Eli Manning
Is Eli Manning overrated or underrated or could he be both?
Gregory Shamus/Getty Images

The Players Poll in this week's Sports Illustrated, based on a survey of 320 NFL players, asks "Who is the most underrated quarterback in the NFL?"

Jacksonville's David Garrard led the way with an entire fifth of the vote, with New York's Eli Manning and New Orleans' Drew Brees tied for second place with eight percent apiece.

Here's where things get a little funny.

Take a look back at last week's poll, asking "Who is the most overrated quarterback in the NFL?"

There, Manning garnered 10 percent of the vote, tying for second place with Dallas' Tony Romo, three percentage points behind San Diego's Philip Rivers.

Can somebody explain how the same player can be considered both overrated and underrated by a pool of his peers?

I vote for wayy overrated..hes a average qb, only last year was his first 90+ season rating (was average then, media didnt blow up his average playing style/stats)...he still sucks arse....

Next.

Sure, all the Colts and Patriots fans and people who play fantasy football cast the overrated vote. All the Lions, Chiefs, Raiders and Vikings fans, along with every other fan whose team has no QB, joined together to call him underrated, since they'd love to have someone competent throwing the ball for thier team. It all evens out.

He's cute. And I think his chest looks just fine.

October 15, 2008  04:51 PM ET

Hey, DewGenius, this poll was of NFL PLAYERS, not fans.

It's pretty simple: the teams he scorches for 400 yards say "underrated," the teams that sack him three times and pick him twice say "overrated."

October 15, 2008  04:54 PM ET

The same thing happened when they polled MLB players. Derek Jeter got 10% of the underrated vote and 15% of the overrated vote. I don't know how anyone could consider him underrated, but that's the way it goes.

Oh, good call. I still think the Lions and Vikings and Raiders players all call him underrated for the same reason, though.

Because those who say he's underrated focus on the fact that he gets talked about negatively all the time by fans and pundits who are upset by him not living up to expectations, and generally refer to him as not being a top-10 quarterback, despite the fact that he was largely responsible for postseason success last year, and that he's thrown for more than 3,000 yards and 23 touchdowns every year.

And those who say he's overrated decided to focus on the fact that he gets talked about at all in any conservations (even though it's mostly been negative in his career), and that he has gotten more attention in recent months because he played for the super bowl champions, and that he's all of a sudden living up to expectations, but getting more attention that would generally give you, while also realizing he's thrown more than 15 interceptions in each full season thus far.

That's the reason. Right there.

Also, anyone who thinks Tony Romo is underrated needs to watch any random 30 second period of time of SportsCenter and count how many times they name-drop the guy as the next coming of Dan Marino, John Elway, Peyton Manning, and Tom Brady.

Eli sucks.Has always sucked. Most overrated QB in the NFL.Their running game and defense is why they win games, not because of Eli. Worthless doosh bag.

tony romo is so overrated...he is just truly awful...now eli manning is not that bad, but he is defiantly average!

October 15, 2008  06:51 PM ET

I think hostrauser summed up the whole, overrated/underrated thing about Eli pretty well. It's not that uncommon for the players to be split on how they rate their peers. I still remember an interview with T.O. from way back when he stated how overrated Tom Brady was. A 50-touchdown pass season, and an unfortunate knee injury, seem to have ended the ridiculous debate about that.

I'd much rather have known what the coaches would have said to this question. I've always thought with the players that rivalries and professional jealousies cloud their objectivity too much when it comes to evaluating their opponents. Or at least take that poll amongst quarterbacks only and see how it turns out.

Eli is so underrated. As someone who hates the Giants, I can't help but respect how Eli can play terribly for 3 quarters and then go out in the fourth and win the game for his team. At the end of the day, its all about winning right? Well, Manning has a huge effect on his team, and they win! More importantly, they win BECAUSE of him, not in spite of him. Cowboys fans can go cry about their lost season with TO

Eli is a football player with a Super Bowl ring. Excellent point from above--they win because of him. I love that fact that the only ring Romo will see for many years to come are Jessica's!!!!!! Love to witness the Cowgirl meltdown all the way from NY!!!!

October 15, 2008  08:33 PM ET

Look Eli is a very good, solid quarterback who will continue to get better. He lives in Hoboken, NJ across the Hudson River from the Big Apple. He doesn't get rattled by any NY pressure and is as cool as Joe Montana who didn't have a bad career. All is OK with the G-Men!

hmmm.... one of the greatest QBs of all time, Brett Favre, just said about Romo, "not only is he tough, but I think he's one of the top five players in the NFL right now, regardless of position..."
I would consider that a pretty good endorsement...

October 15, 2008  10:27 PM ET

and the cowboy "meltdown"??? let's see, they have injuries for sure, but they just lost a criminal and picked up one of the top receivers in the league... romo will play now, not sit, and they certainly have a chip on their shoulders... I live in NY, and I'm a Giants fan, but the Cowboys have lost 2 very close games, and we just got SMOKED by the browns, and IT WASN'T REMOTELY CLOSE... if Giants fans out there - and I'm talking to you COWBOYKILLA - aren't just a LITTLE worried about the boys coming to town in a few weeks, you are kidding yourselves

Because the goofs on ESPN are infallible. Romo is overrated, albiet a very talented QB. I think he will become better with age, but he makes a lot of dumb mistakes still. He is a top ten QB, but not as good as most people think.

Though he if he said anything negative or indifferent about Romo or the Cowboys he would be that overrated loser that most Dallas fans hate (even though he always had difficulty dispatching the 'Boys)

I don't know if you're a Dallas fan or not, but the word of Favre is not universally respected--though it probably should be since he is already a bona fide NFL legend and he's only retired three times =P

October 15, 2008  11:02 PM ET

I'm not necessarily a Dallas fan, but I also don't irrationally hate them like everyone else seems to... and I'm a bigger fan of the game than of any particular team... I like Romo because he's fun to watch - it really is that simple... and he plays with the excitement and giddyness that I remember when I was a young punk playing football - just like Favre does... I'm so tired of all these spolied athletes cry about everything and getting paid millions and not showing up... give me a Favre or Romo anyday - someone who plays with passion, who makes it look like fun, INT or TD, play after play... that is just fun to watch...

You can tell Eli Manning in a crowd; he's the one wearing the Ring.
