For those who haven't heard yet, Affliction owner Todd Beard was slapped with a restraining order from Kim Couture yesterday for allegedly threatening and stalking her family. The order comes nearly 11 years after the mother of Beard's child took out a restraining order against him for reportedly beating her.
The maybe not-so-shocking part in all this -- at least to those who knew, or knew of, Beard -- is that he's a mess. But the big news relates to the Couture lawsuit and how it could ultimately close the curtains on Affliction.
Why? Donald Trump.
Revelation of Beard's felony has raised speculation that Trump, a stakeholder in Affliction would end his association with the apparel company turned promoter. The real estate mogul has a gaming license in New Jersey and, by law, licensees cannot do business with felons.
The Couture lawsuit could spell the end for Affliction's MMA gambit if for no other reason than it makes the whiff of impropriety too pungent to ignore. Transparency is a killer and it's not helping Affliction at all in a moment like this. It's not to suggest Affliction cooks the books or is the Las Vegas yakuza in loud t-shirts. It's that aside from any obstacles that already existed to successfully promoting MMA shows, the skeleton of Todd Beard in Affliction's closet serves as kryptonite to the well-connected, mainstream, powerful and image conscious players they need to push through.
