The loss to 'Cuse may cost the Irish a New Year's bowl.
AP

Fans sitting in the student section at Notre Dame Stadium bestowed the ultimate dishonor on the Fighting Irish by pelting the players with snowballs during the first quarter of Saturday's stunning loss to Syracuse.

Idiots.

Other than consuming too much alcohol, I'm not sure what would possess a fan to launch any object at a player. This boorish behavior is supposed to happen in Philadelphia, not South Bend.

Losing to one Big East team (Pittsburgh) this season was bad enough. But that was like getting beat by USC compared to being upset by Syracuse with lame-duck coach Greg Robinson.

Next weekend figures to be really ugly for Notre Dame when Charlie Weis takes his team into the L.A. Coliseum to get trampled by Pete Carroll's Trojans. That loss, coupled with losing to Syracuse, should cost Notre Dame a New Year's Day bowl game.

There is no way the Gator Bowl committee would invite a 6-6 team.

They shouldn't be in a New Year's day bowl anyways. They've played some of the worst teams in college football in San Diego State, Michigan, Washington, Purdue, and Syracuse so their schedule isn't impressive. If they did end up in a New Year's day bowl, which doesn't look to be likely with next week's USC game, they'd more than likely get butchered as always.

I would like to see CW get one more year to turn the corner

November 23, 2008  10:58 AM ET

ND should atleast let Fat Boy finish out his contract, he's doing a fine job sinking the ship. ND does'nt deserve any bowl unless its the toilet bowl. USC will destroy the helpless Irish and CW will probably be gone

I can't think of a bigger embarrassment for a football team than that of being booed, or even worse, pelted with snow balls by your own fans. It's really a sad state of affairs at the bastion of such a venerable college football tradition as is Notre Dame. Our dear lady is not smiling.

Why must you bring Philadelphia into this?

You're an unoriginal hack. Write something that matters, like a resignation letter.

November 23, 2008  11:07 AM ET

Hmmm....and I guess these geniuses thought that booing and throwing things at the players would make them play better? I think CW is the least of ND's problems. The brain-rot up there appears to be systemic.

November 23, 2008  11:12 AM ET

Love it, God help me, I do love it so.

Because Phildelphia fans are universally acknowledged for what they are: utterly classless bores.

Nice work from the student section! What a great way to entice one of the nations top LB recruits (Manti Te'o) to come to your school by pelting the players with snowballs...Idiots!!
Or did he even showup?

You live in Weaverville. Not much else to say at this point.

I've been a Notre Dame fan for 45 years. The fans throwing snowballs should be ashamed of themselves. They are idiots. As for the football team, get over it. They lost. But, they'll be o.k. given time. To tell you the truth, I'm proud of the team. I'm a fan of Charlie's. Unlike some college football programs especially in the Top 20, our players can actually read and write coming out of high school.

University of Florida graduated 23/23 seniors, not too mention that the academics are of considerably higher standard at the Flagship University of the Great(est) State of Florida. UF is the new ND!!! Get with the program, ND is old news.

November 23, 2008  11:42 AM ET

The sad part about all of this for ND (and I am no fan of ND) is the expectations placed on their team. ND is not relevant, and has not been so for 20 years. They are, and have not been in two decades, an elite team. It's laughable that some people (and you all know two or three Domer's who do) still consider them a "top" team. This team was great.... A long time ago.

I love hearing ND fans gloat that they should be included in the discussion each year as a relevant team because of their great "history" and their 2005 season. Please. Their "history", their championships, were from an era when, under the same logic, we should be considering Yale/Princeton/Harvard/Minnesota/Michigan St as elite programs nowadays as well. The fact that they have 8 championships before 1950 does not impress me at all. How many do you have in the last 20 years? And per 2005, take your ridiculous arguments elsewhere. News flash to Domer's everywhere: To be considered elite, a top program, you need to have 9 wins EVERY year. The fact that it happened in 2005, again, not impressed. Under the same logic, the fact that Kansas finished in the top ten last year, makes them a fantastic program.

And don't even get me started on their BCS berths. Win a bowl, then some bragging. The fact that you steal a bowl berth from someone else each year, and the country has to suffer through your contract on national television each year is laughable.

I say, keep Weis. You, ND, made the incredibly intelligent choice to sign him for 10 years and $40 million, you should suffer the consequences.

November 23, 2008  11:43 AM ET

ND cannot play in the Toilet Bowl; that game is played in the preseason between the SF 49ers and the Oakland Raiders.

November 23, 2008  11:45 AM ET

Florida Gators graduated 23/23 seniors, plus the academics are of much higher standard at the Flagship University of the Great(est) State of Florida. Get over it. ND is old, old news.

November 23, 2008  11:47 AM ET

Did I miss something? Is Notre Dame ENTITLED to go to a bowl every year? They aren't very good. Six wins makes you bowl ELIGIBLE - not bowl ENTITLED. You have at least 1/2 of the Big XII going to bowls: OU, Texas, Tech, OSU, Mizzou and Nebraska - ND couldn't beat ANY of those teams. Probably 6 teams from the SEC deserve to go - Notre Dame plays a weak schedule and gets their butt kicked - why put them in a bowl?

Good. Maybe we won't have to hear any of your inane thoughts.

You shouldn't be so touchy when people accurately describe Philly fans. They would throw at their own dads if they knew who they were.

November 23, 2008  11:55 AM ET

Spare me Florida fans. Everyone knows that if a kid can run fast and jump high, they'll get into Florida or any other SEC school. And don't get me started on Va. Tech. Although Alabama has most schools beat in that department, at least that's what I'm told. ND won't lower admission standards to have a great football team, haven't in 20 years. Good for them. ND will be just fine. Eventually, we'll win more championships and we'll continue go graduate our players.

Another person who knows enough to know absolutely nothing. Congrats on that.

He's leading with his right X. But he's three, four rounds tops. He's yours.
