As an unbiased outsider, it would appear that he pushed all his chips in the center of the table with the Cutler trade. If they at least make the conf title I'd say he's safe for sure. If they make the playoffs but lose early it's a crapshoot and he'll need some help from extenuating circumstances, i.e. injuries, other probles. Missing the playoffs will send Lovie and Angelo packing.

Jerry Angelo is in the last year of his contract the 2009 season.
Thanks for the idea GSH Bears 1

A savvy owner would not extend him before or during such a pivotal season in my humble opinion.

Your welcome for the idea, and I agree with osumountie except I believe as long as they make it to the playoffs he will get his contract extension, this has been his best year as a G.M.
Since he has everything to gain, and nothing to lose, he should go all out in trying to get home field advantage in the playoffs, to make the task achievable...with his current roster what are his chances...

So you are saying that a playoff berth saves him...I think for him to get an extension he must get to the NFC championship game...or at least get a first round bye, and host a playoff game.
It depends if the coach gets the axe too...he is under contract through 2010...so far arguments sake, lets says the coach goes too...Mike Shanahan, Bill Cowher would want both jobs...My preference would be to give it all to Mike Singletary, I am sure he has an out of his contract for the Bears...Charley Casserly...If Lovie survives, Bill Parcells, never stays anyhere long...and the chance to stick it to Jerry Jones might interest him...Floyd Reese...Since Singletary will most likely require some form of compensation, a former Bear might be the way to go...their are so many to choose from...list some names that you think might be available.

It's got to be Cowher or Shanahan over Singletary. I get the whole Singeltary/Chicago history and love but those are two SB winning coaches with impeccable resumes. If they joined the league today they'd both be top 10 coaches. The same cannot be said (yet) for Singletary.

Would they be willing to give Jon Gruden or maybe even Mike Holmgren a shot?
Very dependent on how this team plays. You can't fault the man if:
A) The players are there but injuries nag the team
B) Our secondary gives up games.
C) Bone head coaching- (Atl game last year)
A second round playoff spot will land him another year in Chicago. A bust of a season will and him on his back side, along 90/94.
Listen, McCaskey and Ted Phillips like this man, and agree with the moves he has made. There hasn't been a notion from them, that if these moves fail, that he would be out.

There is no way that you can justify giving this man a contract extension...in the real world, he could be fired for cause...if he would have participated in Free Agency, we would have depth, and he would have taken the air out of the balloon on his situation...If they do not win the NFC North then he was wrong as has to go...the roster is his responsibility, and if they do not win, he has to go...I do not want to hear injuries, bad calls, or poor coaching, Angelo has created an environment where none of the big names want to come to Chicago and play, and what is so sad about that is that Lovie Smith is the coach that most players in the NFL want to play for???
Depth? The Bears have 5 WR, they could even have 6 on the roster. Even if they had signed a FA WR, what if he was injured? You would have the same 5 or 6 we are looking at now.
They have last years O-line as well as the additions from FA. Not seeing a problem with depth there.
LB- Never has been a problem with them. TWO solid players in Briggs and Pisa. Add Urlaher in the mix and you have one of the best corps in the league.
CB and S, FS are the main concerns in my mind. While everyone is off bi tchign about the WR slot, it has been the most neglected positions on the field.
Seeing you don't EVER read the entire post, you would have seen I wrote; If the Bears dont make at least a second round playoff spot, he will be gone.
You only comment on my posts to try and 1 up me. Your annoying and your posts are becoming more and more ridiculous.
I guess you think the Packers GM should be fired because he didn't have depth in their Defense, which is why they were 6-10 last year, huh?

Are you a narcissist? and as far as trying to 1 up you...I could care less really what you think, because I do not find you that knowledgeable at all...No back to Angelo, he has created an environment that other star players will not even consider playing for the most storied franchise in NFL history, his BUDGET rosters and low ball offers to free agents is legendary...
The majority of his draft choices have been bust, just look at the 2005 draft the only one still on the roster is Rod Wilson, a special teams player...the only 1st round pick the has panned out would be Tommie Harris, and his injury situation puts a cloud over that...If he had done such a good job, he would have been offered a new contract...it makes no sense to ALWAYS offer a player a low ball contract...I hope this team goes 19-0 and wins it all, but that is unlikely. I have nothing personally against Angelo, I just think that his judgments have been poor, and there must be accountability, to the same level that he has held the players, those who could not perform were released or not offered contract extensions...for Ted Philips and Michael McCaskey to offer this man a new contract, would send a message that they are not intersected in winning, ad will continue to drive away the top names in the game.
Here is nice post I read about Angelo:
This is courtesy of a gut named bulldog76
Here we go...
This will be in two post...very detail...
Here we go...
Jerry's First Draft...2002
1. Marc Colombo, injury set him back 2 years, but he must be regarded as a failure in Chicago...He would be nice to have now, but did nothing for us while he was here other than flush Big Cat out of the building a year earlier than necessary
2. Roe Williams, BUST
3. Terrance Metcalf, He has started less than ten games in his six year career, in the third round we should not be drafting career backups, we should be drafting starters across the o-line.
4. Alex Brown, Great pick, Brown slipped in the draft because his motor was questioned, something GMs around the league are kicking themselves for still
5. Bobby Gray...Played a few years, was a big hitter, but couldn't cover... a fifth rounder, but shouldn't be considered a great pick nor a failure...
5. Bryan Knight, BUST
6. Adrian Peterson, Slipped because of a lack of speed, but has made a nice career on special teams...
6. Jamin Elliott, Never made the team, even though he outplayed David Terrell for two years in the preseason...no real loss on investment
6. Bryan Fletcher...Not sure why he stuck other places but not here, same as Elliott...
Jerry's Second Draft 2003
1a. Michael Haynes, BUST
1b. Rex Grossman, Needed a QB, but Rex has disappointed on the whole
2. Charles Tillman, Great
3. Lance Briggs, Great
4. Todd Johnson, Backup for a majority of his career, but a nice player
4. Ian Scott, Fell off the map once he left Chicago, but a nice player
5. Bobby Wade, BUST
5. Justin Gage, Traded up to get him and he sucked...BUST
5. Tron LaFavor, BUST
6. Joe Odom, Career backup...
6. Brock Forsey, No real investment made, but was not an NFL back
7. Bryan Anderson, never made the active roster
Continuation of last Post...
Jerry's Kids 2004
1. Tommie Harris, Great
2. Tank Johnson, Never understood this pick, why draft another DT, the year after drafting 2 other DTs...Tank never beat out Ian Scott, and was ultimately released for his multiple arrests...NOT A GOOD PICK
3. Bernard Berrian...Nice pick, we developed him and then let him go, so it may not be a bad draft pick, so much as a mismanaged contract situation when JA should have extended him on the cheap before his walk year
4. Vasher, GREAT
4. Joe, not a real contributor...released and resigned, fringe player
5. Claude Harriott...sucked
5. Craig Krenzel...wasted pick, the guy was terrible
7. Alfonso Marshall...never saw the field
2005...WORST DRAFT
1. Ced Benson, Mike Machok tells the story of how he bet Angelo dinner, that Benson would be a bust and Angelo will have to pay up on this one...Another first round bust for JA...Could have had Cadillac Williams, Jamal Brown, Derrick Johnson, DeMarcus Ware, Shawne Merriman as they were all rated tops at their position
2. Mark Bradley, hasn't done anything on the field...potential doesn't mean anything if he flops again this year...could have been Michael Roos, Odell Thurman, Khalif Barnes or any number of other players who slipped in that draft
4. Kyle Orton...Drafts a QB for the 3rd year in a row...unsolved mystery with Orton to this point.
5. Airese Currie...BUST
6. Chris Harris, Solid rookie year, benched the second season, traded in the third...not sure what went wrong with him...
7. Rod Wilson, a special teams contributor...
2006...the most confusing of all the drafts
2. Danieal Manning...Not sold on him yet...hasn't played well in run support appears lost most of the time in coverage
2. Devin Hester...Great
3. Dusty Dvoracek...I'm a fan, but hasn't been healthy since he got here
4. Jamar Williams...Drafted to replace Briggs...One problem, Briggs was resigned to a long term deal
5. Mark Anderson...Had a great rookie year and a sophomore slump...TBD
6. JD Runnels...Never saw the field
6. Tyler Reed...Coming on this camp, may make the team...
The draft class of 2007-2008 need at least two years on the field before they can be judged...
I think this speaks for itself...he has been a failure
