NFL  > New York Giants  > Holes in the secondary not addressed in the draft!!!!!!!!!!
May 19, 2009, 09:16 AM
I trust in Jerry. That said, what happened with getting Safety help in the draft, or in FA? Just curious.... Right now, the Blue have CC Brown, Michael Johnson and Kenny Phillips in the rotation...

MJ and CC don't excatly inspire confidence in me, and where is KP in is developmental curve? Why was RW McQuarters not resigned as a safety when he played well there for added depth?

Steve Cargile and Rashad Sha'reff? The first guy is a 3yr pro that went to Columbia the latter went to Central Florida and is a rookie.... that went undrafted, not that I have a problem with it, but you get my drift. Cargile could not even stick in Denver where the secondary was horrible.

We need some safety help!

G'men have a good young secondary. Top picks with solid college pedigree. Ross, Phillips, Webster & Thomas. Texas, Miami, LSU & USC? Pretty good credentials. They could be best secondary for 5 - 6 years. Give them a chance. With the great pass rush they should do even better. Will they get beat? Sure they all do sometimes.

Mason i have have to be honest with you. Your points in all of these blogs seem to be more hyped opinions than any actual football knowledge. MJ has proven to be a good (not great) safety. Kenny Phillips and his learning curve??? a lot of people seem to think he is going to have a breakout year. The problem is that you want him to be an Ed Reed or brian Dawkins from thier best year... but you want him to be that now!!! Ross is on track to be a future Pro bowler as well as Webster. Thats just the starting lineup!!! Sam Madison has been mentoring these guys and he is still there too. I think the secondary is very good. denver proved that you cant win a defensive battle with 2 shut down corners. so there is no reason for a Ginats fan to think we need big name shut down corners.

Dunes explains it very well. Please respsond with something of substance.

Get over the big schools, they don't mean anything, time has proven that, though Miami seems to have a special knack for creating NFL studs at LB and S. Besides, Ross, Webster and Thomas are all corners, and Dockery is a solid 4th corner. My concern was about the backup safety positions.

1. This section is about posting your opinions, in case you did not notice. I tend to write the way I want things to be read, and communicate the way I think about things.

2. As for wanting Ed Reed out of all the safeties? Not my point at all, nor do I expect that. I was commenting about a lack of depth at the S position and the fact that it could have been upgraded, or something to that effect. Everything I stated was factual, and yes I realize how many undrafted rookies become stars. Drew Pearson comes to mind, as does Antonio Pierce, Antonio Gates, Rod Smith, etc... I was stating the point that the position could have been upgraded, and maybe should have, but then again, last time I checked, S is a position that can be ovrlooked with good D-line, LB and CB play.

3. Actually, the reason Denver's D stinks is because they can't rush the passer or stop the run. It's a proven fact that even the best corners in the world can't be great without a solid front 7.

4. Listen, speaking of football knowledge, go play pattycake with someone, okay Jr.? Listen, let me quote you from something you wrote on April 24th "The game plan is to run the ball, control the clock and get into the red zone." You like to state the obvious don't you, and play it safe? Listen, people that have an opinion are the ones that stir the pot. Football knowledge? Um, I don't know who you are, but none of your comments inspire me to be awed by your knowledge, or at least your deluded perception of "football knowledge."

Also, I am not egocentric or immature to the point of calling myself "Superman." Grow up. Just because you are in NY does not mean you know everything. The world is a big place, and NY is not the friggin capital. Besides, you were actually pining for Bey in the draft. How deluded could you be? Football knowledge? Give me a break, you probably think Chris Berman is a football God.

"We"?

Another friggin Jerry's Kid who thinks he works for the team and can call a professional sports team "we".

you know what... your right. I do state the obvious. playing safe or what they call "smart" football to me is what wins games. FYI- Myself and another person wanted hicks and Barden in the draft. Maybe we were thinking obvious picks and playing it safe... but those are the pcisk the G-en made (which i do not think is because of the blog. But I will leave you alone to have your opinions since this (meaning me) "egocentrical" person obviously touched a nerve on a very humble individual.

The Giants secondary is fine. No need to dive off the deep end.

May 20, 2009  11:36 AM ET

Michael Johnson is a pretty good safety, and I think CC will do well in rotation. I know Sha'reef is an undrafted rookie bt he has impressed so far as well. Also, maybe DeAndre Wright or Stoney Woodson makes the team as a safety, its possible. But overall, I think Kenny takes a big step this year and Michael Johnson plays solid, which will work out fine. The entire secondary unit will mature as a whole and develop into one of the top units in the league.

Definitely could've been beneficial. But, by a money standpoint, it wouldn't have worked he cost a big amount which we didnt have to give. The other additions the Giants made were smarter, although I think we overpaid some for Canty.

Actually, just realized it myself. Not my intent at all... typically I always try to keep it separate... My bad.

That is not what I was referring to. I was referring to the fact your statement was bland, and was pretty bvious as that is every team's goal. There was nothing original about it.

Te Giants O is predicated on run and play-action passing deep, with running to close out the game, with the red-zone identity in flux mainly because of Gilbride's inability to stick to a plan in the red zone.

This notion of "the Giants need Plaxico" or something like that is a bunch of you know what... quick... what is the average height and weight of Pro Bowl receivers over the last 10 years? 20? 30?

June 17, 2009  03:59 PM ET

i would of liked the Giants to pick a safery early in the draft but are very happy with the offensive players drafted. KP will have a big year and MJ will continue to improve his play. The long passs has hurt us in the last few years. KP will make a big differences on deep plays. GO GIANTS!!!

June 19, 2009  11:35 AM ET

The Giants secondary is young and unproven, but we'll be OK - the unit can grow together. We have a solid front line and can bring the heat, so the secondary should be ok. Remember the Giants are a solid team and we don't need a Pro-bowler at every position the Cowboys tried that and it didn't work. Just give the young guys a chance.

June 23, 2009  09:44 AM ET

I think any deficiencies the Giants have among their safeties will be covered up by that disgusting D-line they have. The only time the safeties got exposed last year was on the deep ball, and I don't anticipate teams having enough time to get a deep ball off this year. The Giants had a 3 man rotation last year with Michael Johnson, Butler, and Kenny Phillips. Giving KP more playing time this year will actually make the unit play a lot better, since we all know Butler doesn't have the talent or skill that KP has. Besides, they are stacked at CB. Corey Webster was a pro-bowl snub last year, and Aaron Ross is developing well.

June 25, 2009  07:17 AM ET

What are you guys talking about our secondary is just fine Webster is solid Thomas and Ross can hold their own Michale Johnson and Kenny Philips will be great togheher no need to panic... we will win the SUPERBOWL IN 09
