The Eagles are competing with the Phillies for viewers today.

Forget about “March Madness,” this is easily the best time of the sports year and probably the best excuse to splurge on a second television -- or at least one with picture-in-picture capabilities. I have neither, so will have to rely on the old “previous channel” button on my remote.

At the same time the Phillies will be taking on the Brewers in Game 3 of their NLDS at 1 p.m. EST, there will be eight NFL games, headlined by the Eagles taking on the Redskins, which will no doubt cause more than a few Philly fans to suffer from whiplash as they attempt to watch both at their local sports bar.

When the Rays and White Sox take to the field for Game 3 of the ALDS at 4 p.m. EST there will be four NFL games ready to kick off, with Chad Johnson potentially kissing the Cowboys’ star at Texas Stadium during the Bengals-Cowboys game providing the most intrigue. And while the Red Sox look to sweep the Angels in Game 3 of their ALDS, the Steelers will be preparing to face the Jaguars in another solid Sunday Night Football offering.

Baseball has long been known as “America’s Pastime” but few would argue that the popularity of the NFL has long surpassed that of Major League Baseball and there will be no greater test of that today. So what will it be? If you had to pick only one sport to watch today would you be watching potentially series clinching games in the MLB playoffs or full slate of NFL games in Week 5 of the season?

In Pittsburgh, it's neither in the afternoon. Pens hockeyat 2:30 and the Steelers tonight.

October 5, 2008  04:19 PM ET

If it is the Red Sox vs. the Dodgers, then it is the MLB, unless the Bills have re-match with the Giants in the Super Bowl, then it is the NFL.

I like football, baseball, and, to a slightly lesser degree, hockey. But playoffs ALWAYS trump the regular season. Luckily, I'm DVRing the Steelers game tonight and watching the Red Sox-Angels. Then, after that game is over, I'll go back to the Steelers-Jags game.

Too much exciting sports to watch on TV nowadays. I no longer watch news or politics anymore, they are too predictable and boring.

October 5, 2008  04:27 PM ET

ThatStinks - I agree, now that the Cubs have been knocked out (and ruined the best potential Series matchup, which would have been Cubs-Red Sox, with Wrigley and Fenway in the same series) Dodgers-Red Sox is probably the best remaining potential matchup in the Series. It would be interesting to see the Fenway reaction to Manny, and it would be a good series (though I think the Sox, with home-field, would prevail). There are also a TON of notable ex-Red Sox on the Dodgers for any one team (Nomar, Derek Lowe, Manny) and their manager is an ex-Yankee manager.

SteelersSox,

My guess is that if it is the Red Sox vs. the Dodgers, the Red Sox fans will be nice to Manny up until he helps the Dodgers win a game.

October 5, 2008  04:38 PM ET

Always baseball. Especially playoff baseball. Especially Red Sox playoff baseball.

October 5, 2008  04:49 PM ET

All baseball all the time!

October 5, 2008  04:54 PM ET

Playoff baseball, of course. Jumping over to Steelers during commercials.

October 5, 2008  05:28 PM ET

BASEBALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

October 5, 2008  06:34 PM ET

Even as a longtime football fan, this is easy for me. I could care less about the NFL in October when it's MLB play-offs. (Full disclosure, I am a Raiders fan). College football would be a tougher decision to make. But the NFL? Easy decision, MLB always wins out.

October 5, 2008  06:50 PM ET

Football without a doubt. I'll watch all the NFL I can, then catch the baseball highlights on Sports Center.

October 5, 2008  07:14 PM ET

Baseball.

Football doesn't even count until Vovember anyway.

October 5, 2008  07:17 PM ET

always baseball

October 5, 2008  07:44 PM ET

Football, if you told me to sit and watch 162 games of one sport id quite honestly cry. You couldnt pay me to do it. 16 is so much easier and the playoffs are much more exciting in football than in baseball.

October 5, 2008  08:12 PM ET

Great days for a remote there both good. The playoffs mean more than these early football games.

October 5, 2008  08:20 PM ET

dude you gotta watch the red sox go on to win back to back world series. we got it again this year, however, football games like maybe skins-cowboys, pats (even w/o brady)-colts, games like that you're gonna have to watch, because they are definitely classic rivalry games. but go red sox

October 5, 2008  08:56 PM ET

baseball playoffs, not a decision for a browns fan, even if they weren't on their bye week

October 6, 2008  01:20 AM ET

Must also mention, that today was a good day in the WNBA too. Detroit Shock won their 3 championship in 6 years.

If the Cubs or Yankees were in it, it'd be close, but NFL rules normally.
