could have included the flip-flopping of 2nd round positioning ...but indsight is 20/20 and I digress ...My problem with the Pats selecting Seabass is actually one of "WHEN " not "WHY " . The guy certainly has the potential to be something special . In day one of Pats rookie mini camp - the staff was very impressed with his quick footwork (especially for such a huge guy ). The Pats could have / should have used the pick to trade down ( or even used it in a package to snag a # 1 for 2010 ...as both the Seahawks (Broncs ) and 49ers ( Panthers ) succesfully did with their 2nd rounders . The draft is all about drafting VALUE ...not drafting Players , and in this rare occurence - I believe the Pats undervalued their #58 pick .
NOTE : To the commentors out there that harp on my reasoning as "conjecture " ...I plead guilty ( but what the F is this entire sights' purpose but to share your thoughts ...i.e. CONJECTURE )

wow thats a great point, and i thought that when i read it over 4 weeks ageo on the NFL website. Your plagirising your whole point. Dont try and say that this is yours it is the SAMETHING, every theing about what your saying is just tajen from the NFL.com your a loser and a moroon. Have a though for yourself just one time. On top of that no it was not too early, yes maby they could have goten him in the 3ed, but two o-line man had just come off the bord and BB did not want to risk not getting him. So go steal some other stuff and post it up saying it's your, loser.

First off let me state that I don't believe the Patriots had a mediocre draft just because they didnt come away with any "name brand stars " . I think they pretty much got what they set out to snag . Some of the good things they accomplished : 1) Filled a major need position at Db ( Chung & D Butler ) . 2) Tackled their upcoming O-Line / D-Line contract issues by stocking up on both sides of the ball ( Brace , Pryor , Vollmer , Ohrnberger , Bussey ) . 3) Took a flyer on an injured Wr -whose name would have been mentioned along with the other first round caliber wrs if he didnt have the injury issue ( Tate ). 4) Grabbed a LB that might just prove to be more productive than the so-called "elite" magazine cover pretty boys ( McKenzie ). 5 ) Last and MOST IMPORTANTLY : Added the greatest Long Snapper in the history of college football ( J Ingram ) ... just kidding ...this one's probably just a throwaway . SO WHERE DID THEY "F" UP ? ... Answer : Second Round > Pick # 58 . . .SEBASTIAN VOLLMER . . . "SeaBass " . . . Germanic Big Boy ... Quick feet . . . Huge Potential ...Very nice addition to the Patriots arsenal ! Otay ...that said , Do I really think they screwed up with this selection ? Answer : YAH VOLT ! Reason : Wayyyyyyyyyy too early . Most if not all the buzz on him pointed to him being a late round selection ( some Gm's when polled disclosed they thought he would probably not even be drafted ) He was roundly regarded as a project ( and an injury risk - due to his major back surgery in 2006 ) . Pats easily could have traded back ( maybe even wayyyyyy back ) and still landed VOLLMER . 2nd rounders are highly coveted assets - they could have gotten at least a third & a fourth for that # 58 ( and selected him there ) . WHY DID THEY TAKE HIM SO HIGH ?....Answer : PAUL KRUGER / FILI MOALA ! My guess is Bill Belichik really wanted one of these guys and right before the Pats picked - Colts Bill Polian traded up with Dolphins to take Moala at # 56 / Ravens then grabbed Kruger at # 57. Poor BB was stunned ( hadn't set up a trading partner prior - fully expecting to grab one of them ). PLAN B - "Uhh...guess we better grab the big german before we lose out on him too ." I believe BB is one of ( if not the best ) NFL Draft manipulators out there . But he's human - and in this particular case , he dropped the ball . NO BIGGIE ( in fact he showed what he was made of when he ended up landing two 2nd rounders for 2010 ) Let's hope there are no Sabastian "way- too-early" VOLLMERS out there next year . . . otay .. ANYBODY AGREE / DISAGREE WITH THE ASSUMPTION THE PATS SCREWED UP THE VOLLMER PICK ?

Given the fact the Pats quickly traded down their first round pick and then
maneuvered around more picks for this season and next year, I would say they did and got just what they wanted. Bill had said, he did not think this was a strong draft for their main areas of need and he acted on that.
The Pats also have real good, free agent players next year they will need to work on resigning. Why tie up a bunch of cash from this year's 1st round pick, if the didn't feel any of the available 1st round players were needed or worth the big bucks?
Plus, the Pats still got 12 players, all with a strong, immediate upsides and/or allot of potential. Many building blocks for the short and longer term future.
Add to that all that the extra 2nd round and a few other extra picks for next year, I would say they did an excellent job.
The Patriots, for a supposedly championship caliber team, posted an incredibly weak 89.8 Defensive Passer Rating, ranking them 23rd in the league.
They drafted defenders with their first three picks, including a safety in Chung and a corner with Butler.
Hard to argue with that.
With Brady back in 09, offense will be a non-issue. Also, the acquisitions of WR Galloway and RB Taylor won't hurt their offense one bit.
But as long as their pass defense struggles in the regular season and especially in the post season, all their offensive prowess will be for naught.
Oh, and by the way, they will still lose to the Cowboys regardless. ROFL
