Boxing  > General Boxing  > Will Mayweather agree to fight Pacquiao?
May 4, 2009, 10:34 AM
It's official: Floyd Mayweather Jr. is coming back, and he's taking on Juan Manuel Marquez first. But do you think "Money May" will agree to take on Manny Pacquiao afterward? Mayweather's been criticized for not fighting the toughest guys available. Will he finally agree to face one of, if not the, top guy in the sport right now?
May 4, 2009  12:37 PM ET

Nope. A chicken doesn't shed feathers just like that. I'm pretty sure "Money" will look to some patsy to earn a paycheck rather than risk ruining his "Pretty Boy" looks against Manny Pacquiao.

That would be an interesting fight but I dont think so. If he's trainer is also his father, then Floyd Jr. needs to rethink about it. Hatton was the best evidence that Mayweather Sr. is not really the best trainer afterall.

May 4, 2009  01:30 PM ET

Absolutely. After Floyd beats Marquez (guess I just gave my prediction), he will have claim that he beat a fighter that Pacman struggled with in two fights. Pacman already has that claim over Floyd with great wins over Hatton and Oscar. Plus, this will be the reason money is printed in America. Both fighters would be guaranteed to receive over $25 mil for the fight, and we all kno Floyd loves his money. OUT

Floyd's father is not his trainer. His uncle is, and I think Mayweather will fight Pac Man and win.

He's going to fight Pacquiao because he's going to be given a lot of money to say yes to that fight. The purse in that fight for both men should be LARGE!

May 4, 2009  02:39 PM ET

Fighting Pacquiao is the only reason he came back.

May 4, 2009  04:18 PM ET

After Pac's demolition of Hatton, highly doubtful. I think Floyd is an elite boxer with unparralleled skill, but he's been ducking boxers that have a chance to beat him such as Mosley, Margarito, and Cotto. I think before he announced his comeback he was considering Pac because he didn't think Pac could hurt him but now...Mayweather will probably try to lure Oscar De La Hoya out of retirement for a high reward low risk fight.

May 4, 2009  04:23 PM ET

I think the reason Mayweather came back was to fight Pacquiao! His first fight back is against Juan Manuel Marquez. Marquez is a great fighter! He gave Pacquiao all he could handle in their two fights. They fought to a draw and and controversial decision win for Pacquiao. I personally think that the second fight was a draw as well. Floyd Jr. is not trained by Floyd senior. He's trained by his Uncle Roger. Floyd Mayweather Sr. only trained Hatton for his last two fights. It's hard to undo bad habbits and Hatton doesn't seem to listen to his corner very well. I didn't see Hatton execute anything in the Pacquiao fight that Mayweather Sr. was trying to teach him. I'd love to see Mayweather vs Pacquiao and the fight would be great for boxing and a huge payday for both fighters! I'd say it will happen if Mayweather beats Marquez and I think he will.

While impressive, I think we should be careful not to read too much into the Hatton fight. It's not like Manny has a string of 2nd round knockouts to his credit. He went 8 rounds to knock out a woefully out of shape De La Hoya and 2 fights before that was the controversial decision to Marquez. I can see wanting to take him seriously, but fear him? I can't see that. To play devil's advocate, would we be thinking differently if Hatton had actually kept his hands up and the fight went 6 or 7 rounds?

All that being said, I think what Pacquaio has done is incredibly impressive and even if he loses to Floyd he may go down as the better fighter (due to competition, the moving up in weight, etc.) And, he has a good change to beat Floyd (though I don't think he will).

Pacquiao will definitely go down as the greater fighter in many minds win or lose to a match with Floyd. He's much more respected in the boxing world with his great fights: 2 against Barrera, the Trilogy against Morales, another possible Trilogy against Marquez, add De la Hoya, Hatton and perhaps Mayweather. This is one of the best lineups in history with all the different weight classes. I mean, even many Mexicans are big fans of Manny b/c of the way he's taken it to the Mexican fighters.
Mayweather as talented as he is, will be known as stated by previous posts, that he evaded many fights that should have happened.
Though heavily favoured I'm sure, He might not even beat Juan Manuel so don't look past this fight. Marquez is thought by many hardcore as the best P4P and Floyd should have his hands full.

i love how all ya'll little mayweather groupies are looking past jm marquez..love it i tell ya

May 4, 2009  08:53 PM ET

Mayweather better fight Pacman.

May 4, 2009  09:50 PM ET

What do you mean by fight? He will get in the ring w/ Pacman, but he will not "fight"

May 4, 2009  09:55 PM ET

He will box, and he will beat Manny.

I think Juan Manuel Marquez will be pretty boys hardest battle to date. Rust from a long layoff in combination with a great counter puncher with incredible heart (possibly in his prime) that will be very motivated (victory = rematch with Pacquiao, which he wants desperately) will negate any weight issues. Mark my word he will not leave the ring unscathed. He might not want to fight again after a battle like that. But if he does win and wants to fight pacman I'm not going to pick against the pacman and have to eat crow like everyone always does when they pick manny to lose. Remember what a "sure thing" it was that De Lahoya would win?

Juan Marquez will go down early in the fight jus so anticipation can mount and Mayweather vs Manny can go at it.... Manny knocked hatton out in two rounds not even... So Mayweather will damage Marquez he may be chicken BUT he still is undefeated nd no one can take that away... Manny and Mayweather will fight if Mayweather wins it a BIG MONEY FIGHT why wont it happen... I say around Oct-Dec is when this fight will take place.... GOOD FIGHT TOO.....

Just wanna dedicate this to The Great Pacman of the Philippines....

From Kanye West Song Amazin:
-----------------
It's amazing, I'm the reason
Everybody fired up this evening
I'm exhausted, barely breathing
Holding on to what I believe in

No matter what you'll never take that from me
My reign is as far as your eyes can see

It's amazin', so amazin', so amazin', so amazin'

------------------------

I'm a monster, I'm a maven
I know this world is changin'
Never gave in, never gave up
I'm the only thing I'm afraid of

No matter what you'll never take that from me
My reign is as far as your eyes can see

It's amazin', so amazin', so amazin', so amazin'

Congrats to Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao

Juan Marquez and Mayweather were good fighters/boxers.

Juan Marquez was down twice on the 1st round when he fought PacMan and came back and finishes the fight.

Mayweather, I would like to see him fight Juan Marquez face to face. He needs to slow down. The funs would like to see actions not marathon.

This is not going to be an easy fight for both fighters. Mayweather???s record now is 39 ??? 0, 25 KO???s. JM record is 50-4-1, 37 KO???s.

For the National Fist of the Philippines - PacMan ??? Congratulation to you.
