I was looking up such ancient history of Paolo Maldini in light of his upcoming retirement and was struck by the pure length of his career with a single team. He started as a youth club player for Milan at age 10, made his debut at age sixteen in 1985(!) and is finally playing his last year for the team at age 40 in 2009, having never played for any team other than AC Milan.

This got me to thinking of certain players who are so strongly attached to a single team that you can't think of them without immediately thinking of the team, or vice versa. Players who immediately come to mind are Maldini for AC Milan or Totti for AS Roma.

Who are the truly iconic players for the teams you support? The ones who immediately come to mind when you think over the entire history of the club you support, not just the one who comes to mind when you think of the current season?
