NFL  > New York Giants  > Eli's Red Zone Weapons

Hixon, Toomer and Steve Smith are strong possession WR's but the Giants are going to need one of them to step up and be more productive in the red zone. Hakeem Nicks is a physical WR, but a rookies, a rookies, a rookie and he's only 6'1. Someone needs to help ELI, or the Giants are going to be kicking a lot of FG's this year.

ok guy hate to burst your bubble but toomer is not playing in this town again (at least not in blue) also they drafted the 6'6 guy form col poly and a tightend in travis beckum watch some youtube of these guys. Well be ok fellow giant fan just wiat and see. jerry knows what he is doing

I agree with Javon. If the "rookies, a rookies, a rookie" can give production... like lets say 50 catches in the 600-700 yrds region. Plus they have Barden (the 6'6'' guy) for the red zone TDs). Its not the best situation i.e. no clear no 1 reciever, but its not a horrible situation by far. The stable of recievers the Giants now have is a stable that many teams would love to have. The eagles are being looked at as a strong contender because of how the drafted and approached free agency. They are going in with a 2nd yr WR, a rookie and Kevin curtis (and a rookie TE). Almost similar situation.

Lastly... good luck Amani... for whover you play for next because it wont be the Giants.

To take a quote from the Giants homepage "the Giants don't need a homerun hitter to score runs". Don't worry Chokeland, the Giants offense will be fine this season. People are obsessed with the "not having Plax or a #1 WR" topic. Let me ask this, did the Giants struggle when the put up 34 points against the Panthers in the only game that mattered down their final stretch? No Plax, no problem. Everybody said the same thing when Tiki left...and what happened the next season...umm SB champs, then they said the same thing after Strahan retired and Osi got hurt....umm NFC East Champs -12-4. It will be no different this season. What people don't get is that the Giants don't have superstars on their team and don't need them. The Giants have always had their young guys step up and this year it will be Boss, Steve Smith, and Ahmad Bradshaw. This year's draft class means squat for any team! Very few rookies ever have impact in year 1. The guys who will make the difference this year will be the draft class from 3 seasons ago. And if nothing else, who in the NFC East is better? The Eagles? I doubt it, they have nearly a rebuilt Defense, 2 of 5 new players on their O-Line and 2 fast, but far from star WR's in their offense. So they beat a beat-up Giants team last season and then went where? nowhere, as usual, but back to their couches come February. The G-Men will once again own the East for at least the next 3 seasons...prove me wrong!

Agree with you Gmanji. Well put. Good to see a fellow GIANTS fan in south jersey. GO BIG BLUE!!!

Barden can serve as a big target near the endzone, along with Beckum and Boss. But either way, you have one thing your missing in this thread: the Giants don't need a big red zone receiver yet. They are sitting on an oil reserve named BRANDON JACOBS. The running game lost Derrick Ward, yet got Danny Ware and Andre Brown to make up one of the top 3 combos in the league. Let the young guys develop this year with Eli. The G-Men can go out and add another potent receiver next year, maybe through the draft or via a trade with Cleveland or Arizona. No need to worry right now. Smith, Boss, Beckum, Hixon, Nicks, and Barden make up a nice young core.

Barden had 50 touchdowns at cal poly. This guy will be the best red zone receiver in the nfl.Plaxico who?No worries.Plus Beckum, this guy runs routes like a receiver.

while we are on the subject how do yout think the giants starting line up of receevers will be.

Im thinking hixon nicks smith super mario and moss a the bust. what order or you guys thinking

May 5, 2009  08:52 PM ET

I think it could very well end up being Nicks, Barden, and Smith. Nicks at #1 Barden at #2 and Smith in the slot. Hixon is not a starting caliber receiver period.

If the two young guys can get in there and give the needed production, what your saying would be good because it would put hixon back on special teams where he is the most effective. If he develops, I could see Manningham in the starting lineup mix. maybe Nicks, manningham smith. Barden can come in inside the 20.

Kevin Boss is a proven red zone target. The additions of Barden and Beckum will be big in the red zone as well. However, remember that our running game is our biggest red zone threat. We definitely run more than we pass in the redzone.

exactly what' im talking about

I think hixon can be a real good number 2 guys. Cant remember if it was the ravens or steelers game but we he had over 100 yards in one half. Hes got speed heart and is a good charecter guy. I just think asking him to take plex spot in those cold weather games was alot. but who knows maybe super mario will beat him out. of kevin g. is not creative this year he will not have success. it does not take a whole lot of thought to just chunk it up to a 6'6 monster in plex. but he will have to utilize the h back position ( something i have not seen him do yet) barden and some young talent to pull this off. He has to change the play book period

May 11, 2009  06:39 AM ET

I think Hixon can be a good receiver, but with Smith, Hicks and Manningham (and Barden in red-zone situations) I'd rather see Hixon back in the return game. The field postion that he gets on returns is invaluble and was much missed in the end of the season.

May 21, 2009  08:39 PM ET

Smith is going to be the guy to step it up this year. He is the new Toomer. Hicks will be productive by mid season. Eli however, needs to also step in up by playing like he did in the playoffs of his SuperBowl MVP run. no more up and down, he's gotta be solid.

I think that they Giants showed good patience in their draft of receivers. Hicks and Barden could be studs this year, but I am only looking at 60 catches between the two. I would still like the Giants to sign a veteran like Marvin Harrison. I wouldnt expect him to be the huge play maker that he has been throughout his career, but to mentor the young receivers. The running game is the red zone is always a toss up with the Giants. It all depends on the health of Jacobs. They have the blocking, but Ware, Bradshaw and Brown will have to step up. Jacobs will have a shorter career due to his size and that he has to be tackled below the knees. They will have to solidify a red zone reveiver. Barden will almost have to command double coverage due to his size alone which should open up the TE and the slot.

I liked the recieving additions via the draft. Smith is the best WR on the team. We still need a proven WR. I would still look to pick up a WR before the season.to provide an ovide an effective offense. Look at the last few games last year. I believe we still need to obtain a proven WR like Edwards. It's expecting too much to assume that the rookies will rovide enough offense to stop teams from putting 8 guys in the box. Hixon is not a starting WR. Rookies need to be signed quickly. We need to work the Wrs hard during the preseason.

I think that if any 2 rookie receivers can contribute significantly in their first season it's Nicks and Barden. Scouts said Nicks played in a pro style offense in college and has probably already run most of the routes he'll see with the Giants. Barden has a half foot! height advantage over most corners and he is athletic with good hands. Also, Beckum should be a force to be reckoned with.

The giants don't have a clear cut No.1 but does it matter? It's up to Kevin Gilbride to put in a system that takes advantage of the skills of everyone on the Offense
