"Bobby Petrino is leaving the Falcons?? Holy #&%$!"
--An actual text message that hit my cell phone Monday night when the news broke that Petrino would be leaving Atlanta to take the Arkansas head-coaching job.
In eight words, my friend pretty much sums up everyone's feelings on this stunning turn of events, especially mine. Less than a year ago, I sat in the interview room at the Falcons complex in Flowery Branch, Ga., and listened to Petrino describe his new gig as "the best job in the National Football League." Tomorrow, I'll sit in that same room and listen to owner Arthur Blank and general manager Rich McKay introduce Petrino's interim replacement. Crazy.
My gut reaction to the news is this: If I'm Blank, I'm not crossing the street anytime soon. How much can go wrong for him this year? First, your star QB is found to have run an illegal dogfighting operation and will spend the next two years in jail. As a result, your team is left without its star QB and loses 10 of its first 13 games. Now, the man you pledged to pay almost $5 million per year to coach the team is leaving you to take a job at a university where crazed fans rule the roost.
I've shared my feelings on Tuesday's news, and now it's your turn. Was Petrino smart to jump ship? Or is he just the latest in a long line of smarmy coaches who can't be trusted? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

He wasted everybodies time. As a season ticket holder who decided to invest in the season in hopes he could right the ship, I feel betrayed. What a bum...he deserves every negative comment in regards to extreme lack of character. I paid his salary and he robbed me.

As a big razorback fan, I'm naturally wary of a coach who jumps ship when things go bad.

The man clearly didn't know how to treat men as men. Just like the guy in Miami who QUIT on his team, he will go back to college where he can dictate. I hope the owner can find a coach that will take the team to heart. This guy was a loser from the start.

He made the right decision. His heart is in college football, obviously. He clearly demonstrated that he can't handle NFL players (DeAngelo Hall, for example). He's probably kicking himself now that he had to watch his old team (Louisville) go down in flames this year. I think he made the right decision, even though he wasted a year for the Atlanta Falcons.

First, the Falcons lose Vick, thus giving their season an even less chance of breaking even (let's face it, Vick was hit or miss perfomance wise).
Now Petrino pulls a Nick Saban. Some will say "Can you blame him?" but I say "Why didn't he at least finish the season?"
As a Falcon fan, especially one used to losing, these are scary times. It seems as if the team can't catch a break at all. I just hope this isn't the first sign of a possible move/dissolving of the team. I know many teams have seen worse, but the organization has to bounce back and quickly. The fans aren't just going to stop going to the games, they're going to start looking to the Titans, Saints, or Bucs for some sort of football vindication. Not a good time in Atlanta.
I've been a Falcon fan since I was six and at twenty three, I don't plan to relinquish my wings just yet. I just don't like the way things are heading. Here's hoping the Falcons continue to stink until Tim Tebow reaches the draft. A dream for the dirty birds if there ever was one.

Once again it is proven that college head coaches don't do well when they jump to the NFL (e.g., Steve Spurrier), nor do NFL head coaches do well when they go back to school (e.g., Charlie Weis). Bobby Petrino was just another fish out of water. At least he didn't wait as long to return to the college ranks as Spurrier did, so perhaps Bobby will not have "lost his touch" for the college game the way that Spurrier has.

Hopefully after we wash the stench that was this season off of ourselves we can cleanse ourselves and get a coach that respects his players and a QB that kids and adults can look up to. Petrino and Vick have done nothing but tarnish Atlanta as a sports city and made us a laughingstock. How fitting that Petrino resigns the day after that pig Vick got sentenced. May the both of them never set foot in Atlanta ever again! What disgraces!

I hate to say it, but I think Petrino was smart to jump ship. The players didn't like him. He didn't seem to make coherent choices at QB anyways: Harrington is in, but then somehow Leftwich is the starter after performing just as bad if not worse, but then Redman is the starter.
I was kinda hoping that Petrino would stick around and draft Brohm; that would've been interesting.

What a coward. At least we don't have to worry about the Falcons drafting Brohm. I was at the the Falcons Monday night game and after his play calling and lack of respect from the players, I say "good riddance".

If the Falcons are smart they'll avoid college coaches. Jason Garret is the best assistant coach out there. They should get him.

Step 1of the Atlanta housecleaning is now complete Next -- get rid of the veterans for whatever draft picks that you can. It's not like this team is going anywhere next year anyway. Dunn, Crumpler, Harrington, Milloy, and others should all be put on the trading block.
Dunn's a good citizen, which might be a reason the franchise keeps him. But he deserves better.

Hate Petrino if you want Falconites, but he's made the right decision, and it's the right decision for you as well. He's a good college coach, and he's not a good NFL coach. Some coaches are equipped to deal with a locker room full of highly paid "Just Gimme the Damn Ball" prima donnas, and some aren't. He isn't. At least he understood that, and bailed before he did your franchise any more damage than it's already sustained this season. Unfortunately, I think he's about to find that the SEC isn't Louisville. The expectations at UA will be considerably higher than they were with the Falcons or the Cardinals. Unless he delivers an SEC championship and/or a BCS championship, I predict three-and-out.

I WAS AT THE MONDAY NIGHT GAME, AND I HAVE WATCHED THE FALCONS FOR OVER THIRTY YEARS AND I MUST SAY I DON'T CARE WHO YOU GET TO COACH, THIS TEAM IS JUST FLAT OUT BAD. I HATE TO SAY IT BUT THESE GUY'S GET PAYED MILLIONS TO DO WHAT THEY DO. YOU WANT TO GET TREATED LIKE A MAN THEN PLAY LIKE A MAN. I DON'T CARE HOW MUCH YOU DON'T WANT TO BE THERE AND PLAY, GET OVER IT DO YOUR JOB. ALL THIS TEACHES IS IT IS OK TO QUIT. AS FAR AS QB GOES I THOUGHT REDMAN WAS OK. HOW DOES IT GO IF THE BALL TOUCHES YOUR HANDS CATCH IT, IT IS AMAZING IF YOU ACTUALLY TRY JUST WHAT MIGHT HAPPEN. IT DOES NOT MATTER WHO THE QB IS WITH THIS OFFENSE YOU WILL LOOK BAD. FOR THE DEFENSE WELL YOU JUST STINK. I GOT AN IDEA, MAN UP AND TACKLE SOMEONE, IT MIGHT WORK AND AS FOR VIC. I NEVER THOUGHT HE WAS A GOOD QB, HE COULD RUN AND HE COULD CATCH BUT REALLY TELL ME WHAT DID HE EVER DO FOR THIS TEAM THAT WAS SO GREAT? PUT FANS IN THE STANDS? PUT HALF NAKED FEMALES ON THE FIELD AND YOU WILL GET FANS IN THE STANDS. YOU DON'T NEED A COACH , YOU NEED TO REVAMP THIS TEAM. OUT WITH THE OLD AND IN WITH THE NEW, HEY IT CAN'T HURT.

Copy Guy is my boy!!! Seriously though, the fact that Blank is releasing him from his contract just goes to show you how messed up this situation has become. Guys like DeAngelo Hall know that this team was done for the season as soon as Vick was busted, but they can't take fate for fate. They have to find someone to blame it on. Petrino turned into a locker room scapegoat from the word go.
In the end, this season exposes Atlanta's greatest sin; being to reliant on Michael Vick. The entire team was taylored to Vick's abilities as opposed to the other way around. Teams cannot be dependent one player for the same reason our economy cannot be dependent on selling bananas: If something happens to the bananas, that's it!

Note regarding their upcoming coaching search:
He won't be able to pass for Atlanta.
He won't be able to rush for Atlanta.
He won't be able to block for Atlanta.
He won't be able to catch for Atlanta.
He won't be able to stop the run for Atlanta.
He won't be able to stuff a receiver for Atlanta.
He won't be able to return a punt or kickoff for Atlanta.
Have I made my point? For the next few seasons. It doesn't matter. Enjoy your top 5 draft picks for the three or four seasons. You've strayed into Oakland/Miami territory without even realizing it.

As a life-long Falcon fan, I've seen more heartbreak than triumph. But in the 30+ years I've rooted for my birds, this is the only time I can say I feel like someone hauled off & belted me across the jaw. What makes it worse- it was a member of our Falcon family that inflicted these wounds. As a fan, I'm hurt and disappointed by his actions-- he bailed on this team during a time we needed him most. Imagine how those within the organization must feel. A word of advice for the folks in Arkansas-- beware: it may not be long before you find yourselves in our shoes.

"get rid of the veterans" -- Exactly. Every player who showed loyalty to Vick on the MNF game should be axed. It's not about dogfighting or even Michael Vick. It's about showing respect to the owner, the management and the coaching staff. Those who mutiny should get the yard-arm, baby.
While I'm at it, I'll also say that I agreed with this comment: "If something happens to the bananas, that's it!" Truer words have never been spoken. If this saga has taught us nothing else, it's that we HAVE TO guard the bananas! ...wait.... what was I saying?

First, I am unusual; I was born and raised in Metro Atlanta and over 40. I remember Norm Van Brocklin, The Grits Blitz, Peachtree Bart, and The Dirty Bird. Mr. Home Depot purchases the team from the Smith???s and made this worse. It is hard to believe, but true! This is not Bobby Petrino???s fault, it goes to the top! Blank is letting the inmates run the asylum; he let Dan Reeves go and hired a ???kid??? coach who let the players do what they wanted, when they wanted. He got rid of him and brought in Petrino, regardless of personality, Blank and McKay did not back him. Players are paid to play, if that is not a oxymoron, and need to do what they are told, when they don???t, all management stays on the same page and backs the organization. It does not seem like Blank had a clue, when leaving Home Depot the and Marcus recommended Nardelli as CEO, that was a disaster, and now we know that he is no better picking football coach???s! This is embarrassing and disgusting!! I will watch the Sugar Bowl on the 1st and wait until kick-off in Athens next year!
