Steelers fans will rip their own team up any day of the weak. From saying Ben is not a quarterback, and Ben sucks, now this is the only guy that got them to a Superbowl win in what, 20 something years? Didn't some steeler fans dump some Pittsburgh quarterbacks trash cans in his front yard, was that true? I am from Youngstown Ohio, and let me tell you, just listen to 102.5 fm after a steeler loss, unbelievable man. Steeler fans are there when they are winning but as soon as they lose, look out, the crying towls start waving and they start **** their binkies, around the Pittsburgh area.

This isn't about which team has the most fans according to a survey. Football tickets and travel cost money. We Steelers fans show our loyalty week in and week out by spending our hard-earned money to follow our beloved Steelers wherever they go, and by buying tickets to see them whenever they come to where we happen to live. Many Steelers fans adopted the team in the 1970s, but let's face it, most young Steelers fans weren't even alive then. Further, anyone who remained loyal to the Steelers through the mid- to late-80s is a true fan.

And it's not about which team has the "smartest" fans. We all encounter fans who don't know much about football or their team, but they still show up and root for their team, and know when to yell and when to be quiet. Seek and ye shall find. Whatever.

The thing that's undeniable is that no matter where you go, the team with the best-traveling/attending and loudest fans in its opponents' stadiums is the Pittsburgh Steelers. Judged on that basis, the Steelers have the best fans anywhere, and yes, we are STEELERS NATION, and were such long before the term came into existence for the Red Sox.

HERE WE GO STEELERS, HERE WE GO!

I don't really know that well, so I'll give it to the Steelers as far as traveling, but it helps that they've had consistent success through the years. Behind them I'd have to say you would see fans like the Packers'; the Steelers' towels are not a) as original or b) as well known as the "cheeseheads", and having been to a decently cold night game at Arrowhead (where the Chiefs never play late enough in the year for it to get REALLY cold) I have the ultimate respect for their die hards who brave the snow and freezing temps for the seemingly never-ending NFL game length. I know it snows in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, at the New Jersey Giants' and Jets' stadium in East Rutherford, and in Buffalo and Foxboro too, but there's something distinctly manly and a touch insane about the way Green Bay's fans do it. I think the Chiefs have some pretty loyal fans too, considering a lot of them get sick to the point of wanting to throw up watching the way their team plays but they still go to every game. It's hard to keep a high level of support for a team mired in mediocrity like the Chiefs have been, so I think among the teams with the worst teams, KC has to have the best fans. It's not a badge of honor to wear proudly, but I'll take it.

What are you smokin'!?!

Thats what you get when you are a fan of one area, knowledge and myopic view of that one team.

Pittsburgh's "Terrible Towel" has been around a LOT longer than that Cheesehead hat "thingy". It been around over 40 years (mid 70's) and was the first "Fan towel" in the NFL (or any other major sport that I know) Most every other team has "towels" now . But they are all just a poor imitation of the orginal. Myron Cope's terrible Towel, which has become an Fan icon in Sports.

That Cheesehead thingy has only been around since 1987 AND it wasn't even originally a Packers thing ! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheesehead

ps. I do have a great deal of respect for Packers and their organization. I would say the same of the NY Giants also. These are the "old school" teams and Owners. So the most respected NFL teams AND organizations have to go to Steelers,Packers & Giants Year after year. But the Steelers seem to show up in numbers throughout the country better than any team . From NY to San Diego and from New England to Seattle, there always seems to be more Black and Gold than other opposing travelling teams

The terrible towel was the original "waving towel" in the NFL sports created by Myorn Cope back in the '70's.

It's impossible to judge. Certainly the franchise has had its share of success, and that brings in fans. From my experience with Steeler's fans here in the Washington DC area, they are very vocal, very annoying, but rarely very informed. If being a "great fan" means you can't name three players on the team, then yes they are "great fans."

I am originally from the Pittsburgh area and have watched Steeler football every Sunday from the day I was born. It's just what you did on Sunday after going to church. I now live in Ohio and still root for the "home team". My sisters live in South Carolina and they have Steeler bars down there. My brother lives in Harrisburg and has a Steeler bar he goes to. My son is in the Air Force, and he has a Steeler bar near his base and roots for the Steelers when he is overseas. It doesn't matter where you are, you carry the black and gold wherever you go. It doesn't matter if the Steelers are up or down, we still root for them. So, it was nice to read your story and just confirm what Steeler fans knew all along. We love our black and gold.

Who has the most rabid fan base in the NFL? Former player Ross Tucker says the debate not even close. In his column this morning for SI.com, Tucker comes out in support of Steeler Nation, which showed up in droves to Sunday's game in Jacksonville.

The Steelers have the most dominant fan base in the National Football League and their ability to consistently travel, en masse, and infest other team's stadiums gives the Steelers a competitive advantage that no other franchise can claim.

...

My thoughts on NFL fans were confirmed in a recent straw poll of a couple active players who said the Steelers fans far and away do the best job of taking away a home team's advantage. None of the players wanted to state their feelings publicly and disenchant their own fans, and for good reason, but the fact remains there is nothing quite as powerful in the NFL as Steeler Nation.

...

Secondly, I am well aware that the Packers, Raiders, Cowboys, and Redskins, just to name a few, have great fans that pop up in away stadiums every time their team is on the road. Trust me, it does not compare to Steelers fans. I have played for some of those teams and at home against the others and it is not even close. The Steelers have the best fans in the NFL.

Fans obviously have their own opinions on the matter but we think it's interesting to hear a player's point of view on the topic. Is Ross correct in his assessment?
