Kimbo Slice was humbled in 14 seconds.
Tom Casino/EliteXC/CBS

Don't blame Kevin Ferguson for being Kimbo Slice. For being called "the king of the web brawlers" by Rolling Stone. For being on the cover of ESPN the Magazine and being labeled "the ultimate YouTube legend." For being featured in publications ranging from the Los Angeles Times to the Miami Herald as "the face of MMA."

When you get swindled into buying a lemon from a used car salesman, you have to shoulder some of the blame and also take your hat off to the guy who made you believe the hunk of junk you just drove off the lot was actually worth something.

Kimbo Slice never believed he was a great MMA fighter. To be honest, he never really believed he was a good one. He was a brawler, plain and simple, and he knew it. Everything else that came with it -- the fame, the hype, the attention -- that was the brilliant marketing strategy of his management team. Guys like his manager Mike "Icey" Imber and EliteXC Vice President Jared Shaw did a masterful job of selling Slice to the masses and many in the mainstream media that didn't know the first thing about MMA. They wrote about Slice as if he were the biggest star in the sport when the fact was he was a backyard brawler that fought bums for money as an amateur and fought below-average fighters for money as a professional.

Three of his four fights as a professional lasted less than a minute (two never even reached the 20-second mark), and each one of his bouts had an almost WWE-like feel to it, with each outcome overshadowed by rumors of a possible fix so promoters could continue the legend and lie that was Kimbo Slice. Seth Peruzelli, who defeated Slice by TKO just 14 seconds into the first round of Saturday's national unveiling of Slice for the below average MMA fighter that he is, admitted as much Monday when he was on The Monsters in the Morning radio show.

"I knew I would do all right with him actually standing up," Petruzelli said. "The promoters kinda hinted to me, and they gave me the money to stand and trade with him. They didn't want me to take him down. Let's just put it that way. It was worth my while to stand up and try to punch him."

After the fight, Shaw even called out head referee, Tony Wragge, about the fight's stoppage, saying, "I can't file a protest myself but I think (Slice's) camp will look at it and decide on their own." That is if their camp even cares at this point. After the fight, Peruzelli said he offered Slice a rematch but Slice basically said, "Thanks, but no thanks."

"I know he won't take a rematch," said Peruzelli. "That's not something they want for him. They want to give him someone that he can walk over so they can build him back up again."

He's probably right, only next time, no one will care.

Kimbo's career is not over, not even close. I've heard from members on Fannation saying that no one will tune into Kimbo's fight's now because of the loss. No one watched Kimbo because of perfect recorded coming into the fight, they watched him because the wanted to see a monster pummel someone's face into a bloody mess. Why wouldn't the same viewers from Saturdays fights watch Kimbo's next fight? They'll be intrigued with the story of Kimbo and will watch for the Kimbo's opportunity to redeem himself and possibly destroy his next opponent in anger. Wait and see, this is not the last time you will hear of Kimbo Slice.

I don't blame Kimbo either, he wants to be a good MMA fighter. He trains hard and is doing everything he can. The problem is you throw him into the main event against someone who has been training most of their life, he's going to have a problem because he hasn't been training for that long. Most fighters have been doing combat sports/martial arts since they were kids, the general public doesn't realize this I know, but it's true. Look at Brock Lesner. He is physically very gifted and an incredible athlete for his size. However, Lesner has been wrestling almost his entire life, if he hadn't, he wouldn't be in the UFC right now.

Kimbo's career isn't over, but he's a circus act just like the guys he's been beating (Tank, JT, and probably Shamrock if the fight ever happens). These guys are either fun to watch fight or had at some point been a legitimate fight. No one mistakes them for elite fighters, they're pretty much the Harlem Globetrotters or the AND 1 team of MMA.

Anyone else think this was rigged? I'm watching the fight over again and he seems to go down a little too easy:

Kimbo's career isn't over. He has to have the million dollar rematch first.

October 7, 2008  02:59 AM ET

Kimbo too light in the **** to fight heavier fighters he went up for the money only

October 7, 2008  03:09 AM ET

Let's see...
Overpromoted mismatches and suspicion of outright fixes.
Way too many belts given by way too many so-called organizations.
Propped up careers created and "managed" by shady unethical promoters who take all the money and use the athletes as disposable commodities.
Preposterous judging suspicious of outright fixes.
And supposedly this is the "alternative" to boxing? This IS boxing, with all the slime and sleaze and abuse and transparent cheating and lies. A little more blood, but this is nothing we haven't seen for a hundred years in boxing... and this is why I quit watching boxing years ago.
Now, after this fiasco, I've also forever quit watching MMA, which I thought WAS an alternative, an honest competition. Geez, I'm a fool. And after watching the other night, I keep feeling like I need a shower...

Slice fans cry so damn much. He's an old Mike Tyson and that's it. He's good for one round with someone who doesn't fight back. He has no wind to be "The Face of the MMA" let alone someone who will probably try and fight another washed up has been from UFC 1. He should have stayed on You Tube where he would have kept his legendary status as a brawler. I hope the payout for him was substantial because you'll never see him fight anyone decent ever again.

October 7, 2008  05:13 AM ET

"Yeah...it's all good. We still goin to the after party, you know what I'm sayin. Holla at your boys ya'll" poor Kimbo seemed really broken up about losing

October 7, 2008  05:17 AM ET

I've been following Kimbo's MMA career with great interest. Why? Because he is different from what's being pushed on us fan's by the UFC. Kimbo is humble and forthright. Unlike many of his "legit MMA" counterparts, you don't have to endure clip after clip of him telling us how this person or that is going to be destroyed in one way or another. Unlike the fauxhawk wearing, tribal tattoo sporting, smack talking mouthbreathers (on the Ultimate Fighter for instance) Kimbo is a breath of fresh air. I earnestly and honestly hope that he continues to pursue his career. He may never become a world beater...but he puts his money where his mouth is unlike so many of his detractors.

October 7, 2008  05:21 AM ET

Basic fact checking please. Kimbo's fight against James Thompson was stopped 38 seconds into the third round. If you are going to write about MMA...please learn about MMA.

Good point, Hank. I'll watch Kimbo simply because every punch he throws could very well be the one that knocks out his opponent. He got caught off-guard in this fight. He hadn't EVER had anyone come out swinging at him like that, not even in his street brawls.

October 7, 2008  06:20 AM ET

Yes he was overhyped, but you have to blame the executives and seedy individuals who were using him as a cash cow for that. The man was homeless, why shouldn't he have got all the paydays that he can?

I doubt his fighting days are over though. Here was a guy who is just learning the sport and from what I know, is training hard to become better at it. That's a tough situation for anyone.

Imagine that you're just learning a new career but everyone at your new job expects you to be perfect. First time you screw up your TPS report, someone ends up writing a blog about how much you suck. That's Kimbo. This may be best for everyone actually, hopefully he can train in peace now and hopefully we don't have to see that man every 6 minutes anymore.

October 7, 2008  06:44 AM ET

Kimbo is a joke. Put him in with any of the top Light Heavyweights or Heavyweights and he loses very quickly. Go back to fighting thugs for money....that is what Kimbo is great at.

October 7, 2008  06:57 AM ET

I don't blame Kimbo for much of this charade. He was getting paid to be something that he wasn't. It's like part of the infamous group Milli Vanilli.

Yeah, he's exposed, but he's gotten paid too. And from listening to his interviews with Dan Labatard on Miami AM radio, that's all he really ever cared about. He always said that he wanted to get paid to support his family.

So what did he try to do? Fight and win the money. So what if he's not an MMA fighter? No one really believed that he was in the first place. We all saw his backyard brawls and wanted to see him do that in the MMA.

Maybe he got caught up in the whirlwind that his promoters were feeding us. In the end, everyone was excited he fought and I guess getting wasted like he got was just as exciting as him beating someone up.

Will he go away? Only is he wants to. He reminds me of the later Tyson years...you watch because your hoping to see what made you watch him in the first place, carnage.

October 7, 2008  08:04 AM ET

One thing people are overlooking is the fact that Kimbo found out who he would be fighting only a couple of hours before. When you are dealing with trained fighters, preparation for a fight is HUGE. I'm not saying the outcome would have been any different, but Kimbo might have at least known that 8 of his Petruzelli's previous 9 wins came by way of knockout.

October 7, 2008  08:08 AM ET

Kimbo is a carnival act. He has done nothing in the cage to support all the hype surrounding him. I saw him in NJ in his Elite XC debut against James Thompson. The Colussus had him in trouble and it even looked like Kimbo started to tap out at one point. Clearly Elite XC had hoped he'd win, but he's been a bit of a bust. I'm sure they'll continue to market Kimbo, and be more selective on his opponents.

October 7, 2008  08:16 AM ET

your fact checking is horrible as stated before , did the fight with James Thompson just not happen in your mind

October 7, 2008  08:24 AM ET

Anyone with the slightest training can take this bum. He hits hard, but that's it! He can't move, he's too slow, and he has no knowledge of how to fight. He's lucky they wouldn't let Shamrock fight. Kimbo wouldn't have walked out of the cage.

I agree, but Kimbo should have never accepted this fight. Everything to lose nothing to gain.

thank you silver for the attention to detail kimbo was dominated in the second round of that fight.
