NFL  > New Orleans Saints  > Drew Brees Admits Pierre Thomas is Saints No. 1 Running Back! Does it Matter........
June 1, 2009, 09:13 PM
A few days ago Drew Brees made one of his usual appearances on WWL's Sports Talk with Bobby Hebert to help promote his concert for charity, "The Domino Effect" held this past Saturday at the New Orleans Arena. Not surprisingly, the talk didn't just center around Drew's music benefit. The guys naturally discussed the team, the off-season and what to expect next season.

Drew Brees:
"I think that Pierre is our number one back and can do the job and now, you know, I feel like Reggie can be able to step in and do a great job and whoever our number three guys is at this point we don't know...but certainly I think Pierre Thomas is the total package."

So that's it. Many of you fans have been agonizing for months over who should, could and will be the main back for the Saints in 2009 and we've finally got our answer. No more questioning or speculating. Drew has ended it.

I think he hit the nail on the head with the that comment. But there are those Reggie fans out there.......

How about that and ain't that something..........hahahahahaha

Reggie is a bust. Go back to Cali and cry to Kim, "I don't know why they think I'm not the greatest running back just because I can't run between the tackles."

June 2, 2009  03:23 PM ET

I do not believe Reggie is a bust at all. If used correctly (not as the featured back) I believe he will have a great year. To me, Reggie is more of a receiver than a prototypical running back. He's much more effective when he gets the ball in space and makes guys miss. He's also an all pro punt returner. If he stays healthy this year, he'll make believers out of alot of people. He's just not a between the tackles running back but swing the ball to him out of the back field and watch him score.......

June 2, 2009  06:40 PM ET

Reggie is no bust, he still has value as stated in the post above !

June 2, 2009  10:08 PM ET

Reggie rocks...and so does Pierre Thomas!! This is our year. Good d and a killer offense. WHO DAT WHO DAT!

June 2, 2009  10:59 PM ET

Reggie is not a true running back, He is a flanker playing running back.
He is not a #1 ball carrier. You option Reggie the ball or pitch it left pitch it right.
He will nevver be a power running back up the middle.

June 2, 2009  11:01 PM ET

Plus there is not doubt that Pierre is a stronger urnner than Bush with his low base. You can't forget that Reggie is a heck of a special teams player as well KR/PR.

June 3, 2009  12:41 AM ET

Reggie had flashes of greatness, but thats it, flashes. he to was over hyped, thanks ESPN!!! he's good but since he was bitten by the injury bug, his career is all downhill from here. hey Kim, i'll be waiting baby. lol

June 3, 2009  12:58 AM ET

again this is the qb saying that pierre is the number one back not payton when he says it then i'll believe it till then its up for grabs ... i see alot of new orleans fans haten on reggie but you asses was like that when we went to the nfc championship was you ???????

June 3, 2009  02:35 AM ET

I say this being a Deuce Mcallister fan and a nola saints fan, reggie bush is one of the most electrifying players wearing a halo right now. I agree he isn't the banger deuce was and pierre could be, but how many of us get chills and fire up as soon as its 4th down and reggie comes jogging ontob the field throwin his hands up, pumplin the crowd up, just waitin for that one special block to happen and he takes the punt for 6?! Or how about when the boy recklessly throws himself n2 a summersault to cross the goal line after a 45 yard swing pass taken to the house. Last year pking wrote about reggie being on pace to score 88 touchdowns n the length of his career for us, deuce has something around 52 and he leads the list. Reggie is an amazing athlete who poses a homerun threat with every touch. Hey mr.payon! How bout a little more of the strong I formations with reggie? Sweeps and pitches to the strong side will force the d to go thru an ol,te, and fb just to get to reggie! Make his 10 to 15 touches a game a numbers game put the house on it, make it clear ur commin and they have to try and stop it!
All that being said reggie stays healthy hell score a lot of points this year, and personaly I don't care how the boy gets em as long as he's pumping up the crowd and rising to the occasion.do ur thing babeh, just hold on to the damn ball!

June 3, 2009  08:46 AM ET

What position did we draft Reggie as? Running back. Let's look at his stats playing in the NFL not against the PAC 10. 2006 565 yards, 2007 581 yards, 2008 404 yards. Anyone try to argue that a running back with these types of stats should have a $52.5 million dollar contract and be on every other NFL commercial. Absolutely ridiculous. Please people stop buying into the media hype. Oh, and this is the grid iron not the summer olympics so I can care less how many cartwheels the guy does to try to get into the end zone.

Reggie Bush is an amazing and integral part of the Saints team, and I'm damn glad we have him. Pierre is a between-the-tackles runner with a bit of jig and jive in his step that will complement Reggie nicely, even if it means he gets more running carries. Regardless, the two of them together is a great backfield. Now, if we can only get Sean to call run plays and the line to block on 3rd and short...

BUT YOU REGGIE FANS WOULD KNOW MORE ABOUT HIS PERFORMANCE THAN ONCE QUARTERBACK.......GIVE ME SOME HIP BOOTS, IT'S REALLY GETTING REALLY DEEP.

I know that there are many Reggie fans out there. They can't get the days of USC and the Hiesman Trophy Winner out of there head. He is not the player anymore. This is National Football League, not the NCAA. almost anyone can be a good player the NCAA.

I do not give "ANY STOCK" in the Hiesman. It used to be awarded to the best player of the year. Now it's more hype.

Okay, I have a question:

WHO WAS THE LAST HIESMAS TROPHY WINNER TO COME OUT AND REALLY CONTRIBUTE? AND DON'T SAY CARSON PALMER. YOU WOULD REALLY HAVE TO GO BACK A REALLY LONG TIME ANSWER THIS QUESTION.

Ok so reggie is not the number one back. That doesnt mean anything. He is a play maker, like i said before on other threads hes an awsome punt returner he lead the league in PR TDs and he missed half the season. Thats talent

June 5, 2009  12:46 AM ET

Just because he didnt back up all the hype alot of yal think he sucks. Which is not true. He scores touchdowns. Maybe not by running them all the time but a TD is a TD. He might not be the #1 back but he doesnt suck, Hes awsome. GO SAINTS

It awazes me how many people can be snowballed by the media into thinking Bush is great. I bet you never miss an episode of the Kardashians. Pierre complimenting Reggie. What kind of bs is that. Pierre has taken up the challenge and will show Reggie how an NFL running back is suppose to play the game. I am hoping Pierre steps up like Duece did for us when Ricky Williams ended up being a bust for us. Even Ricky broke over a thousand yards with the Saints. Reggie can barely get half a grand. Give me some facts people to prove that Reggie has what it takes to be our back. Also, I'm am tired of hearing people say Payton and the coaching staff are not utilizing him correctly. Why can a no name like Pierre step in under the same conditions and put up great numbers.

June 5, 2009  01:39 PM ET

In 2006 the Saints had success with their running game because they had Deuce pounding the ball inside and Reggie out in space. If Pierre Thomas can be that bruiser inside, they can duplicate that success this year. IMO it's really a non-issue who is the "number one" back. Reggie gets in trouble when he and Sean Payton try to make him something he's not. Whether it is Pierre or someone else, get a pile driver in the backfield and start winning those close games, guys.

ok hes not a good HB, we all know that. But hes a good recieving back and punt returner. If he was a bust he wouldnt have broke that recieving record for most catches in an amount of time or somthing like that, he also wouldn have got the most PR TDs.

June 7, 2009  04:34 PM ET

To call Bush a bust is being short-sighted. A bust is someone who does not contribute to the team at all. Bush contritbutes, but not as a number one runner. He is great catching the ball out of the backfield and running in the open field. He is also a decent outside runner. He is great on special teams. The fact that the Saints drafted him so high and pay him so much is the front office's fault. I remember reading reports at the time that said he might not be able to produce like he did at USC. The front office gave into the hype and took him that high. If Thomas is a beast this year, he will probably expect a big pay increase. As a result, the Saints will be forced to make a decision and will probably trade or releast Bush.

I agree this isnt the olympics man, but the boy is a cold piece of work in open space. i say line em up strong eye pull browns big ass and dare the d to stop em.
