NFL  > Minnesota Vikings  > Brett Favre will not be able to finish the season injury free.

Look, as much as it is intriguing to have Favre, you have to be realistic about it.

The reason he holds the longest streak of starts is not only because he is a tough SOB, but also because he is a stubborn SOB who will play through injuries despite a severe drop-off in play.

Last year with the Jets, he got injured and instead of saying "hey, this is affecting my throws and I can't perform my job at the level required of me", he just pushed through and destroyed the season for them.

Mark my words, he will do it again.

Hey, if he ever gets on board, give Barf a chance......

June 30, 2009  03:20 AM ET

Brett may not make it through the season but I think he will play better than last year. Why? He didn't want to play for the Jets; he wants to play in Minnesota.

June 30, 2009  04:25 AM ET

Brett still has maybe 2 more years left in him to play great football.Look beyond all the HYPE and B.S. and let this hall of famer get you to the promice land! Plus we (bears) get to beat him up a couple times a year and add to his int. totals. =)

Getting involved with Favre is going to be a nightmare for the Vikings. Just like it was for the Jets last year.

Favre might just quit halfway thru the season once he finds out he doesn't have it anymore. He looked like he didn't want to be there the last 5 games for the Jets last year.

I have no clue why he's coming back again other than some more big paychecks and because he doesn't want to give up being a celebrity. Or because he has nothing else to fill his time with.

Even when Favre is not at 100%, he's still better than Tavaris Jackson. T-Jack has been in the Vikings system long enough to know the system, and he still doesn't get it. The Vikes have to beat up Adrian Peterson and run, run, run because Jackson can't read defenses...he's just not an NFL quarterback in my opinion.

June 30, 2009  10:48 AM ET

Um, last time I checked, the coach made the decision on whether or not a player is too injured to play. The Jets do have coaches, don't they?

June 30, 2009  11:43 AM ET

Favre is a mistake. There is no promised land left in this guy. The Vikes don't need him. Here's what will happen. Favre will start the season ok, but no one is going to give him the benefit of the doubt- they will treat him like they did Jackson and Frerotte- put 8 men in the box to come in after Peterson on a run blitz- then keep coming for Favre. It's really the only way to play the Vikings and Peterson. Peterson will beat you- Favre may but you make him prove it. The problem is Favre isn't the same player and won't get better over time but worse. He doesn't have the ability to consistently beat teams so the Vikes won't be much better. At least with Rosenfels or Jackson they can get better- Favre is a waste of time. The O-line with Birk couldn't protect either QB we had last year- they won't be able to protect Favre either. Lastly, Green Bay will be foaming at the mouth to beat Favre and the Vikes- Football is an emotional game. GB will have a significant advantage both times they play. You don't need Favre to win the division- why motivate your rivals.

there is some truth to what you are saying.... where a romo will miss a month w/ a broken finger (and i'm not saying it was unjustified) favre will play through the pain as he has done countless times. however, he is almost always less effective and mistakes he'd normally not make if healthy start to happen as a result of his injury. the guy has guts!! just needs someone to reel-him-in at times. but yes, his age will prevent him from playing 16 games.

I have problems with this opinion.

1) It sure isn't going out very far on a limb to predict a player who will turn 40, and who was injured last season, to get injured this season. More like stating the obvious.

2) Favre disclosed his injury to the Jets coaching and training staff last season and was treated for it by them. The coaching staff made the decision to play him despite his impaired condition. They could see how he was playing and they decided to leave him on the field. This was not a case of Favre hiding his injury for selfish reasons.

Favre does play through pain. If you put him on the field when he is injured, he will give you everything that he has left. I'm sorry, but I don't see that as a negative.

Let us all remember, life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to ...

"Skid in Sideways - Beer in one hand - Redhead in the other - Body thoroughly used up, Totally worn out, Thrashed, Trashed, Kickin-&-Screaming .... 'HOLY-SH|T ... What a Freaking Ride!'

Use it up Brett .... Use it - A L L - up

Amen brother...so very true. Just let the old gunslinger play.

Heck...through the first 12 weeks of last year (prior to his injury) he had every bit as good of stats (20 TDs and 13 INTs) as a certain new Bears' QB (19 TDs and 12 INTs).

That tells me that either he isn't as washed up as so many of the so-called experts think he is, or that new Bears' QB isn't all that either.

Hear hear.

Let the man play.

The only reason Favre is playing because he wants to stick it to Ted T. Why would he put himself through surgery, and then play for the Viking's, Please! The Vikings! Everyone knows that this the only reason why. If he would have stayed retired (at the time he wasn't hurt) he would have went down in history as one of the greatest QB's ever to play. Now after playing for the Jets he wants to go out on a high note (Like his last season with the Pack). His reputation is tarnished, he is hurt and is sitting on a grudge. Now Brett say's he wants to play for the Vikings if of course he is arm is well enough to play. I wonder how long it will be before he makes up his mind. What do the Vikings care , they need QB that will bring spark to a sparkless team, unless you are talking about going on a boat ride. Fran T. hit the nail on the head regarding Brett and the Vikings. If Brett was to walk away today I'm sure the Packer Nation would forgive him and then the Viking Fans would return to hating him once again.
