NFL  > Chicago Bears  > Plaxico to Chicago...
June 12, 2009, 07:20 PM
The Bears are one team trying to get Plaxico. Will the Bears bring him in? Will they give up good money to get Plax. Or will they let it go.
June 12, 2009  07:49 PM ET

They are going to let him go...I do not agree with the decision, but it's J.A.'s job that is on the line

June 12, 2009  08:13 PM ET

I wish the Bears would take a chance on Matt Jones. In the 2008 season he caught 65 passes for 761 yards thats impressive considering he only played like 11 or 12 games. If you are willing to take a chance on Plax you should be willing to take a chance on Jones he has a lot of talent also.

June 12, 2009  08:26 PM ET

As sure as they cried about not having a franchise QB, they will use the excuse, that we could not get a veteran WR...this excuse does not fly with me...if the talent they put on the field can't win, their must be some changes on how the team runs...with the exception of Orlando Pace, the Bears have not signed a free agent who start in years...as long as we play spectator to free agency, you can not get better...we had to trade a lot of picks to get a franchise QB...is this suppose to appease the fans...with the amount of money that this team has under the salary cap, if this team does not win...Phillips, Angelo, Smith. Babich, Turner you have to go...this is your last chance...

June 12, 2009  10:56 PM ET

I for one, am very pleased with the Bears off season activity this year it isn't everyday or year or decade for that fact that a team gets a proven pro-bowl Q.B. and L.T. Yes Pace is older but still better at his age than what we had last few years. While I wouldn't mind a veteran W.R. I really think we'll be fine with our W.R. corps, Jay Cutler will make our receivers better as we have already seen from how successful Eddie Royal and Brandon Marshall has been in Denver, before someone comes here blasting about this statement I AM NOT SAYING Chicago's receivers are better or maybe not even equal this we will have wait and see until the season is underway but I will say Jay had something to do with their success anyone who says otherwise is just kidding themselves Jay was their Q.B. and delivered the ball to them on time and accurately. Some of Eddie Royal success was due to him but he also had Jay throwing him the ball, and now Jay is throwing to Chicago's receivers so E=MC2.

Watch some of last years OTA's with Orton throwing the ball, then compare them to this years with Jay throwing the ball HUGE difference even the most inexperienced bystander can tell the difference between the two, or should I say hear the difference.

Jay also is improving the corner backs play reason being last year under Orton corner backs played off the receivers by a good 5 steps and once the ball was in the air the corner backs could make up the distance because of the velocity at which Orton threw. Now with Jay throwing and with more velocity and accuracy our corner are learning to play tighter coverage because they no longer can make up the 5 steps they could with Orton.

June 12, 2009  11:51 PM ET

The below list was hurried and may have errors but the the main point remains the same, and that is 80-90% of these receivers had top Q.B.'s delivering the ball, Top Q.B.'s and top W.R.'s goes hand in hand, only a select few W.R.'s make it without a top Q.B. delivering the ball.

This is what I am saying...last year we had no QB or WR to throw to...this year we have no WR to throw to...each one of these guys is very small in stature, and will get jammed at the line every play...none are strong enough to fight threw it and run a route, without disrupting the timing...do not get me wrong, I want the Bears to win so bad, I can taste it...but I have to call a spade a spade...this team is about to pay the price for being a spectator during free agency...with the rules chaging after this season, we have what we have for at least two seasons...our only improvement will be through the draft...until a new CBA is agreed upon...I hope we are O.K....but Cutler can not throw it and catch it...I do not feel comfortable with the Bears WR's as they are now...when you best receiver is your back up tight end (6 TD's) this could be a long season...I am not a A Jerry Angelo fan, I believe he has done more harm that good...for every one he got right (Cutler), their have been four that he got wrong (Benson, C. Harris, M. Columbo, Jones) This team has winning talent but no depth, no experienced WR's...I do not feel good about this, but I am hoping tht we can get some depth, and add a WR...but it does not look good...we just look stupid with the salary cap money left, and we refuse to pay anybody...I could go on and on...Jerry Angelo has to go...his job is the roster, and he has failed, please fire him now, and bring in somebody that wants to win...I am so frustrated with Jerry Angelo...who wants one of the best QB's in the league, with nobody to throw to...free agency and salary cap are suppose to make it possiblwe for EVERY team to have a chance to win...we can not compete with other teams that want to win, as long as Jerry Angelo is he GM...his track record has proved that, until I see different...he has to go...

June 13, 2009  02:28 AM ET

YOu have to ask yourself, do we want a Coke head or do we want a self-mutilator?

They would be better than what we have...Jerry Angelo has got to go...his actions during free agency have been un-acceptable

Duce, your starting to talk ridiculously, again. The Bears haven't even played a pre-season game and you are writing off all the work done this off season and draft, already.

3 of the 5 WR haven't even caught a pass and you are trying to describe how they "will" play. Come on man, get real. Steve Smith is the same height and weight, and has been performing and "running through" jams his entire career. Same could be said for Derek Mason, Hinez Ward, Santana Moss, Greg Jennings, Eddie Royal, or in other words all top end receivers.

Besides, the rest of your rant goes on about not spending our money, but yet why would we sign Plax when nothing has been finalized in his court hearings. Now that they are pushed back to Sept, that would be a foolish gamble to take. You shot down the Matt Jones prospect, and Boldin, as you know, cost too much for us to give! Wayne, is way too old, and is asking way too much for what he will bring to the table.

There has been more than enough shuffling this off season, and for one, it has shown a side of Jerry that has RARELY, if ever, been seen. Let this team develop, and grow from here. If we land a top end FA WR great, if not, it's not like any one of these kid could shine through the "criticism" of being too small.

Cutler + Plaxico? That's a whole lotta ego goin' on...

June 13, 2009  11:44 AM ET

bgduece said: "when you best receiver is your back up tight end (6 TD's) this could be a long season." first of all Clark was brought in mostly in goal line situations so the 6 td thing is a bit deceaving. Olsen is better than Clark, that's why he starts over him. secondly, as a previous poster on here put, we haven't even seen the rookies so how do we know what they can do? Bennett played with Cutler at Vandy, so he has a history with him. he didn't play last year because they had vets like Booker ahead of him and took his development too slow. it won't be that way this year, because it didn't work and they are gone. this offseason isn't over and the Bears still might add a Plexico or someone to help shore up an area that needs help-if it needs help. This whole Cutler thing will blow up in Angelo's face if the Bears WR's show they arn't the answer. so you can bet JA will be watching the OTA's very closely. they have cap room if an addition is needed.

June 13, 2009  11:45 AM ET

BMarsh is holding out in Denver maybe Bowlen and McDaniels will trade him J.A. could make a huge splash if he could land this one. We could give up Rashied Davis, Hunter Hillenmeyer, Jason McKie, Jamar Williams, Joey LaRocque, as a last resort Dez Clark or Kellen Davis.
We could either do a trade directly with Denver or through another team via a three way deal and could use combination's of players.
Out of the the choices available Plax, Jones or Marshall I would choose Marshall he already has some chemistry with Cutler and is the youngest of the three.

You make no sense...if we had participated in free agency over that last two years, we could have some depth, and a experienced WR..last year EVERYBODY told the Bears, you need a receiver and Angelo talked that physco babble, that we are happy with where we are...and for your information CLARK is the starting TE, and Olsen is the backup.

June 13, 2009  12:11 PM ET

We should not be in this situation...and Reggie Wayne is under contract to the Colts, we can not get him...but he will NEVER be available...you probaly meant Harrison...Now this physco babble about how they will play is fact...there is no GO TO receiver on this team...Let this team develop, you have been watching the Cubs to long...wait til next season...Now Steve Smith is one of the strongest WR in the game, very poor example, you can put Ward in that category, all the rest have have some form of a threat, as a receiver with them, and get single coverage...who is it threat on the Bears roster...I'm waiting...it is still very very quiet...there are not threats, except our tight ends...Hester is not a receiver, and is still a project...we do not have a #1 or #2 receiver...does pulling for your team mean that you are blind, or have to lie to himself, to beleive that they will acheive...for two years in a row, the Bears left the money in the bank, and paid the price with a losing record...be for real...just becasue we got Cutler, only means that if we put the proper components arounf him, he would be able to succeed...since that is Jerry Angelo's job, and in the overall picture he has failed...if you or I failed at our job...we would not have a job...come with some facts next time....

Olson is the starter

Ridiculous. NONE of this is fact!!! WHY? Because the season hasn't even started. Your entire POST is skeptical, WITH NO FACTS!You missed the entire point and just babbled again.

ALL those receivers that were mentioned are in the SAME category as ours. Their height and weight is identical. You can make excuses all you want, BUT THOSE ARE FACTS. Your assumption that they can't break jams, is garbage, you haven't even seen them play one snap against an opposing defense. Had you read my comment, it said 3 outta the 5 haven't even had a reception yet.

Who would you have rather signed, in last years FA pool? PLEASE, enlighten me, with all the choices we had 2 years ago.....CRICKETS. It was a blessing in hiding, that we didn't sign depth or a #1 WR, otherwise we wouldn't have had the resources to pull the trigger on Cutler this past off season. Not to mention, the bears didn't have a losing season 2 years in a row. I guess don't watch them, and just talk about them. We were 9-7 last year.

We went from a QB who gather 2900 yds, with this corps, and now added a pro bowler to the position. and you think we will remain constant. Ridiculous. Your assumptions are worse than your predictions.

Clark is the starter...the only time Olson starts is when the open with two tight ends.

Name ONE skilled player that we have signed as a free agent...you can not name one, cause there is not ONE...this is FACT...you must smoke the good stuff, to put Pro bowl receivers, and other players who have achieved 1000 yard season versus our Noobs...you should stop and slap yourself back into the real world...lol...you need to wake up, we had the same problem last year...but oh it is different now we got Cutler...I will believe that when you bring Shanhan too...WAKE UP...we could have Peyton Manning, and still be in the same position...pathetic offensive Coordinator, and no WR's...deal with them FACTS....

June 13, 2009  08:07 PM ET

Duece.... I gotta throw this in there just cause sometimes your cocky attitude needs it... ONE skilled player that we have signed as a free agent: Michael Gaines. I realize he is not a starter, but TE is still a skill position. Also your quote "with the exception of Orlando Pace, the Bears have not signed a free agent who start in years..." We signed Kevin Schaffer who started last year for the browns, and Pisa Tinoisamoa who has started the last few years with the Rams.

June 13, 2009  08:22 PM ET

We already had THREE tight ends on the roster, though they may be moving Kellen Davis to defense...but if that is that only answer that you can come up with...Michael Gaines...case closed
