Citgo sign
An electrical fire melted a part of the Citgo sign Wednesday.
Boston Globe

Just when the Red Sox thought they'd overcome the curses, superstitions and hoodoo so closely associated with their history, this news breaks.

The famous Citgo sign looming over the Green Monster at Boston's Fenway Park caught fire this morning -- hours after the home team's season went on life support with a 13-4 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Boston Globe reports an electrical blaze inside the sign melted part of the plastic facade, causing $5,000 in damage, and passers-by could see the flames from Storrow Drive.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, the Globe reports, and nobody was injured.

Boston trails Tampa Bay three-games-to-one in the best-of-seven American League Championship Series. Game 5 is tomorrow night at Fenway.

Total coincidence? Or a bad omen for a Sox team with their backs up against it?

ITS OVER FOR SURE NOW!

ITS A CURSE!!!! DEATH TO THE RED SUX!

October 15, 2008  03:38 PM ET

oooo I think that means that a Red Sox player has to be sacrificed to appease the baseball gods. Somebody hold Dice K down and make it quick. Be warned...if the sacrifice is not made, the Red Sox are DOOMED! Also, send copies of this comment to 50 million people in 10 minutes or you will have bad luck for all eternity.

A more ominous sign is a double-digit lead in the polls for Master Obama.

October 15, 2008  03:59 PM ET

About time that stupid Hugo Chavez gas sign burns to the ground!

October 15, 2008  04:01 PM ET

Who gives a **** about a sign? You know what is really ominous? Being down 3-1.

October 15, 2008  05:37 PM ET

Riggs , I think you should be more worried about your Cowgirls than the Redsox.

October 15, 2008  07:16 PM ET

I agree with TN_FAN. Burn the tribute to Hugo Chavez to the ground. That's a good omen in my book. Then let's get on with playing baseball. It'll be home run derby with Kaz on the mound.

Are you sure??? It one team can overcome a 1-3 deficit, its the red sox. they done it twice...

October 16, 2008  07:46 AM ET

There was NO Red Sox curse and there is just as much chance for a comeback as any other team of equal talent against the Rays. Special? Yea, like the Pats in the last Super Bowl.

October 16, 2008  07:47 AM ET

The magic is 90% of the fans vanishing when it looks like the team has no chance. They just vanish!

October 16, 2008  07:54 AM ET

It is not over till it is over but Rays are playing great ball.

Im from Boston, dont even care if they win or lose. same for the patriots. The success over the past few years has been great. So i'm onto the Bruins now. I want to see them get past Montreal in the playoffs someday.
