Each night I confirmed with both coaches their starters for the broadcasters and... that we had the officiating crew right for the box. Who covers what game is unknown by anyone until they arrive in the building. (This was so long ago, Andy Elisburg was an intern but most of the officials Donaghy blows the whistle on were there.) In that role you get to know some of these guys and... you hear things. Donaghy is on point. Just ask Mark Cuban what he thinks about this (if he'll comment). This, more than anything, is what got him in trouble with the Commish and why he resorted to his referee rating system... to try and expose it. Once an official gets to that level, it is royalty. I ref here in the UK and wish folks had half the authority, respect and back-up of these guys. The intimidation factor is such that no one can ever say anything. Cuban often came right up to the line and backed away out of fear. Was Donaghy trying to sell books? Absolutely. Could some items have been exaggerated? Probably. Was he wrong to bring them to light now? Maybe. Was he 100% factually untrue in all of that detail? Not a chance.
