NHL  > General NHL  > Crosby Handshake "Snub"
June 16, 2009, 04:39 PM
I hate to bring up old news (and I'm not trying to start anything). But Mark Madden made a good point on the radio today. Everyone knows how Kris Draper called out Crosby for not shaking Lidstrom's hand saying it was disrespectful, yadda yadda, etc. People (Pens haters) all over the internet's hockey message boards are making this into a huge deal. "Crosby is classless" and "Crosby needs to learn hockey's old traditions," is what people have recently been accusing him of. In Sid's defense, he was celebrating his team's first Stanley Cup Championship. The Pens are a young team and for many players on the team, this is their first championship. Unlike most players on the Wings who have multiple cups. So, its easy to guess that there aren't words to describe how excited Crosby, Malkin, Fleury and the rest of the 20-something crew were when the final horn sounded. Leading to an elongated celebration.

For the Wings, it looked like they couldn't get off the ice fast enough. Heading straight to the line, shaking hands, and leaving the ice. As we all know, Crosby was part of the losing side last year. Anyone remember that "I never want to be in this picture again" commercial? If not, here's the link ** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_tpmQ9AAok ** That same picture was taken while the Penguins were WAITING for the Wings to be done celebrating so they could shake their hands. And what happens in return? Almost hypocritical if you ask me. Perhaps the Wings don't know that there is a classy way to lose as well as there is to win, most likely because they almost never fall short in a Stanley Cup Final.

One would know though before such a celebration, the teams do get together for the handshake. I disagree with what some may think or say in that the Wings couldn't get off the ice fast enough. They way I looked at it, the Wings shook hands with whomever was on the ice and left so the Pens could start their celebration. The media taking Crosby away from the handshake line was inexcusable. However, he is a man and could have told the media to wait. Just my opinion.

I have tried to refrain from comment on this because i am of old Tradition.I do think that it wasnt very cool that the shake didnt happen.Tradition is tradition and he knew of this tradition!Honestly i do think this could taint his Captiancy. This isnt basketball this is HOCKEY,Ya shake the fudging hand of your fellow competetitors unless your claude lemieux or sean avery!I do think it was extremely disrespectful to the second best defenseman in NHL history only to Mr Orr!I mean did Lidstrom pshut him down so bad that he hates him now?I just dont know.Yes the wings wanted to get off the ice. They have been there before and they knew it was Pittsburg's moment to shine. It has been thatway with every single cup won since it's conception!Im not Pisssed im disappointed.my respect for Sid grew alot in this season and Playoff run and for this to happen well lets just say, well whatever!NOT TOO COOL CROSBY!!!!!

I am a huge wing fan........Crosby should have shook hands, but in the end it was a great series and the Pens won, lets move on

I don't think Crosby hates Lidstrom because he shut him down. I think it was a misunderstanding or something of the sort on boths sides. I can see why the Pens players took awhile to get to the line and I can also see why some Wings may have felt slighted that Sid wasn't in the line quicker. You obviously know who's side I'm on, but I like hearing all the different views on the subject.

Love Madden - "Big Fan, Big Fan."

Draper, the a.$.$. clown and then later Zetterberg were making a big deal out of nothing. IMHO, they expected to be handed the cup, instead they got handed a loss by the amazing performance of the Flower.

Instead of being classy and waiting for Crosby to be done, or even going up to HIM for the handshake (that would have shown real class), they wait two minutes and march off the ice.

Like Crosby said, he didn't mean to snub them, but felt he deserved the moment to celebrate with his teammates and such. Moment. Damn right!

June 17, 2009  10:13 AM ET

I don't know how big a deal this is, but I do know something about leadership. When you're a leader, you set an example, and you have to measure your actions carefully. He should have followed through with the tradition. If he doesn't, then maybe he shouldn't wear the "C". Leaders lead - suggesting that he was too caught up means he wasn't leading, he was following. Not classy.

It doesn't take anything away from a great Pens team that played their guts out. But I do think it diminishes Sid a little bit. He's a youngster; let's hope this is a youthful aberration, and not a trend.

Okay...going with your theory, then Lidstrom should have STAYED ON THE ICE like Crosby did last year and waited for the handshake. Hmm?

Yep.

Oh, no, say it ain't so, DWI. Mark Madden is an idiot. He once called Daryl Strawberry a waste of a cure for cancer, and said that he always wished that Ted Kennedy would live long enough to be assassinated. Now don't get mad at me :)

But this is beating a dead horse. The guys who had the stugats to wait it out got to shake hands. Other guys stomped off to the locker room. I'm a big fan of tradition, and maybe Sid took a little while celebrating. Big deal. Next.

Right on. Leaders show humility and grace in defeat, too.

Oh, don't misinterpret, friend. Neither comment I support, and I supported his suspension from radio when he made the Kennedy remark. He also remarks (although I think jokingly) that women should be in the kitchen at all times. Something I am not a subscriber to. That all being said, the man knows hockey, and I like hockey talk.

That simple. :)

F'in A. Maybe the Detroit WAAA WAAA's should go back and look at the tape from last year regardless.

You know how I feel overall about this situation? Sure, things could have played out better. Crosby could have put a little more "pep in his step" and told the reporters and his teammates to go f-themselves when they were tackling him, but he didn't, and what is the best? He makes NO APOLOGIES for it. FINALLY!!! Sid didn't make an apology for something he shouldn't. He was humble and respectful in his response, but basically said "I GOT OVER THERE, but not in the time they thought appropriate. I deserved to celebrate!" (Not verbatim). But the kid has some balls - that is leadership! Nice.

And I meant to say that. Madden does indeed know hockey.

BTW, I didn't mean to suggest that you were behind those remarks. That was for the benefit of people who don't know Mark Madden. Now get back in the kitchen ;>/

Hadn't thought of it that way, and you are spot on again. Be nice until it's time not to be nice.

Yes, Madden can be a prick, but I do believe it is all "for show."

Again, I fully understand crossing the line though "even for show." I supported that suspension not only cause it was not related to anything sports and unecessary, but that he would have costed the station/network a ton of cash.

Uh, uh - you get in that kitchen!

The frustrating thing about the whole Strawberry thing is that Madden wrote this in a Pst Gazette column. It's not like he fired from the lip--he actually thought it through. His reasoning was that Strawberry is an addict and being an addict is choice, not a disease; therefore, he didn't deserve treatment. He recanted when a close friend was struggling with addiction--Kevin Stevens. Too late, Slappy. But enough with Big Sexxxy or whatever he calls himself now. I'll stick with Savran, who knows a thing or two about hockey, too.
