What do Aquaman and Michael Phelps have in common? Both are superhuman in the water, but once they step on dry land they're only human.
Phelps, the Olympic swimmer who won a record eight gold medals, is certain to be a punchline on late night TV for being photographed inhaling from a bong, and we all know what those are used for. The picture appeared in the British tabloid News of the World and the story will likely be appearing in supermarket tabloids over the next week.
In no way should getting caught smoking pot at a college party in South Carolina diminish what Phelps achieved last summer in Beijing. It doesn't tarnish any of his medals. He's not an Olympic doper like Ben Johnson or Marion Jones. He may be embarrassed, but he's not a disgraced athlete.
College kids smoking pot isn't exactly a newsflash. But when it's a 23-year-old Olympic record-holder, it most definitely is news.
What was Phelps thinking? He wasn't. He was hanging out with some buddies and getting stoned was his way of chilling out after four years of intense training. For all we know, he could have eaten a Snickers bar that night.
