NFL  > Chicago Bears  > How Many WR's will the Bears have on the roster?
June 5, 2009, 04:00 PM
How many Wide Receivers will the Bears have on their roster this year, these are the players who have been participating in OTA's..

Devin Aromashodu, Earl Bennett, John Broussard, Rashied Davis, Devin Hester, Juaquin Iglesias, Derek Kinder, Johnny Knox, Eric Peterman, Brandon Rideau

I believe five of these people plus a verteran will be on the roster opening night against the Pack...This is who I think will make it.

Devin Hester
Juaquin Iglesias
Johnny Knox
Brandon Rideau
Earl Bennett

Bennett survives, because of his Cutler ties...Rashied Davis will be the odd man WHEN they sign a veteran.

Three teams are believed to be serious enough in considering Burress for the 2009 season that they have contacted his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, to inquire about his legal status: The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Chicago Bears and the New York Jets.

I read the article...let's just wait and see...we will know it ten days...

June 5, 2009  07:32 PM ET

i agree, we need to see how everything unfolds. just read an article saying plax's attorney trying to postpone trial after the season to allow him to play in 09...let's see.

June 5, 2009  08:04 PM ET

Well we cannot say J.A. isn't trying. I think personally this has been J.A. best year as a G.M. and if we go into the season with the W.R. we have in camp, from what I've been reading Jay is defiantly making the W.R.'s better.

Citing a trusted source, ESPN's Chris Mortensen says it's "amazing" how much better the Bears' receivers have looked with Jay Cutler at QB so far.

It's only spring and Devin Hester, Greg Olsen, and Earl Bennett haven't taken a single hit, but the news is encouraging. Chicago's receiver corps will have a far easier time getting the ball from Cutler and his career 62.5% completion rate than they did from Kyle Orton (55.3%) or Rex Grossman (54.2%). I kind of agree with you, that he has done more this year that ever before...but his job was on the line, and he has to do something...Plax is from my local area, and the deal that they offered him was 2 months in jail...and he turned it down, he needs to re-evalute his situation, to get 2 months, you would only serve three weeks, if you know how to act...he could serve those couple of weeks before training camp starts...but that is his decision...now if he postpones his trial until afer the season, Goodell is not going to let him play, untill his legal situation is resolved...Plax do this litte time, and get back to your life...you will be allowed to play in the NFL again...your life is more important than football.

June 5, 2009  11:18 PM ET

I agree don't know why Plax. didn't take the plea. He might have even been able to serve his time in jail around his practices with a new team. Actually as far as J.A. Job his hands have been tied by the McCaskey's, It's not J.A. that's tight its Michael McCaskey to be exact, I think Virginia was the one that said do want needs to be done this year an kinda pulled rank on Michael.

If any Bears fans ever want to learn the whole history of the Bears and the "good ole days".. get Jeff Davis book "Papa Bear"... its the best book on Bears and has chapters on all the financial stuff if that interests you (including helping bail out the Packers when they hit a real bad time) Yes that's right Ole Papa Bear himself saved the Packers. Another interesting point in the book was: "Halas never liked the McCaskey's and never wanted them to have their claws into team, and despite Halas' deathbed wish of "anyone but Mike".. Mike McCaskey ends up running team.. until he screwed up so bad even his mom "Virginia" had to boot him.

June 5, 2009  11:26 PM ET

Another sad fact in the book is that the Bears will be sold soon just like the Rams, Uncle Sam always wins and Mckenna and Ryan will be owning the bears outright soon., when the $400 mill tax bill comes due on the GST trust.

June 5, 2009  11:55 PM ET

Well since the Bears have contacted Burress agent about his availability, it must O.K. with the higher ups...I think this is a good move, and have blogged this for a while...the fact that we have opened up a dialogue, should put us in the best position to sign him, when he is able to play...if he is not able to play, what harm did it cause...NONE...I am just guessing this, but I think he will come to his senses, and do his time after the season is over if Goodell approves it, or bite the bullet and just get it over with...their would be presidence for Burress to do his time after the season...Just like Jamall Lewis did, now Lewis did have to serve a four game suspension, but he plead guilt to a felony, when Burress would have had his plead down to a misdameanor...With him on the field, they will have to a safety on top for him, giving all of our young receivers one-on-one coverage and a true opportunity to develop.

June 6, 2009  08:20 AM ET

I also think allot teams may underestimate our W.R. corps this year and if they do they'll get a big surprise. Everyone is saying that Cutler has no weapons Blah Blah Blah. I hope the Bears go with Hester, Bennett, Iglesias, Rideau and Knox. I also see them keeping Kinder and Peterman for development, the jury is still out on sir drop allot Davis. I also hope they keep Kellen Davis around for another year to see what he can do, although the acquisition of Gaines could hurt his chances to stay.

June 6, 2009  08:32 PM ET

What the hell fellas? Why would you want burress? Id say you'd be better off making a run for Boldin.

June 6, 2009  09:14 PM ET

Bolden is out of our range at this point, Arizona wants a first round draft choice and we traded ours to Denver for Cutler.

A guy like boldin would be an instant improvement for the bears. By the way, how is Lloyd during for you guys? He made some amazing catches with the Niners but never became a consistent receiver.

June 6, 2009  10:27 PM ET

"He made some amazing catches with the Niners but never became a consistent receiver". You hit the nail on the head with that phrase. He was released this year and has not been resigned by anyone yet.
I am anxious to see how the Brandon Marshall thing plays out in Denver, He's asking for a new deal this year and his contract is due up next year.
I know Bolden would really help us out this year but Arizona really doesn't want to let him go so they are asking a kings ransom for him.

I like Brandon Marshall too, but I think it is a dream...with no CBA for the 2010, you can expect the Broncos to use one of their two Franchise tags on him...unless he gets released, we do not have a chance...even if they do not franchsie tag him, their is no free agency...their will only be "restricted Free agency, giving the Broncos the chance to match the offer...and this Restricted free agency is only available to non-playoff teams.

I don't have the slightest worry about Chicago's receiving corps. A game manager in Orton threw for 2900 yds on a 13 game season (19th), just over the league average. He was spread so far between receivers and Forte, he never had a consistent target. Add a QB, like we have, who can deliver the ball, you will have a more consistent corps. I also think the number of players with receptions will drop too. You wont be seeing 5 receivers with 20 -50 catches this season, it will be more like 2 with 80 and above and the rest contributing where they can.

Lastly, can you ever remember a time where we actually planned a pass game around one or two players? Me neither. I think it is due to the lack of good passers this team has had. Granted, I know Chicago has never had a break out WR, but it never helps having; could have been's throwing to them throughout the years.

Suppose to say 15 game season. But more like 14 and half, but you get the point. He got injured and wasn't healthy, directly after he returned, and it showed in his play.

Kyle Orton is a journeyman man QB, and he played like one...we are the only team in the NFL where the QB did not complete a pass that traveled in the air 35 yards..J.A. noticed that, and went and got Cutler...now they need a go to WR, and he might not get the stats of a go to, but he will cause single coverage for the backs, Tight ends, and speedsters that we have...Cutler could throw 5000 yards this season...they tell you that they are a run team, I do not think so, this is now a pass team, and we are one peice short...Now that it is out in the open that we are interested in Plaxico Burress, he must be signed, even is he has to miss a few games...this team has Super Bowl capabilites...if they do not deliver something, we could see a new G.M. and Head Coach...sign Burress, and then sign either Marvin Harrison or Matt Jones, which ever you can get the best deal with, and this team could win 14 games...Winning changes everything, and peoples memories go blank when you win...I like our receiving core, but I am not ready to DEPEND on them yet, if we sign a couple vets and the young guys perform...you release the vet

If Orton could pass for 2,972 yards last season with our W.R.'s Surely a strong armed capable Q.B. like Cutler should be able to produce at least 3,500+ with our current W.R. corps. With our Run first philosophy I am pretty sure Cutler will not have the 4,526 yards he had last year but he shouldn't half to have that kind of yardage as long as our running game is succeeding and our Defense is holding opponents to 21 or fewer p.p.g. I believe our W.R. corps will be fine with Cutler throwing the rock, and we have a good balanced attack.
That being said I think a #1 veteran W.R. would be more of a luxury than a necessity, could we use one, sure, do we absolutely need one to win, no.

June 7, 2009  12:44 PM ET

Brandon Marshall is going to be avail the way McDaniels is selling away the best players on the Broncos for discount prices.

If they have Marshall, Bears will be deadlier offensively. Go Bearcos.

We have no receiver who can not be covered one on one, that means when the ball is thrown, they have to fight for the ball in the air...we are too small to play that kind of ball and succeed...with Burress drawing a double team every play, this will allow the Speed of Hester & Knox to shine...having two speedsters on the field will allow us to get at least 6 cheap Touchdown's this year, where one of these guys spins and is gone...they will not be caught from behind, and could give us a extra 500 yards passing just for speed...with Burress doubled every play (career average 15.5 yards a catch) should allow Olsen to have a Pro Bowl season, since he will get single coverage, and NO safety can cover him, he is too big, and too fast...and you may be right, that we do not need a veteran to win...but we need a veteran to have home field advantage, and since that is where a owners money is in the playoffs, that is J.A.'s job...and believe me, if he can he will, he is not on the hotseat this year...him and Lovie Smith are on the coals.
